I like the world map! I appreciate the WIP pages, it gave a pretty good outline of what this game wanted to be.

The audio is definitely one of its strong suits-- It's neat that my punches were sync'd to the music, and I think you have something that you could explore there when you implement the active skills-- (MUD + Rhythm genre???)

Great job!

-It seems like I can keep fighting the monster after reaching 0 hp.

-I don't see Mud School on the world map. Where's my home-town?!

Developer

I suppose there bugs to be found :)

Since I did adopt this from the actual MUD that I play, that world sets it up so that the schools are actually not accessible by regular means, thus not on the world map.

The game is good

I really love the UI and how it’s DOS style.

And the gameplay was really good as well!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words!

I'm really happy that there are generally people that don't find the UI off-putting. Gives me much more reason to invest more time and effort into it.

Wow, I'm blown away by the UI, such a big fan of the DOS style text mode. The music and sfx are really good too, but I wish they were simpler, matching the UI more. I could really see this as a full release with more content.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging comments!

For simpler music, would it mean something like chiptunes, or the kind of midi music that was more common in the DOS days? I think I might actually do up some midi tracks, maybe.

Submitted(+1)

Very well put together. I honestly loved everything about this. Very cool!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words! It's definitely giving me fuel to push forward with more developments to improve on it.

Submitted(+1)

The UI is pretty cool, I didn’t grow up with this style of games, but I still found it interesting. The sound track is amazing, and it looks like the game has a bunch of systems already developed, and maybe more planned for the future that could be cool!

Congratulation on this fun game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words!

I definitely have to give props to the team members that worked on the music, it was totally their hard work that deserves the praise. Wasn't too sure how the textmode interface would do with players not familiar with it, but it does looks like there's enough interest for me to keep working on it.

I'm actually going to code a drawing program in love2d next! One that will specifically output ASCII/ANSI  graphic files that can be loaded into my future textmode projects. Hoping that will help me flesh out the TextUI for more entertainment and engagement.

Submitted(+1)

Wow, that sounds like a cool project. The addition of some graphics could help some the immersion without diluting the text base experience!

Submitted(+1)

it was fun to play, and the music was really good.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words!

Yes, I really am grateful for my team mates that did the music. I have to screenshot this to inform them in our team discord

Submitted(+1)

It was nice! Level 3, win by level 6 monster.
Why this type of graphics?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Nice reach there, 3 levels up. I don't think I was able to reach further than that too.

I grew up in the DOS/BBS era, doing my first programs in 1989. So textmode is deeply rooted in my mind when it comes to UI. I'm currently playing CoffeeMUD, where MUDs are basically the grandfathers of MMORPGs... multiplayers, persistent world, ability to craft and change the environment... just that everything is in text. :)

I've been playing, and still playing Coffeemud for 3 years now.

Submitted(+1)

reminds me of old school rogue!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging comment! I was hoping for the rogue feel... definitely not fleshed out enough to be called a roguelite or roguelike yet. But who knows? :)

Submitted(+1)

I really like the nostalgic feel of this game! The mix of a TUI style interface, oldschool RPG mechanics, and that awesome soundtrack makes for a unique experience. The music syncing with attacks is a nice touch, and the whole aesthetic reminds me of classic DOS games and early MUDs.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words!

Yes, I am really grateful for my team mates that did the music. So thankful that parts we were able to put out in time managed to give some experience for the player

Submitted(+1)

love the concept. I didn't play MUDs a ton but I did play a lot of janky text DOS RPGs and traditional roguelikes so it's hitting the nostalgia anyway.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

I did go into this with my eyes wide open, committing to a niche (textmode ui) of a  niche (MUDs) so am truly grateful for any report of it hitting the right notes for a player.

Submitted(+1)

woah this is cool XD

can't wait to play it when it's completed XD

I also like the artstyle used here eventho it's mostly text based. But the UI makes me remember old computers' interface so it really fit with the game XD

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing and the encouraging words!

I wasn't sure if I'd be finishing this, but somehow I get the feeling that I will be using this game as a testbed for certain programming concepts. so it will gradually flesh out into the Idle RPG game I envisioned.

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for the comment, I've also played your game. Here are my takes:
- I love the fact that it looks like a TUI ( very geeky nerdy of you haha )
- The music is great, it's like a combo between epic music and a bard's tale.
- The color scheme makes me nostalgic
- The fight mechanism, reminds me of NGU Idle

What I wish would have been different:

- The time between hits in the battles is a bit slow
- The top black bar during the game to span across the entire screen as well as xp
- Some images of the mobs you fight :D

All in all, very nice entry Xanthia, good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, the encouraging comments and great suggestions!

