Very cute!!! Every time I cook a kobold I'm just
This game is really cute with buncha cute dialogue and lil bits of personality between each of the customers. Especially love the tongue and cheek humor of it all, while also toying with the vore-y idea of the lil guys being eaten. Felt engaging and fun to play, esp as someone who likes cooking games alot!!
I know i said in Discord that i was struggling, but once i got things figured out i was getting pretty good ratings pretty consistently! Which is the beauty of a game like this and something i wanna explore myself. Just getting a whole system down so you can do things automatically, and this being what is expected of you. Once i realized that you can load the wrap up with toppings while your kobold is cooking instead of waiting to put them on top... oh baby. (Most people probably realized this right away but i may or may not have been slightly intoxicated on the job on my first run). However, maybe this comes down to a skill issue on my part but when there's any concurrency involved at all, my service scores tend to go right in the tank even if i feel like i'm doing a good job keeping up and doing things efficiently. And of course you already know about the folding score being more strict than most people expected but once i knew that that was something i just had to focus in and actually do properly, that ceased to be too much of a problem for me really.
The only actual concrete issues that i noticed are the following:
Somewhat less concrete things:
The whole bit of these cute little lizards staring up at you with them big ol eyes and giving a little squeak when you pick them up and just chuck them on the spit and serve them up with accoutrements is so funny. Vore is a wellspring for humor and a good amount of vore people have definitely figured that out by now but i haven't really ever seen it for hard vore like this. Maybe some gags in normal people media that didn't know that vore was a thing. I really like the sound design of the background noise, if i'm right the little snippets of music are a good subconscious indicator of where in the day you are. Gabby coming back the second day on my first run talking all about how great it is even though i completely fucked up her order and took forever to serve her was a bit dissonant but maybe kobold wraps are just that good. And when the first diner comes in and asks for a completely charred one, realizing that what color kobold you fire doesn't matter at all originally is a great moment. (Not that it's a hard realization. Just that it's a funny one) The customer is always right! In matters of taste.
Oh wow, thank you for all the feedback!!
To address some points, The timer icons are actually implemented as two collision shapes on an area, so those should be easier to fill to include the gap. Initially it only covered the alarm but I added covering the clock at the last minute too.
Thank you for the pointer about text wrapping, I had no idea that the fix was that simple, I’ll get that in as soon as judging is over.
A lot of UI was implemented last minute and didn’t get much testing, so thank you for letting us know there to look.
You actually can discard tortillas by slapping another one on top instead. We should probably add that tidbit to the memo page in the handbook.
Thank you so much for playing our game<3 I’m glad we were able to capture the silliness we were aiming for.
Raw blue kobold with cheese
I didn't even consider 2D nodes, i'm too Control-brained from working so hard on my entry, i guess. Plus my other major Godot project is a UI project too. But it certainly isn't unheard of to do it that way so i should've considered it and yeah, way simpler to fix. (BTW, regarding the camera, the mouse and keyboard inputs add together -- probably not intentional, but i did abuse the heck out of it.)
And i definitely should've tried just putting a tortilla on top, but it's hard to think of everything when you're slammed lmaoo
Influencer tastes are crazy
While part of me screams "nooo the poor 'bolds", the people must be fed. Well executed food service game, even if the folding rating had me fighting the urge to shout at my monitor at times. I liked the dialogue too. My first day was absolutely abysmal but I kept getting reasonably good ratings after that, save for a couple of orders I realised I completely bombed at. I had fun here! Art is cute. Perhaps too cute. ...the poor 'bolds...
Oh well, I'm sure they knew exactly what they signed up for.
The little details really pull this together. The custom loading screen, the "start" button being called "apply," and the cute scribbled tutorial/orders turn the experience from "fun little cooking game" to "genuinely delightful experience." And the gameplay is delightful indeed! Simple but demanding, with enough variance in the orders to keep things interesting. Good aesthetic, solid core gameplay loop... it's everything a game jam game should be.
And I barely even felt bad for the kobolds!
The controls felt good to me, I like that the game doesn't hold the player's hand and just allows things to be figured out. There's also a good work area layout and contextual awareness of what the player's trying to do to help with that. The art is cute and there are lovely interactive animations for most of the things you do! The sound effects are fitting and I like the kobold squeaks. The ambient mall noises in the background are soothing, but maybe a radio in the corner for the player to turn on could be a good alternative.
The dialogue, orders, and reviews felt slow to me, I think there should be an option to speed them up or click through them. I only played for a couple of days, I'm guessing that there will continue to be unique encounters as players move further into the game. I feel like it needs some additional reward to maintain engagement for the pace that the game sets, but it was quite fun to complete my first few orders!
Definitely something that needs tuning yeah. Initially the plan was that taking orders would also be a strategic/timing element for multitasking, but for various technical reasons, I had to lock the camera in most of those moments anyway, and when the camera is locked, all the timers stop simply out of fairness.
I think if I was to try this again, (or publish a 0.2 ver after the jam) I’d speed up text or make it skippable since there is no point in it being slow if it’s going to freeze timers anyway.
Im glad that the art and ambience landed though! Lilla did a lot to try and get that part right :>
I have never in my life rolled a wrap that didn't immediately disintegrate. So, this was a real challenge for me.
Fun, though! I've played a few games like this before and this is a good implementation of the concept. It took me a few tries to find the "click zones" so to speak, but once I did, I was multitasking tons. I felt a little bad for the kobolds, but the cute artstyle helps a lot.
My only major complaint is that the clicking and dragging felt a little janky, and instructions took me a few readings to figure out exactly what drawing symbol matched to what seasoning and the like.
This is a odd suprise, but a fun one. preparing the food feels nice and the squeaky kobolds give the cooking just the right amount of silliness. Good work :)
Did not expect a cooking game outta this jam, but certainly a welcome surprise, very gud game, love meh some burnt kobold.
mmm yummy carcinogens 😋
Truly nothing captures the foodservice experience like being being the only guy working and getting blamed for poor service.
10/10 this is a top 5 game this year
