I have been trying to fix this issue for an hour and a half, and have had no luck. Can anyone help?

Try to use the unachiver app to unpack the zip. On some Macs, the default way to unpack zips changes some file types to make them "fit" for mac, but the rpg maker game can't find them anymore as result.

I have been trying to do that. I first compress the game into game.zip that I try to open with the unachiver, but it doesn't work.

The nromal download of the game is already in a .zip. You don't have to compress it.
If you're using an app, try to manually download the game instead.
