Description
Over the Frame is fictional (obviously) narrative-based game in the genre of visual novel. The game's plot revolves around a girl whose mother died under mysterious circumstances after giving birth. The girl accidentally finds a key to the attic in her house. There, she discovers paintings that her mother created during her pregnancy. These paintings turn out to be portals to fantastical worlds, which the girl explores to learn about her mother and find out how she died.
The soundtrack combines two types of sound: the first is more electronic-industrial in nature, representing the atmosphere of the real world. This world is filled with the girl's worries, mysteries about her mother, and conflicts with her father, who refuses to talk about the mother's death, leading the girl to feel he is hiding something. The second type of sound captures the atmosphere of the fairy-tale world, expressed with more acoustic instruments. In these fantastical worlds, the girl meets her mother and tries to make up for the lost time they could have spent together.
The first composition (Attic of Memories) relates to the first act and combines the transition from the real to the fantastical world. Here, the player is introduced to one of the recurring motifs—the theme of the protagonist.
The second composition (Pictures of Life) corresponds to the second act, in which the girl undergoes a series of trials in her search for her mother. Musically, this is expressed through a dark reharmonization of the protagonist's motif into a harmonic minor. Additionally, the mother's motif appears here in a somewhat transformed form.
The third composition (Secrets and Tears) embodies the idea of "the darkest night before the dawn," as after the dark and uncertain first half of the track, a climax follows, where the motifs of the protagonist and her mother meet, woven into a symphonically-driven accompaniment that is both bright and melancholic. This is the moment when the girl heals from her emotional wounds and comes to terms with her mother's loss, returning to the real world filled with bright memories.
