I usually do not care for text-heavy games, especially jam games, because I always feel like I’m being confronted with a big wall o’ text where so much of it is just there to inflate a wordcount. So, I really like the writing in this: while there’s a lot of it, all of it feels vital to the feel and the narrative, and having the hypertext for looking at specific things gives me a feeling of agency in reading the different things, which is different than just having it all shoved my way.

I get the impression that it’s incomplete since once you get to the actual potion quaffing it’s just, like, a placeholder for what it’s going to be, and I’d love to see this get fleshed out and completed. (And maybe some artwork would be nice, but given the number of potion combinations, even writing text for all of them is going to be a challenge!)

Some artwork is definitely my next priority for this actually! I wanted to be able to have a visual to help sell the mood on each panel but ran out of time to make sketches for any of the pages in Jam time heh.

i LOVE combinatorial explosions and i HAVE abandoned a game because i got too ambitious with them

also omg flora game!!  wild to see compacts just casually mentioned in a strawb game, these don't come up a lot

this is a solid writing style too.  casual but competent.  lovely.

this was my very first ending:

> Becomes a full-on dragon and makes you into a partial clone of them via eating you and then letting you meld out from their tummy.

and i cannot stress enough how much i would enjoy reading this written out in full lmao.  laser targeted.  direct hit

also omg flora game!!

There’s also a starcow :)

ahh, I'm glad you enjoyed what's there! I definitely plan to flesh this out now that the Jam is over with.

I really liked the little story adventures you helped write on the Flora site itself, they were key sources of inspiration in my desire to learn Twine to begin with. It felt nice to bring it kind of full circle here :D

i don't have too much to say that hasn't been said already, the writing that's here is great!

i like the sort of way each page has its own nested subpages--this seems like a nice way to provide more context for the reader, similar to footnotes, etc. but i think they're used super effectively with the potion ingredients scene, where we can imagine ourselves taking out each ingredient from the box, then putting it back, and i love this specific line from the black key: "You're okay. You're great, in fact. So great that you're going to drop the key right now and grab something else. haha." just a super creative & fun way to have the page navigation work.

Thanks! I really like how Twine can easily link to more context and optional flavor text, but I wanted to make the experience a little more seamless and avoid any problems with it potentially not storing a variable if the built in back arrow is used! The variables involved in this case mostly just decide what color the potions are but still, the principle of the thing.

super good writing out of nowhere, wtf

u are doing us former warriors kids PROUD with this one

absolutely love the concept. the one thing i forsee being tricky is writing all (7 choose 3) endings. that's the exact forking problem that led me to simplify my twine; if you could pull it off, it'd be an absolute HELL of a feat.

as it is, this is very good. great aesthetic, and i love how you seamlessly integrated the link text into the description ^w^

Developer

Ahhh thank you! I'm definitely considering parsing the endings down a little since I'm having trouble fleshing them out uniquely from one another x) I don't want to diminish it too much though, since each missing ingredient is multiple cut endings with how it takes 3 at a time. I've really wanted to play around with Twine to make something a little more involved and I spent a lot of time reading up on inventory systems that I wound up not using in this case.

I didn't think the writing would go over so well though! Everyone's their own worst critic I suppose haha

trust me, if you're critiquing yourself over this, you're an even worse critic of yourself than i am

this is a treat of an entry with a great deal of style. wonderful work ^w^

Writing was fantastic, I’d love to see the endings written!

i like the idea of brewing a potion and getting different outcomes based on what you brew, and the little touches in the writing—branching paths can make for a surprising amount of work though, so it's understandable to run out of time to implement them. by my count including any 3 ingredients out of 6 makes 20 unique endings you would've had to write, and i do appreciate at least having a summary there of what the scene would've been. (a reduction from 6 to 5 ingredients would've cut that number in half, but still!) i agree with others in that a more finished version of this would probably be pretty good if you decide to keep working on it.

EDIT: oh and of course this rat posing for the logo is very, very cute.

I was so enraptured by the writing it actually came as a shock when I was hit with the unimplemented ending - the writing is super engrossing, and it sounds like a great, solid base for your game down the line. I also love the cover art - the character is super cute. :3

i'd love to see the more fleshed out version down the road :D

I like these sorts of alchemy games, it seems like you had quite a lot of combinations planned! The introductions for all of the ingredients adds a bit of fun flavor and foreshadowing. I hope you'll have a chance to continue developing the story!

Shame you didn't have time to write out all the endings. The writing was cute and well paced.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Once the judging period is over I definitely want to flesh it out and complete the ending paths, as well as more artwork throughout the tale itself :)

This is currently flagged as Windows-only, but Twine games are almost always playable in browser – I don’t see why this one wouldn’t be. I think if you upload the zip file you already have and mark it as “playable in the browser”, it will Just Work because your entrypoint is already “index.html”. Give it a look at https://twinery.org/cookbook/starting/twine2/publishing_on_itchio.html#step-3-uploading-project-files

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the tip! I actually looked at that page and just... completely blanked it, haha. I've made it browser-playable now, which will hopefully make it more accessible.
