- I really enjoyed playing this! I love the unique puzzle solving and the upgrade system. It felt fairly polished in most aspects and the music and art are pleasant. The game's opening is a very nice touch. The game just about fits the theme. Minor issues: - Some z-layering issues when pieces move. - Moving the camera around with the mouse was interesting but it made selecting things a bit difficult sometimes. I think I personally would have preferred the effect to only happen near the edge of the window and to have some form of minimap to be able to see what's not immediately around you. - While hovering the active effects seemed to highlight them, it did not show the tooltip for what they do again - maybe a bug? - I'd rather not have the tooltips for pieces I'm selecting to attack pop up every single time I go to select them. Maybe move to a modifier key? - It'd be nice to have an option to have an easier to read font ...*reads last bits before submitting review*... THIS WAS MADE IN SCRATCH?? I'm very impressed!

Yes
Summarise your game!
Play as the last Black Rook in the world defending the ruins from white pieces in this strategic chess-based roguelike.
Please explain how your game fits the theme:
In chess, you take/defeat other pieces by simply occupying their tiles. “You are the Weapon” describes how your rook character can take other pieces by simply moving into them without using any other items.
Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The engine used to program Rook's Last Stand was the popular kid's coding website Scratch, and it matches the quality of other jam games using simplistic block code behind the scenes. This was done as a proof of concept, and for fun :)

Super interesting mechanic of building on the different chess moves. Maybe substituting a move for an attack at the square you would move to would be good? A lot to build on here, good stuff.
We actually considered a card that lets you attack without moving, but it would have been complicated to pick whether you wanted to move or not. Thank you :)
This is a pretty clever chesslike, I love the upgrades
Really fun, simple premise but well executed, art is clean and i love roguelikes so, nothing to critic. Congrats on making such a good game
I love the idea of a chess-based wave survival game, it works super well. The upgrades being additional rules is also a nice twist. Queens are definitely super strong in this though, if three popped up at once I had no chance. Perhaps they were spawn super infrequently until you've got a few upgrades?
The trick for the queens is that they're dumb. They just try to get as close as possible to you even if you can take them easily. If there's multiple, use obstacles to split them up enough to take them all out. Thanks for playing! :>
Very fun. Great music loop too. I could totally see this as a full game where you evolve to have tons of different movement options and enemies start to gain abilities as well.
Fun game! You could definitely expand this post-jam with more upgrades and I bet people would buy it
Super cool concept and game. UI is smooth, art looks good, music is nice, and the roguelike progression is cool!
I'd love to see this expanded with a variety of maps and perhaps some original pieces - the ones currently in the game can only do so much and it can get repetitive.
But overall, this is an awesome submission brimming with potential!
Thank you so much! Adding more enemies would be nice, and there are some canonical expanded pieces on variants in chess.com, like the Long Knight (moving 3, then 1 squares in an L) 🤔
Pretty easy to see why this is the most popular game so far, it's so fun! The extra jump buff is pretty busted, but still doesn't guarantee making it beyond the final wave... Really phenomenal execution, thanks for submitting!
Yeah Bloodlust is secretly always offered to you before wave 3 because it's so necessary. Thanks for playing :D
I love this! fun chess puzzle with a twist! really fun! Really get the brain going!
Super clever concept! Nice job
Overall great and unique idea. I have some doubts calling a chess piece a weapon, but who cares. For me highest value lays in gameplay and fun, fitting theme is always secondary matter.
It was one of my first ideas lol just because you take other pieces by moving into them directly
Saw the game on Discord and was curious of the final result. Amazing! Crazy that this is built in Scratch and even cooler that you provide the project file (interesting choice having one mega sprite). Great job!
Having one sprite handle everything is key for big projects, since you can have a core loop that while not working at a steady framerate still keeps functions from "running on top of each other". It's basically PICO-8's _init _update and _draw functions, and since I'm erasing and drawing the graphics with Pen every frame, nothing from another sprite would be able to "cooperate". There is one other sprite that is stuck to the middle and full of a screen-shaped window of 0x00000001 glass. This is "shown" but you never see it and was a simple way to not draw items if they don't touch the pane.
Great concept and visual/audio design!
Thank you so much :>
I just read that it's done in Scratch, now I'm even more amazed
Thank you! :D
This is just very fun! A nice art style, nice music, nice backstory, and the mechanics are very quick to learn but harder to implement effectively.
Very simple game with an intuitive mechanic! The fact that it was done using Scratch allows the programming part to be sped up a lot due to code blocks, so the extra time taken to polish the game and the art is great!
Nice one! Once more time I'm convinced that even simplest story can add a lot to engagement. Very cool!
Very cool art style. The theme was on point I felt like the weapon!
this is so much fun! i really enjoy the concept~ great job :3
Thank you :3
I love chess! This was super fun to test my mushy smooth brain, and it was pretty hard to stop playing.
This game is a blast. I love the rogue-like vampire survive-style gameplay; the art is awesome, and the loop is addicting.
Thank you so much :]
