i went use anouther game engine (godot engine)

Host

Only official Maker series engines are allowed for this jam, so Godot is not eligible for submissions.

Does this include Game Maker MV?  I noticed it wasn't on your website.

Host

Pixel Game Maker MV is allowed.

I just realized I should ask my question here. I have a pre-existing world for a DnD project I am working on and I just want to know if I could use it legally for my entry in this game jam. I don't have a plot written up for the game already but I do have more lore then what some people would start with in this jam. I figured it would be wise to ask permission to use in when the jam starts before I get too attached to the idea. sorry if this is a stupid question I just never tried a game jam before or even made a complete game with any engine I just really like RPG Maker Engines and wanted to join in the jam to see if I can spark something in me. Thanks.

Host

That’s not a stupid question at all! You’re allowed to use your pre-existing world and lore as a foundation for your game. The key rule is that the actual game development (maps, events, coding, etc.) must start during the jam period.

Hello! Is maniac's patch allowed for Rpg Maker 2003 games?

Host(+3)

Yes, Maniac’s Patch is allowed for RPG Maker 2003 games.

Perfect, thank you!

I was gonna ask this, how dare you (thanks!).

Would it be within the spirit of the event to be creative with the definitions of the theme words?

Example that I’m considering: interpreting “beyond” as a noun, like “the beyond” as in the afterlife or similar (as mentioned here), and so the phrase “Beyond Expectations” would be twisted to mean “expectations about the beyond” (and the subversion thereof).

Host

Playing with an alternate definition of "beyond" and twisting the theme in unexpected ways is within the spirit of the event. As long as your game conveys a clear connection to the theme, this kind of subversion is totally acceptable.

Sweet, thank you!

Hello there! I already know that we can use pre-exsisting plugin and art assets. Then what about map and events from previous project?

Like, if I want to reuse an event-only pac-man mini game that I made earlier, do I have to create a new map and redo those events 1 by 1? Or it is OK to copy paste the whole mapfile?

Thanks for the reply!

Host

While pre-existing assets like plugins and art are allowed, the actual game content (maps, events, etc.) must be made during the jam period. If you want to remake your Pac-Man mini-game, you can use your previous work as a reference, but it should be newly implemented for this project.

Hello! Maybe a stupid question, but I didn't understand the rule "The game must be able to load on Windows". Is it possible to make a Web game that will work on a PC without a download file, or will the game be estimated by download file?

Host

Not a stupid question at all! You can make a web game, but you still need to provide a Windows-compatible download for judging. While additional platforms (like web or Mac) are welcome, the judges will only guarantee evaluation of the Windows version of your game.

Thanks!

For the game jam, you can use music from the MV Trinity Resource Pack or other RPG Maker engines as long as you legally own them and your game is made in an official RPG Maker engine. Since RPG Maker Unite is part of the Maker series, you can use music from RPG Maker XP, VX Ace, 2003, MV, and MZ in your Unite project.

However, regarding using RPG Maker assets in other engines (like Unreal Engine), this depends on Gotcha Gotcha Games’ official terms of use. The clause you referenced suggests some assets may be used outside RPG Maker, but it’s best to check with official GGG support for confirmation on Unreal Engine or YouTube animations.

Hello! I have a question. Are we allowed to use original assets from our previous games or we have to remake everything?

The game is public yet the asset isn't. So I guess I need to remake those. Thanks for clarification.

Host

Hi there, there was a mistake. We do allow preexisting commissioned assets. My apologies.

have a question, Are we to only use RPG mechanics?

Host(+1)

No, you’re not limited to RPG mechanics. While the jam focuses on RPG Maker engines, you can create any type of game—RPG, adventure, puzzle, horror, visual novel, or something else. If you’re aiming for a more action-oriented game, Pixel Game Maker MV is also an option.

Do we need to credit default rpg maker assests? If so how would i go about doing that? Planning on a mix of default and fully original assests.

Host

You don’t have to credit default RPG Maker assets, but it’s appreciated if you do. If you’d like to include them in your credits, you can format it like this: “RPG Maker Default Assets provided by Gotcha Gotcha Games."

Hello!

