This is a scene guide for Cruel Serenade: GutterTrash in (roughly) chronological order. Spoilers below this point, obviously.

Having been reviewed and edited, this is now an official guide, with Bitshift's blessing. This guide is intentionally restricted to scenes with art, or that may have art in the future. Various smaller nooks and crannies will be left to exploration.

Haven Back Alley Encounter:

After entering Haven for the second time (after your mission to the boar island), head down the road to the hotel. If you've used a DataCrystal.js file to transfer certain stats from the first game, you may encounter a scene here, depending on what those stats are:

  • Two losses to the boars in the previous game will trigger the scene, but allow you to fight your way out.
  • Three or more losses will trigger the scene and bypass the fight

The CG is the same for both versions.

The other stats aren't used, YET. You can view some of them in the new entry on the Status menu if you like however, and doing so is a good way to verify your DataCrystal file is working, as they'll change from zeros once you enter Haven the second time.

Afterwards, a stairway at the back of the alley will be unlocked. There are no further scenes here though...for now.

Meeting Mahir (First Time):

After meeting Mahir, you can either fight him or follow his orders to perform some "work" before you're released from the plaza.

  • Losing the fight results in a game over, followed by a full CG.
  • Winning the fight rewards you with the "Good Luck Charm", a toggle that lets you turn hypno off in fights entirely when equipped for convenience-sake or if you prefer to avoid that gameplay. Note that leaving it on will make fighting overly easy. Has an effect if equipped at least once before fighting Khazeem in the slut mode route.
  • Winning the fight also allows you to avoid doing Mahir's "job", as promised, and grants you the ability to leave the plaza.
  • If you leave without fighting, you'll be given one more chance to change your mind before you actually go to the "job."

Losing, and Mahir's "Jobs":

Every full defeat to a group of hyenas in the Entertainment District I will bring you back to the plaza, and a scene in front of the strip club. Afterwards, you'll chat with Mahir and be sent to work before you're allowed to leave the plaza again. Both the porn shop and strip club are available, but you can only do one job per playthrough. There are three “frozen” defeat scenes, and three “work” scenes at the “job” of your choice. The timing of the first work scene may vary depending on whether you fight Mahir on first meeting him, but dialog will indicate this and steer you in the right direction.

The Center Path:

After losing to the hyenas once in Entertainment District I, Mezz will be willing to put on the Street Clothes, allowing entrance to the center path. At the top of the center path there will be an NPC called Riviera, who will allow you passage for 1000 credits; talking with him starts the main mechanic/minigame of the area: earn credits by interacting with the “clients” (doberman) while avoiding the thugs.

While in the minigame, the hyenas(thugs) can grab you if you walk too close to them, which leads to a small mini-scene.

Being grabbed four times leads to another unique CG, and a “loss”, losing this way four times will grant you some alternative mini-scenes each time (including with the clients), and by the fourth loss you’ll get a unique game over.

Underground Passage Capture (No full unique CG, but smaller unique ones, and a number of scenes):

Inspecting the pipes in the underground passage leads a series of events with the hyenas, and eventually a game over.

Not available if in Slut Mode.

Host Club:

In order to go through the host club, you must reach it with either one or two defeats. Less than one, and Mezz will refuse. More than two, and you'll be carried directly to Khazeem's pad and bypass it. To progress through the host club, you'll have to complete a mini-game - you can lose this mini-game up to 3 times - with CG's for each loss and the third loss leading to a game-over.

Slut Mode:

Losing four fights to the mobs will put Mezz in "Slut mode." Among other things, this will change the gameplay of Entertainment District I to stealth. If caught three times, there will be a small, non-full-cg scene. If THIS happens four times, there will be a final small, non-full-cg scene and a game over.

Fighting Khazeem:

You may arrive at Khazeem's pad three ways: 1. By the front, 2. Through the host club or 3. By being dropped off there if in Slut Mode. The possible endings to the fight are as follows:

On Normal Route:

  • Win: Good End, epilogue
  • Lose: Bad End, with Khazeem

On Slut Mode Route (either path):

  • Win: Same as Normal Route
  • Lose: Second Bad End with Khazeem

If Mahir's Good Luck Charm was equipped at any point, and if Mezz arrived at Khazeem's headquarters via the Host Club, a final, secret scene will be shown after winning."

Battle Sex:

Battle sex only occurs after arrival in the Gutter; Fights are "ordinary" in the Barrens and losing just leads to a game over.

It's unlikely you will somehow miss or avoid battle sex and the in-fight hypno mechanics, but if you aren't seeing them and want to, be sure you don't have the "Good Luck Charm" equipped.

Extra Considerations:

There are also a variety of hidden things scattered throughout the game: handy unique items, little text-only scenes, and hints at all kinds of things. But those will be left up to the player to discover. The purpose of this guide is to ensure those who've bought the game can get to all the "meat" of it.