The timing for the auto-melee hits were spaced at 3 seconds because the player was supposed to have time to activate more triggered skills for additional combat damage or recovery (like Tripping for thieves, Bullrush for fighters, Heal for clerics, Fireball for mages etc)... but I didn't have the time to implement those selections for the player to choose during Enhancing stage (where you use your trains and practice points on class skills etc)

The combat screen is really empty, isn't it? Am really apologetic for having to subject players to such an incomplete game (the space on the screen was really for all the scope that didn't make the 10 day timeframe)

Don't feel bad, I mean we are all trying our best and the point of the jam is to learn <3 I for one have learned from your game that I am actually interested in making games that look like TUI.

Developer

Wow nice! For some reason, TUI is my first love (DOS, with Turbo Pascal) and seems to be what I tend to fall back on. The ANSI library I did for basecode prep for the jam, I discovered, is still buggy. But I have a feeling that I will derive much joy continuing to build on it and improve with all the learning.

Submitted(+1)

never played a MUD before tho😅 —still figuring things out, but it’s pretty cool!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! MUDs are really like playing WOW or MMORPGs, but all in text, and using only text commands.

Believe it or not, I am still playing one, and have been for the last 3 years (same one, same persistent world)

Submitted

whoah that sounds pretty cool!

Submitted(+1)

Super cool game! Huge flashbacks to my the firs MUDs I ever played.

Congrats, must;ve been pretty complex to build

Developer

Thanks for playing and the encouraging comments!

I think I broke many coding conventions by doing quick and dirty methods just to get something going. It is definitely a good learning experience and so grateful for such a supportive and positive community.

Submitted(+1)

Nice RPG game, I would like to see equipments, more item etc . Also from the map it seems like there is a bigger world to explore! Good job on the jam!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the encouraging comments!

Indeed, I fell short of time. I could not implement the various unique methods each class had to bring extra attacks and recovery for battles, as well as buffs through equipment and drops.

The map is only showing one continent. The full game that I was hoping to tribute has like 5 continents in the real world map! :)

Submitted(+1)

a grindy rpg where you don't have to do anything? nice :)

loved the music and how it synced to punches. can't wait to see how it plays when the enhancements are available

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the encouraging words!

Indeed, it was supposed to feel grindly around level 10, which was about where you would discover that you can automate your character and make it trigger menu options in all the sections based on conditions you choose.

So it would then become a true idle champion game, letting it grind based on your choices while you go have a coffee or something.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time. But I learnt a lot from this first jam, and I do hope to have time to keep working on it!

Submitted(+1)

Really nice game, with a layer of strategy and complexity!

I would've liked a smaller version of this game, to grasp the key concepts, while allowing you to polish the menus and battles more. Right now, battles are a waiting game, checking in a corner if you miss or hit, but leaving a lot of empty room in the middle

I loved the old Commodore aesthetic, and the map is eye catching! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for taking the time to play and comment! I definitely did not get the time to implement all the different ways the various classes could use their mana or movement points to actively trigger additional damaging or recovery skills.

Submitted(+3)

I really like the idea and would love to see this game develop further! (Quite intrigued by the world map ;))

Developer

Can you believe, that map is not even the real world map? It's only one territory. There are like 4 or 5 more continents. Phew! Would have been something if I could have implemented the idea I had, which actually allowed free roaming, but with fog-of-war to discover different routes and areas.

~oooooooh~
Okay, I'm hyped.

Yesssss TEXT MODE GRAPHICS! Love them! Great mood setting music! Gameplay is understandably very lowkey as it's based on MUDs, but overall seems to work well. Great job finishing the jam!!

Developer

Thanks for the encouraging words! Yes, my fave is really the music too! So grateful for having team mates that delivered with the original music.

I really liked the mood and the overall DOS text adventure style! (Although I never played this type of games before.)

Fight music is a total banger! Hits fitting the rhythm of the song is a nice touch.

After several fights and level ups it felt that we've seen everything we can do in the game. It would be great to play an extended version of this game with equipment and other stuff.

Great game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the encouraging comments! I didn't notice the hits syncing until a playtester mentioned it to me too!

The joke might be on me, where I did TOO well in simulating the GRIND part of the title. The idea is that by the time it got grindy, you would have unlocked more than enough menu options in all the sections (Enhancing, Equiping, Exploring, Encountering, Exchanging) that you can actually preselect options to fire off on selectable conditions so that your char becomes fully automated and your champion grinds the level while you go for a coffee.

Fulfulling the IDLE CHAMPION part of the title.

Unfortunately, I was not able to implement the idle mechanic in time.
