Design Statement
When we first heard the music provided as the jam prompt, its light, playful opening made us imagine a fairy tale. That led to Ring Back Yesterday, a point-and-click adventure about a child who stumbles into a fairy’s home. While looking for a way out, the child pieces together the fairy’s story through the rooms and the things left behind.
The distinct sections of the jam’s theme track gave us a model for the game’s pacing. Its light opening inspired a quiet stretch of exploration, while the livelier middle suggested a shift toward puzzles that ask players to connect clues across rooms. The track’s abrupt stop inspired a short, decisive ending as the exit opens. We built the puzzles around a magic bell that restores objects to earlier states, so uncovering the past is something players do as well as something they discover.
Game Instructions (launch steps, controls, and gameplay overview)
1. Launch the game. Extract the downloaded ZIP and double-click ThatGameJam.exe in the extracted folder.
2. Explore with the mouse. Move the cursor near an interactive object to reveal a small white dot. Left-click to inspect objects, pick up items, or advance dialogue. Click exit arrows to move between unlocked rooms.
3. Rewind objects. Once you’ve found the magic bell, click its icon to enter Bell Mode, then left-click a valid target to restore it to an earlier state. Right-click or press Esc to cancel Bell Mode.
4. Find a way out. Examine clues, use the items you collect, and solve puzzles to unlock the exit.
