  • Nice entry! I really enjoyed the aesthetics of the game! The color scheme was original and really was able to create a nice atmosphere with very few colors and reusing assets which is really efficient! The movement felt quite clean, I am almost a bit skeptical of movement in isometric views but I thought you pulled it off quite well! Unfortunately I found the combat to be rather glitchy/unpredictable, it felt like it wasn't taking all of my inputs and sometimes only played part of my animation. I think that you should focus on making the combat feel really nice and satisfying to use, so that its fun to beat up basic slimes. This is a really strong base and definitely has potential! Nice work!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
yes

Summarise your game!
Disdain is an isometric roguelike, where you, a sentient weapon by the name of Narith must journey through a perilous world, taking on waves of enemies to save your companion, young Illissa. This world has become devoid of color and light due to the increasingly dangerous enemies of DisdAIn.

A play on the artist’s fight against AI. Brought on by seeing the rule of no AI generated content allowed. I have a great disdain for AI thieves.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
love what you do! had fun creating this, happy to be back to making games and this is what made that happen so thank you!

Presentation:
+Very fitting music.
+Lovely art and animation.
*I can see some animations missing, but animations that are present look well done and clearly communicate the action.

Gameplay:
+The game itself ran well.
+Controls are easy to understand. Didn't need much of a tutorial.
+Healthbar UI came in handy, tho it would've been nice to see my dodge cooldown.
+I could tell when i was being damaged, or if i was dealing any damage.
+Game is beatable. (i think. i reached a "thank you" screen iirc.)
+Arena is small enough so i didn't get lost on where to go, but big enough to fight in.
*Attacking feels a bit clunky, but i found an exploit where i could just hold down the attack button and grind enemies. I enjoyed using it. Potential new feature?

Potential improvements?:
*Additional bar to see my dodge cooldown.
*While the animations look nice, I think u could've gotten away with having less frames to make more room for the others. The missing animations made it a bit difficult to understand what my character was actually doing. Perhaps with limited time to animate, you can just do key poses that shake, squash, and stretch! That way it looks snazzy, and i can tell what im doing.

Really appreciate the thorough review Nash!!

So glad you liked the visuals! I'm an artist first, dev second so art tends to take priority in my projects, I'm so glad you liked it all! I did run outta time sadly, tho I plan to implement the missing and more clean/polished animations in the future!

Dodge cooldown being visual is a great idea, I'll take note of that and add it in when I get back to this project!

I could have definitely toned down the animations to get them all in,  I just am very new to all this and managing projects like this so I've gotta learn to think about the bigger picture and build up to a playable version/prototype efficiently. Something I still struggle with quite a bit so thank you for the constructive criticism there ^^

Thanks again for the feedback and for playing my game in the first place!!

Lovely and fun title, with a lot of charm and a cool idea. I especially like the lighting cast by the glow tiles and the satisfying dash attack.

When the middle said "NEXT LEVEL", I did not realize I needed to go to the green area to warp, I kept standing in the middle. Also, when attacking rapidly, sometimes the attack animation does not play, but the attack works anyways. It took me a little bit to realize that a good strategy was to rush in with dash attack and then hide away and recharge health before diving in again.

A good title that could bloom into something even more special with time.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the game Anubis, thanks so much for giving it a go!

The lighting was such a last minute decision that I'm soooo glad I did! The progression definitely needs work, thanks for the feedback there, I'll try to implement changes in the future!

Awe thank you anubis ^^ I hope to expand on it more soon!

Want to start by saying the art is amazing, I can clearly see the vision you're going for, a little feedback would be to increase the attack range by a little (when attacking from the right) or make enemies get knock backed away from the player when hit, this is especially noticeable when enemies are coming from above as they can collide with the player before being hit themselves. I did get the feel for kiting the enemies, but it can be a bit frustrating for more casual players. The attack animation when attacking from the left side bugged out for me therefore I tried to position myself so they either come from right or below me. Also I was a bit unsure what exactly made me progress to the next level, by killing enough enemies or by surviving for a period of time, I would've liked a visual representation of that on the UI.

Either way very awesome job on the visuals, the game does have an artistic hook and the setting for the story is also there, would really enjoy to just play more of this game as it was fairly short :p

Thank you so much Minenik! I really appreciate the thorough review, I’m pretty new to game dev still haha this is my second game so thank you for the constructive criticism! The attack felt clunky to me as well but I just couldn’t figure out what I could do to fix it in time, I will for sure take your ideas into consideration in the future/if I continue this game! I’m an artist first, so I’m so glad you liked the visuals! The lighting was a last minute decision so I’m glad it holds up! As for the left animation…. It just didn’t exist, I didn’t take into account just how many frames I’d have to animate by hand to do 8 directional isometric movement 🥲 that is an update I will be fixing as soon as jam judging is done! Tho I don’t see myself winning haha but I don’t wanna get disqualified either 🤣

The progression bugged out very last minute and I had to just leave it as is, it’s supposed to progress after you finish the last wave but something messed up that I’ll be looking into after jam!

Thank you again! Your review and you playing the game in the first place makes the whole jam worth it in my eyes 💛 I’ll be sure to check out your game once I’m home from work today!
