I played this last night, but was incredibly tired and totally blanked on leaving a comment!

This was a really cool game. I loved the low-poly PS1-ish aesthetic. It really came together nicely. I was very impressed with the variety of gameplay. Exploring was cool, and the battle segments were fun and engaging.

I did find the controls a little tough a times (the exploration part took a minute to get used to on the train) but that also felt PS1 authentic.

Battling was good, but I did find it strangely difficult to hit the eyeball enemies with the wand attack. It often felt like my shots just went right through them. I almost gave up, but scraped by on my 3rd attempt.

The train section on the other hand, was a lot easier, though I did initially leap off the train XD

Overall this was a very impressive game, great work!

Thanks for playing amd leaving a comment! really appreciate it 😁

There was even more worse train exploration controls at first but fixed them up post release 😅  They currently work pretty well with a controller but not the best on a keyboard sadly and not sure how to fix that without losing the more interesting camera.

I've got a big update I need to finish up and upload that fixes the floating eyeball hit boxes 😅 Might get that done tonight...

Thank you again 😊

Kicking it right off the bat with a sick cutscene instantly grabbed me in. It was fun jumping around all the different gameplay styles, everything seemed to control pretty intuitively, but it might be useful to have some kind of indicator when the significant controls change. I think some of the gameplay could use with some tightening up, specifically the hitboxes - it felt like I was getting hit by those shockwave attacks even when I thought I was jumping over them at the right time, and in the runner section it definitely felt like I missed some attacks that I shouldn't have. But honestly, I was hyped like crazy by the end, you did a really great job with all the cutscenes and effects.

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed it :)  I'm actually doing more work on it so I will make some changes based on your recommendations! (Definitely want a prompt on the screen for when gameplay style changes haha). Been gutting and reworking all the rushed code to actually make it a not reusable mess xD  Thank you so much for playing though I appreciate it!

This is a really well-made and impressive game! I especially liked the opening animation and the song that went with it. It really set the mood for the game and reminds me of old-school video games. It is really cool that motion capture is made for the character’s movements, and the display of her moves in the opening really helped draw me into the game. Disclaimer: I actually don’t know this genre of video games very well so my experience definitely does not apply to most players, and I am not sure if my review can do it justice. This is maybe one of my first few tries at games like this, so I had a hard time knowing what I was supposed to do (ended up walking into the monster a few times and then slowly walking away from it). But after my first few attempts I managed to control the character better and got to the part where I have to shoot the monsters. I think this is definitely not an easy game for novices, but more experienced players will really appreciate it. The difficulty is actually just right I think, because it is engaging without being too difficult, if I am more used to coordinating the jumping and shooting. The sound effects and music pair very nicely with gameplay and the monsters are actually quite scary but I think it is effective in adding excitement to the game. I really like the touch of mahou shoujo themes in the weapon and the attacks, and the character is really cute!

Edits: Typos!

Thank you so much for playing :) The music is from some group that sells Japanese songs (They have a page on here too!).

I'm glad you had fun with it but I am working on a update to get some checkpoints to make the shooting section more manageable! You should try again and get up to the final sequence if you didn't before!

This is amazing, full stop. Are you using MoCap for the animations or just hand animated? My only complaint is the size of the subtitles being ultra small on a 4k monitor, even at 40"

Developer(+2)

Awee thank you so much 😊 it's motion captured animations, I used a mix of Mixamo ones and captured ones with a Rokoko suit (got my partner to strap in.. she's only like 160 cm tall and she had to fit into my 196cm oversized suit haha).

Oh did you play the jam version or one of the more current builds? I increased the subtitles size in version 1.2 i think 🤔 or is it too small even now?

Thank you so much for the feedback 😊

Wow, the cutscenes and animation is impressive. Nice job. both the magical girl and monsters look legit (in the retro lowpoly way). And the atmosphere is great too. For the game, it's quite good, but also quite difficult.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and the kind words 😊 Was it the third section of the shooter section you found hard in particular or? (Been tempted to nerf that part haha)

Submitted(+1)

yes the third section. It may be better if the check point is right after getting the wand.

Developer

ah cool, I'll make a adjustment to it thank you 😊 Any other critiques? I'm really trying to get it polished up so I can put it to rest and stop thinking about it 🤣 (and yep needs more sound effects and music haha )

The combination of danmaku and shooter is really cleverly executed. The cutscenes are also nicely done.