I have a game concept for the jam that relies on simulated gambling as main theme of the game.

The ESRB website mentions simulated gambling in TEEN rated games, but I don't see this descriptor on the Wikipedia page linked on jam's Home Page, so I wanted to ask here if it's okay to use that theme.

Host(+2)

Yes, simulated gambling is allowed.

Any limits to what Unity plugins you can use for a Unite game? Just the default build plugins or anything I have license to use (and credit)? Can we modify the RPGMaker Unite app itself if the mods are made during the jam? I suppose a unity plugin for building assets isn't much different than using aseprite or mspaint but wanted to check.

Good luck everybody

Host(+1)

For RPG Maker Unite, you can use any Unity plugins as long as you legally own the license and credit them properly. There are no restrictions beyond ensuring that all modifications comply with RPG Maker Unite’s terms of use.

I see RPG maker Unite available in Unity asset store, how does it integrate with Unity? Can I use Unity to work on systems I'm familiar with and use Unite for things like map editing? Will it still be valid for the game jam? Thanks

Host

As long as RPG Maker Unite is the foundation of your game, you should be able to use Unity materials with it and submit it to the game jam.

Submitted

Hello, I have another question. A few jams ago I modified a publicly available plugin (which is allowed by the plugin maker as long as I don't share the modified version) for my previous games. Since the modified plugin is not publicly available,  do I need to remodify the original plugin for the jam or am I allowed to use the one I have now?

Host (1 edit)

This will depend on the ToS of the creator! If it's MIT or allows modification, you should be able to use it.

If I made a free game for this competition where there is the potential to win some money, that counts as commercial use right?

Host

Depending on the creator, any form of monetary gain can be considered as commercial.

Submitted

1. If winning a prize requires commercial license for assets, if I decline the (potential) prize money, can I use assets with only free license? At least according to my logic, it has nothing to do with 'commercial' then.

2. The rules on your front page say that pre-existing assets are acceptable and for 3 weeks you've replied to all questions in the FAQ that 'previously commissioned assets are acceptable', but now I saw that you've written in this thread that you can use previous assets from your games only if you've shared the assets with the community? What's the deal with that?

Host (3 edits)

1. We recommend refrainining from using non-commercial use assets for this game jam. As long as the contest has prize money involved, individual creators can mistake it as using the assets with intent of commercial gain.

2. There was a mistake in communication with the staff and it has been rectified and clarified in the FAQ :)

Can I use non-commercial use assets?

Host

Depending on the creator, any form of monetary gain can be considered as commercial. So we recommend refraining from using such assets.

It's a very old script from 2012-2014 so idk if the creator is selling them anymore which is the problem.
Here is the script btw:

Yeah, I decided not to use that battle system,  I have another question though. Am I allowed to put my game on pay what you like and not free?(if I have the legal rights to use the assets)

Host

As long as the assets created allows commercial use (e.g. Donations are considered commercial since the developer gets monetary gain) and the judges and participants aren't required to pay, this should be fine.

Thanks, you guys will be able to tell the difference between pay what you like and pay right?
Itch.io makes it looks like you have to pay as the button to not pay is tiny.

Host

We can tell the difference, but to avoid confusion or making your entry less accessible to others, we suggest keeping it fully free during the voting period.

Voting? I thought there were judges?

Hi!  I checked the ESRB Teen rating which says that "aggressive depictions of violence with minimal blood" are okay, if I have an accidental death where the scene cuts off right before any blood or anything would happen but the person obviously died (as in via context, not through graphic imagery), is that okay?

Also, I saw someone say psychological horror (without strong violence) with an unsettling atmosphere and dark themes is fine - is a surgery situation where you don't see any of the parts and are just going off of vague text descriptions okay?  Thx in advance!

Host

It would depend on how graphic the text is. An easy way to tell if something is safe if a creator won't get demonetized from Youtube for example.

hello there ggg_gamejam

I wanted to ask if we can use the easy rpg player instead of the rtp.exe on rpgmaker2000/2003 games, thank you!

Host(+1)

Hello, it should be OK as easy rpg player is a supplement for RM2k/3.

Thank you for the quick reply!
