  • This was a very clever take on the theme and an interesting central mechanic. I enjoyed the iterative development of a strategy over multiple runs. Considering what single action to add each run really adds a satisfying level of complexity to the experience. I'm pretty certain I didn't encounter all the configurations of enemies during my limited playtime, but I did find myself completely ignoring the sword in favor of an endless string of shields and archers. I can see the potential benefit of being able to combine an attack and a move, but I didn't ever feel like it was necessary when I could just adjust my position a little and be fine. The game's audio is perfectly matched to the game. The initial start menu sets the idea of combat and the player "zooming in" to control the army. The following endless march is just perfect for the slow, steady advance of the frog army. Definitely gave off the idea that it was inevitable the frogs would win. Lot of fun, great job!

Summarize your game!
In Frog Army you are a frog who is joining the frog army in an attempt to dethrone the frog king. Before you join the fight, you must choose your weapon. Pick the sword, and you'll only do one damage per swing. Pick the shield, and you can only block one projectile. Pick the crossbow, and you'll only have one shot. After joining the fight, you'll find pretty quickly that you can't take the onslaught alone. Thankfully, there are more recruits in line! Each run adds on, such that the next soldier can help the first one. By the time the throne is taken, you will have amassed one Frog Army, and be crowned the one true King.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
The player must choose only one weapon, and the only projectile weapon, the crossbow, has only one bolt. The shield has only one hit of protection, and the sword does only one damage. In the end you will have one army, made of only one individual, and in any kingdom, there can only be one king.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
I'm very proud of the intro music! I hope you listen through it at least once. You may notice the ghosts don't swing the sword at the same moment you did each run. Through play testing I found that it was hard to match the timing of the ghosts perfectly with the player. I ultimately made the design decision to guarantees that if a ghost collides with an enemy they will swing and hit them. This made the game much more predictable and less frustrating in the late game.