There's a flowchart companion to this guide here.

Definitions:

CG: Explicit illustration overlaid on the screen. "Full" CG is a full-screen, more detailed illustration. In contrast to limited CG or sprite CG, which is a smaller illustration.

where is  entertainment district III

Entertainment District III is the last district before the boss fight.

If you can't find this guard on the green bar - It's because you already dealt with him. If not it means you have not progressed up to this point - if so just keep playing the game and you'll inevitably find this room. If you want more specific advice I'll reply later with screenshots(not computer ATM)

I guess the staircase unlocked after the boar scene is gonna be used on the 3rd game? Since the door is locked and that we can loot a rusted key somewhere

Quite a bit! Most notably, the slut mode endings are in now, as is the host club.

how do i get the bunny suit

Mahir gives it to you after you talk to him. Mezz will refuse to wear it until you reach the host club and you've been knocked out in a fight at least once.

right so is there a way to open the basement door after you defeat or lose to the boars? I do wanna know

im asking cause a previous comment says that they think its for chapter 3 and i wanna ask just to make sure ^w^

thank yoooooou

I can't find the very last gallery scene. I've gotten all of them from beginning to to end besides the last one and I'm so confused on to where it is.

(+1)

I'm having trouble with the data crystal. When you say "Two losses to the boars" or "Three losses" what does that mean exactly? Does that mean getting the mob CG or does that mean losing to the boss?

(+1)

Mobs most likely the biss has his own defeat scenes

(1 edit)

Losing to normal enemies on the first game, the mob CGs.

Losing thrice in that game would put you on a "slut mode" as it does in GutterTrash too, that's why you can't "fight them off" anymore.

As for the DataCrystal, It's a file you get from playing the first game, that you bring over, if you need help importing it over to GutterTrash this here explains it: https://bitshiftgames.itch.io/cruelserenade/devlog/543594/cruel-serenade-033-is-...

If you aren't getting that scene it could be a poorly imported DataCrystal.

Hope that helps!

You see, I swear I've done all of that, but it hasn't worked... I'll try it again in a bit. In mean time, in your guide it sounded like there was a different scene for if you lose to Khazeem when in slut mode. I did this but got the same ending as the normal one.... Is there a different scene?

(1 edit)

There are different scenes, to not spoil much: One has Mezz be choked, and the other he is lifted and has an earing(Slut one), maybe this can help you figure out which you didn't get. Since maybe you got the slut scene twice but not the normal one? Lose thrice in the Entertainment District to get into slut mode. The game will go into a "stealth mode" playstyle and that's your cue that you're in it.  As for the not being able to get the boar scene, it is a little "complicated" you know? To break it down  what you must do:

Play the first game https://bitshiftgames.itch.io/cruelserenade and get slut mode/trained, same idea lose thrice to the boars in THAT game, then when you complete your run, bring a save file from that game, specifically the DataCrystal.js file to Gutter Trash, - that's a recap of everything you need to do.

The issue I have with that is does the slut ending count? It said that only endings where Mezz leaves the island count...

Nevermind, it worked this time! I swear I did that like two or three times before without it working... Thank you for your help!

Hi, I apologize but I am having a similar issue of not getting the scene you mentioned at the hotel. I completed the first game and did so fully in slut ending where Mezz kept the earrings ported over data crystal got the option to override the pervious stuff here are said stats MezzStatus = { NumberofBoarDefeats : '4', ChaptOneTrainedEnd : '1', ChaptOneDelta : '12', TimesFucked : '0', TimesOral : '91', TimesAnal : '45',}. And I have just left and gotten back from the boar island and after talking to scratch again to go steal the drive before leaving I have looked all around outside and inside the hotel but can't find the scene as before mentioned for the slut ending. Did I possibly transfer the data crystal wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

To clarify where it is, it is up this road, this is on the left of the hotel:

You should be able to go up there at any time, just when you do for the first time after returning the cutscene plays. Your file should be correct yeah! But you can try plugging a number on "TimesFucked",  maybe something like 20? Don't know why it's zeroed out and it might be that.

The path to the file is  \[Bitshift] Cruel Serenade - GutterTrash [v. 1.0.7]\CS - Gutter Trash\www\DataCrystal.js

If that's where you dropped yours then it's correct, go up the alley and tell me what you see, if the cutscene doesn't start I'll be here to help you again.

Thanks for the help was able to get it to work! I am sorry if I was not understanding the insturctions clearly, but I was putting the DataCrytsal into the first one I see when I open www. What got it to finally work for me though was ignoring that one then opening js, then plugins then putting it into the DataCrystal in there! Either way thank you for the helps and can finally get to gaming hehe :3

(+1)

I'm unsure of how to do this as well. I've tried moving my Data Crystal file from the first game to the second, but it still doesn't seem to work for some reason. D=

Developer

Looks like this post got caught in the automod Cobalt. Been a looong time, but let me know if you still need help.

