  • Failed Experiment XXV was a fun little battler with a very clever HP degen/regen mechanic where damage and time takes damage but moving between enemies allows you to regen back to full to continue the game. Playability was very smooth with the dash and attack animations feeling great. I did run into a problem where I was either animation locked or there was a queued melee attack that needed to be cleared before a ranged attack could be used. Artisticly the game was very well done. Animations, art style, and sound design were incredibly polished. Great job! Mechanically, I would have liked to see some different abilities beyond just a speed boost when taking over different types of enemies, it looks like that might have been planned based on the GDD, but it would have added an element to the game that felt missing. GDD was extremely well designed with all elements discussed in the GDD either in the game or planned. It felt like a living document as opposed to just a list as it should be and was very detailed. Overall, the art sound and gameplay were great, but mechanically it was a little thin. Great game none the less.

Summarise your game!
Jump from host to host, stealing abilities as you fight to survive against hordes of enemies.

Action Combat
Level Up
Acquire new and unique genetic traits

You are Failed Experiment XXV, deemed unworthy and cast down by your scientist masters. But their hubris will be their folly, as you will claw your way out of the muck. Destroy all the other failed experiments and escape the forsaken and derelict underbelly of this machine world.

Evolve into the ultimate weapon.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are a symbiote, jumping from host to host. You are a bioweapon experiment that failed, relying on your hosts for your power, but ultimately you are the weapon.

I like the graphics and music, but to me the sfx didn't really fit. I was expecting more mechanical or squishy considering the atmosphere. The direction of attack was a good addition. I didn't really see the point of taking other hosts unless you needed more health, but I could be missing something. This is a solid game that just needs some extra polishing, which I know is basically impossible in a game jam lol. Good work!

A superb, stylish entry! The art and narrative hook is amazing, and the controls being drawn onto the environment was great for just jumping straight in. Gameplay felt smooth, directional indicator was great for helping for consistency, and I can see from the comments on the game page you had some great ideas for further development/power-ups, which I can definitely see how you might have implemented (getting everything in in a jam is impooossible, my team had a good amount of ideas left on the cutting room floor too, and a bunch of balancing we had planned out but just not the time!).
The foundation feels super solid, great work to the whole team!

I survived around 2mins, nice game. I think you could consider having the attack being automatic, as players will keep it pressed at all time anyway

Ah man, we started off with the concept of swapping hosts too on our game, and pivoted away because it just hindered the whole "build up your deck" concept.  I like how it plays in your game, well done!  Having hosts with better and better abilities (or multiple abilities) that you can use when you swap would be a good addition if you keep building this.

thanks ^^ we planned to have diffrent abilitys when you jump to a new host but we ran out of time unfortunately. But we plan on adding more unique abilitys. When we work on this project

Thanks! We're really excited to keep going and finish out the combat and progress, like the swapping hosts and having different abilities, and see where this project goes!

Really cool art and character design. Sadly i didn't understand how to use the  host skills but the concept is cool and promising. Will probably keep an eye if you decide to continue and polish it :)

Nice work! I think the combat could have some more juice. knockback, screenshake, combos. But this is a really nice foundation to build on! Good job! Keep making games!

Developer

Thanks for trying out the game! Appreciate the feedback. We had such a big vision for the game, but couldn't finish so many combat mechanics we wanted to implement. We'll probably keep building and working on the game in the future.

Thanks! I see we both went for a very similar concept lol we both went down this host jumping, gooey symbiote route. Your game was fantastic as well. Really, really cool
