  • I really enjoyed playing this! I love the unique puzzle solving and the upgrade system. It felt fairly polished in most aspects and the music and art are pleasant. The game's opening is a very nice touch. The game just about fits the theme. Minor issues: - Some z-layering issues when pieces move. - Moving the camera around with the mouse was interesting but it made selecting things a bit difficult sometimes. I think I personally would have preferred the effect to only happen near the edge of the window and to have some form of minimap to be able to see what's not immediately around you. - While hovering the active effects seemed to highlight them, it did not show the tooltip for what they do again - maybe a bug? - I'd rather not have the tooltips for pieces I'm selecting to attack pop up every single time I go to select them. Maybe move to a modifier key? - It'd be nice to have an option to have an easier to read font ...*reads last bits before submitting review*... THIS WAS MADE IN SCRATCH?? I'm very impressed!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Play as the last Black Rook in the world defending the ruins from white pieces in this strategic chess-based roguelike.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
In chess, you take/defeat other pieces by simply occupying their tiles. “You are the Weapon” describes how your rook character can take other pieces by simply moving into them without using any other items.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The engine used to program Rook's Last Stand was the popular kid's coding website Scratch, and it matches the quality of other jam games using simplistic block code behind the scenes. This was done as a proof of concept, and for fun :)

This is a really cool spin on chess! I loved getting the power ups between waves, it was fun becoming an overpowered rook. The difficulty ramps up really quick I never made it past wave 3 because I'm very bad at planning where everything will move lol. Great work!!

Developer

Thank you so much :D Wave 5 isn't too hard to get to if you look carefully, I know you can do it ;)

That was great! High level of polish and very challenging gameplay. I enjoyed the aesthetic though I wish the font was more legible.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! :> Is there any letters that could be improved without increasing resolution?

What an amazing concept, so simple, so easy to immediately pick it up and keep playing for awhile. I like the upgrade system to make it like a survivors style. I'd def say I wish I could better visualize enemy movement, the little image that shows when you hover is good, but it can sometimes be hard to tell just how many squares they can move, perhaps highlighting the actual ground of danger squares when you hover the enemy would be a good QOL change? Overall this was an awesome submission!

I thought about this as a feature or even a card, but in the end we decided it makes the game too trivial. Thanks for the feedback :]

Very cool game! Well designed and polished with a lot of mechanical depth and build creativity. Really felt like I could build my unit to the way that I wanted to play. My only fault is that the UI for the spaces you could move to could feel a little unclear when the board was full and you had weirder rules for movement. Definitely had occassions where I thought I had clicked on one space and my piece would move to a different one. All in all very good game with an interesting and well executed concept

Thank you for the feedback! I was trying to make pieces highlight along with tiles when you hovered, but I ran out of time and needed to submit.

Fun and polished!

We learned today I'm really bad at chess. Fantastic game!!

Very interesting and funny game, the second move after getting one kill is OP. I wonder how stockfish would play if it could move the opposite pieces x)

Developer

It would be a lot harder for sure, maybe impossible. They don't really prioritize self preservation right now lol

Really nicely made game! Simple to learn but not simple to play! (Like most great puzzle games!)

Thank you! :))

A great roguelike in similar style to shotgun king. The buffs you can get are all great and have their own place. The difficulty is what is to be expected to the game and is decently hard. The visuals and sound are also fantastic.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! It's actually set in the same universe as shotgun king but hundreds of years later, don't tell Puncake hehe

The concept behind this game is very cool, a neat spin on chess. The gameplay's fun and the style is great, well done!

Submitted(+1)

Im not great at playing chess, but I managed to get to the final round! The rook alone makes for a great game!  Smartly designed!

Submitted(+1)

Love this game! Its simple but genius :3 Very addictive as well! It has great art, music and it's basically one mechanic polished until it shines :) Fantastic!
