The sheer speed with which things came on screen and reached you when moving at full speed seemed reminiscent of the old DOS platformer Jazz Jackrabbit.
Maybe it's just that my reaction time absolutely sucks, but I felt like I had to remember where enemies were rather than react to them arriving on screen.
