Description
In the land called Lortanis, the cyber revolution led to bots eventually overrunning and terminating the human race. The bots however were not self sustainable so in the end they ended up vanishing as well from the face of the planet. Eventually, all that was left were plants and in the space that the lack of civilization left behind, plants are becoming sentient.
Tales of Leaves is a 2D Metroidvania Platformer which tells the story of Leafy, one of the first sentient plants in its journey from Leaf to full-grown Tree and it’s fight for survival in desolate Lortanis.
This soundtrack was made as part of OST Composing Jam 9 meaning it was fully composed, recorded and edited within the span of a week. As an additional challenge to myself I've also made the entire soundtrack using a single synth, the Sonicware Liven Mega Synthesis. I've used no outside samples or effects so everything you hear is using the Mega Synthesis chip, with the exception of my own voice that can be heard during the intro track.

I didn't thought I'd find another story about sentient plants for this jam LMAO ! For a single synth submission it's diverse enough in the sounds, but it's not in the chords departement. You can make your synth shine by making more with your harmony and melo, it's a necessity in minimalist music such as yours.
You also need to chase "fulness" as much as possible, some parts sounds a little hollow : a good way to resolve this issue is appropriately to write counter melo and richer harmonies, so really if I had one advice, dig this part of music theory !
Anyway, GG, and sentient plants (with visuals !) for the win !
wow that's amazing advice. thank you very much for your feedback <3
I love the “Just Go Up” theme, it is so funny and makes for a really good mood to start the day! You do have a great set of emotional landscapes in your soundtrack. I think the use of chiptune is fortunate for the beginning of the game, when the bots were still in control, but maybe in the future you could find some more “organic” textures for the rising of plant sentience. Just a thought! Very well done ^^
wow I love that idea of going more organic to show the plant sentience, I haven't thought of it at all. Thanks for the great feedback !
It's really cool that you challenged yourself to write with only the Mega Synthesis chip (and your voice)! I am also a huge fan of 2D Metroidvania Platformers so it was really fun to imagine :) My favorite track is Just Go Up. I agree with KFComet that I would have loved to hear a little more variety in chords!
really cool submission, and the cover art is incredible!!! i love me some chiptune. the first track is my favorite! the composition is done well - i do recommend doing some research on chord progressions and building melodic lines that don't create too much dissonance. this wasn't really an issue too often though, as every track was super enjoyable!!! especially "Just Go Up" - that one was lots of fun and the mixing was achieved more thoughtfully. thanks for sharing, this was a fun listen!!!
thank you so much for the detailed review <3