(+1)

That would be great, thanks! I still haven't figured it out yet.

Developer

Alright, let's do this as simply as possible. In your GT game folder, www\js\plugins, there is a Datacrystal.js file. Open it in notepad. In it you will find an entry that says "NumberofBoarDefeats : '0'" (0 may be some other number). Change the number to 3. Save the file. Close and reopen the file to make sure it was saved correctly. Close it.
Start a new game in GT. Passing by the alley the FIRST time will do nothing. This is expected. Progress until Mezz is ready to leave on the right side of the Haven map to fight the boars. Leave. When you return, walk past the alley, left to right . A short scene should trigger. Investigate by walking further up the alley. The rest of the scene will trigger.

Sorry for the late reply. For some reason I can't open the data crystal file and it shows up as a Javascript compilation error. Any fixes you can think of?

Windows (which I assume you're using as this is a Windows-only game) is able to open a given file for you when you double-click on it because it inspects the file TYPE, as indicated by the extension, and has a stored list of default programs to use to open each type. It tosses the file to that program, and you're on your way. This is a great system in general, but it has one shortcoming: what if there were files you might want to open in more than one way?

The datacrystal file is a .js file, meaning javascript. This is because RPGMaker MV is built out of Javascript: the .exe you run just loads a bunch of javascript. This allows it to be easily customized with plugins ALSO written in Javascript. These plugins are loaded when the game loads and immediately integrated into the rest of the code. Thus, if you want to get additional data INTO an MV game, the easiest way is to just create a dummy "plugin" with no code, only data, which then becomes immediately available to the running program. This is what the datacrystal file is, and how it works.

.js files are generally code, so Windows assumes you want to RUN them when you double-click on them. This is a reasonable assumption, but useless with the .js files associated with MV, as 1. They're all designed to run only in the context of the MV framing executable 2. They're all fragments, not complete programs 3. The datacrystal file doesn't even have any code to run, just data and most importantly 3. In THIS case, you don't want to run it anyway, just edit it.

But Windows doesn't know this.

You need to TELL it this. You can do this in any of 3 ways:
1. By RIGHT clicking the file, choosing "Open WITH" instead of Open, and choosing Notepad. If Notepad isn't an option, you will have to select "choose another app" and direct Windows to Notepad in the resulting dialog.

2. Because Windows realizes .js files are also just text files, you should be able to also just select "edit", which should also open it in Notepad.

3. By simply opening Notepad on its own (Start Menu, type "Notepad", click), and drag-and-dropping the datacrystal file into the program.

All of this is why I specified "Open with Notepad" in my initial post.

Once open, you can edit and save the file. HOWEVER, be careful. Notepad likes to default to saving things as .txt files. Be sure you're saving it as .js, overwriting the original. To be sure, re-open the file after you THINK you've saved it, and verify the changes are there.

I've also been struggling to get this cutscene to trigger. I reinstalled a fresh save, and changed the datacrystal file before first launching the game, it now looks like this -

MezzStatus = { NumberofBoarDefeats : '3', ChaptOneTrainedEnd : '1', ChaptOneDelta : '12', TimesFucked : '1', TimesOral : '9', TimesAnal : '0',}

visited the island and returned to haven, walked past the alleyway, cutscene did not trigger.

Developer

1. Verify that the changes were saved correctly.
2. Where is the changed file located? Is it in www\js\plugins, as the instructions said? Changing the datacrystal.js file in the main directory of the game and failing to move it will not do anything.
I tested the most recent release by directly modifying the file to exactly the contents you listed below, and it correctly triggered the start of the scene ("!" icon and crash sound, which you then have to investigate further.)

Hey whats scene 4 bc I dont have it

Developer

I am VERY late replying to this, but since I'm here, and for future reference: Scene 4 (if Scene 1 is the very first scene shown, before you use the remote) is the porno Mezz films. This is one of the "jobs" he "works" for Mahir, and is located at the porn shop to the south of the main plaza. First time is triggered by backing out of fight with Mahir, or losing the first time to the mobs, then going to the shop. The scene is progressed by repeatedly losing to the mobs and returning to the shop.

I found it lol already long ago. anyway after like 25hrs i 100% both games and probs played them 3 times over now

Developer

Ha, good to hear!

where is mahir?

(+1)

In the "Gutter Plaza" before continuing on into the entertaiment districts. Right side of the map, alleyway. If you reached this place you have already met him, and have come out of his office when starting this area. If you're confused about a scene, you can only fight Mahir the first time you meet him,  so you might be locked out of it and need to load a save.

Thank you
