I've played non-jam rhythm games much worse than this, and they didn't even have a kissable ratboy in them!
Very fun, I almost wish there was more to explore. It feels like it's almost a complete package already. The presentation of a rhythm game worked really well to tie-in the hypno theme too, the note track swinging and rotating instead of progressing linearly like most rhythm games do really helped send the idea home.
Amazing presentation! The visuals are excellent with all sorts of cool effects and great animations. The music and sounds match the visual cues and atmosphere very nicely, I love how well the voice acting fits! The rhythm gameplay feels new and fun, and it's got enough variety to stay interesting the whole way through, I can't offer any suggestions for making it much better.
The levels of care and polish are incredibly high. Very well done!
ADORABLE. I love this rat and I only wish I could see more of him. @w@ Rhythm games and hypno really do seem to go together purrfectly... love the concept, and the art's just precious!~
Wow the protag is super duper cute. Shocking he can't find anyone to bang him. Love the little main menu animation and the swaying coin for the O—not sure the N's read as N's to me though.
All the animations and art are great actually. Big fan. Love the inclusion of all the concept art too.
IMO, hitsounds in a rhythm game that has them should be on a separate slider to things like menu SFX, but frankly the fact there's a slider for them at all and configurable latency puts this well above a lot of games that WEREN'T on a jam deadline. Much appreciated. Just wish there were some indication of early or late so i could tune it a bit better. I see you were planning on a calibration sequence so if you do spend some more tiem on this then that'll be a great addition.
Aside, i did find a very easy way to see the fail screen—just hold down a key. Godot will get you with those key autorepeat events every time.
Oh wow - I love how this game pulls on so many tropes of hypnokink and pulls it into one tight package. The voice acting ties together wonderfully with the music, which had enough variety to stay interesting - and oh my god, the MC? So cute - seeing a new clone get added to the couch with each additional level win is so charming and cute. Not to mention all the animations were a feast for the eyes.
Weirdly I'm also running into the lag in the main menu like has been mentioned before - when playing through the game on hard some of the rings weren't rendering either, which lead to some unfair game overs. It also would of been nice to have some way to test the game latency in game before committing to a level.
All in all - hell yeah, love this lil' ratty boy.
Thanks for the feedback, Jigs! I've fixed the main menu issue now and I've added a hotfix failsafe for when rings aren't rendering. It's mainly a browser issue but hopefully this should protect your score!
A game latency wizard was on the list but I didn't have the time, unfortunately.
Wow! This is super polished. The gameplay is fantastic and flows great, and the animations are very well-done. Love the design of the MC!
Yesss another rhythm game! Really nicely done, super satisfying even with one button input, and I'm really impressed it was playable for me in browser without even adjusting for lag, AND I was mostly hitting greats and perfects. Excellent theme integration without feeling gimmicky, too. I loved stacking up those clones on the couch to build anticipation and the art and vibes were super fun and charming. Loved it!
Very fun! The animations and character were very cute and the songs were satisfying to play to.
Super happy to see so many games with rats on them for the jam :3
Also, the music and gameplay are so gooooood <3
couldn't play it until you updated but after finishing it i think it's stylish and fun. love the hypno rat! and the hypno rat. also a big fan of the hypno rat. not sure i cared for the hypno rat, but that critique pales compared to my favorite, the hypno rat.
The rendering here is extremely unoptimized. On a GTX 1060, frame times are consistently well over 50ms, which makes the game unplayable. Performance is better on an RTX 2080, getting around 18ms gpu frame times on average when running native (far more playable!), but GPU usage is still pegged at a constant 100%. Both GPUs were rendering to 1080p displays. We had to bust out Renderdoc to double-check that the game isn't a crypto miner, as the performance issues were pretty alarming.
The performance issues seem to stem from the sheer amount of full-screen gaussian blur (this is a fairly expensive operation!) being done every frame. Quite a few render passes seem to have their results go completely unused within the final presented frame.
Optimization issues aside, this is a pretty solid rhythm game! The vocals and backgrounds are fairly repetitive, but the underlying songs have decent variety. The presentation makes sightreading fairly intuitive, though the hard charts aren't particularly challenging.
Thanks for the feedback, Bhijn! Optimization is definitely something I have more to learn about. I went ahead and updated the game to remove the gaussian blur effect to help this game run on more computers.
the gameplay seems to run fine on my RTX 3090 (through Windows Sandbox) now! The title screen and related (intro screen) maxes out the GPU for some reason. missing a vsync or something?
Great work, loved the artwork and music!