Thank you so much 😊

(I’m playing the jam version) Ok, I wish the control would be more clear in game because I keep having to look at the game page, and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to shoot after I get the wand (I’m on a laptop, so after clicking right to aim I cannot click left. The touchpad can’t handle simultaneous left-right clicks). I spent a long time in the beginning too because the camera disoriented me, but.

But oh boy. That’s some dedication. I can’t believe how much you get done in one month. The cutscenes, the area. I like the PSX aesthetics you’re gunning for. Btw, it runs smoothly with me (no fps problem) and I’m running a mid machine.

Here’s cheers for you, and I’ll check out the updated version later!

Developer

I did not have enough time to implement in game prompts for the controls >.< ... Added that to my to do list thank you!  :D The shooting is you hold right click to aim then left click to shoot but I never realised on laptop it would be an issue sorry! Technically a controller works with it I just didn't not it on the page (The final section has not been hooked up for controller yet) so maybe try one of you have one :)

And yep I'll get those shocking cameras fixed sorry haha!

Awee thank you :D  Only about two weeks though actually haha! The last day I got my partner to hop into a Rokoko suit just so I could get the animations for the cutscenes haha. And thanks for the heads up with the FPS!

Ill get a fix for laptops in there for you and let you know when thank you :)

Submitted(+1)

Oh, I do have a controller! I’ll have a try. Two weeks and you managed to have body tracking? That’s even more insane!

Developer(+1)

I just released a update for it! (Ver 1.2). It adds full controller support but also I made it so you can go into aim mode with Left Ctrl so hope that makes it a bit easier for you! There is also a in game pause menu (Escape) that lists the controls :)  Hope that helps out!

Well the animations are a mix of mixamo and rokoko but with the suit its really easy to get something done quick!

Cool, thank you!

You're doing some insane stuff conceptually here, going from a fixed camera movement system to a shooter to an on rails segment. I feel like you took some huge swings here which was so awesome :>

I think the train sequence at the beginning could have been improved if you made it so that the changing camera didn't change the direction you were moving, it led to me being suuuper disoriented.

Absolutely crazy that you put this super compressed anime OP, it's an off the wall decision that worked really well for me. This was scrappy and rough around the edges but a lot of fun with so much variation. Also the stylized buildings and autumn environment looked super cool!

Developer

Thank you so much! :)  Just quick question but did you have any FPS issues? (Someone else had a really bad fps, It's locked to 30 but it looked shocking on their recording)

Yeah I almost bite off more than I can chew but originally it was just going to be the exploration and the shooter section but then the train endless runner "like" idea popped into my head and well I had to do it haha!

Ah yeah that section needs a lot more love but I ran but of time xD I have done a tank control styled switching camera horror game before but had people complain about tank controls so this one I was like yep will just do free control (But didn't have enough time to implement a system when you go to the next screen the control stays the same till you release movement).

The compression was not intentional (And that opening is half finished haha) >.<'  Basically I found a site to buy anime styled music and I grabbed the youtube sample and used that for timing in the opening until they sent me the purchased one (The lower quality but affordable mp3...) and after the first few seconds the audio quality takes a dive off a cliff... Didn't have much other choice but to keep going at that point

Thanks for all the kind words :)

The game take too much time to really start. I ended bored before the protagonist gain her powers.

And the changes of the camera that change the controls in the train is a complete pain.

Supposedly have the quality of a PS1 game, but the FPS are on the floor, and I use a good PC. I suppose that Unreal Engine isn't the paragon of eficiency.

Developer

Hello, thanks for play, sorry it was not your cup of tea!

In regards to the fps it's locked at 30 to be more like a PS1 game and it's using Unreal 4.23 which is quite old so you should not be getting any dips lower than that. You may need to check your PC!

I really enjoyed and was impressed with the cutscenes, they were well animated and fun to watch! The artstyle is also consistent and everything worked well together. The final boss fight on top of the trains was fun!

I liked the idea of the different camera angles on the train in the beginning area, but they made it difficult to navigate. It was hard to tell which direction I was going when it would swap suddenly and be facing the opposite way. The story text was way too small. I also had a difficult time with aiming the magic wand and wished there was a crosshair.

Great work!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing  and enjoying it 😊  Thank you for the feedback ill address all of those in a update eventually (Last night was a mad dash just trying to get it all together... Needs a lot more music and sound effects too)
