[Hobby Project] Looking for 2D Artist – Bloodborne/Blasphemous-Inspired Metroidvania (3-Level Indie Game)

Hey everyone

I'm currently working on a 2D side-scrolling indie game inspired by the gritty, gothic atmosphere of Bloodborne, the dark religious imagery of Blasphemous, and the exploration of classic Metroidvania games.

This is a hobby project (passion-driven), but with serious intent to release a polished demo and eventually a full game. I'm a solo developer right now, handling game logic, level design, and storytelling – and I’m looking for a 2D artist or illustrator who'd love to collaborate on the visual side of the project.

Game Concept:

  • Genre: Metroidvania / Action Platformer

  • Style: Dark gothic/Victorian, dramatic lighting, no pixel art – we're aiming for hand-drawn, painted, or vector-based assets (think Bloodborne, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight with a more painterly or inked look)

  • Scope: A short narrative-driven game with 3 levels, each with distinct environments (forest, crypt, and coastal ruins)

  • Main Character: A barefoot teenage boy wearing Victorian-era clothing, equipped with a sword, a steampunk lantern, and a flintlock firearm. (Design inspiration available)

  • Enemies: Undead priests, monstrous forest creatures, pirate-like specters

  • Themes: Death, memory, ritual, and liberation

What I need:

  • Character concept art (turnarounds, action poses)

  • Sprite sheet-style sequences: idle, walk, run, jump, melee attack, ranged attack

  • Enemies and possibly bosses

  • Simple backgrounds or parallax layers for each level

  • Style guide or general art direction (optional but amazing!)

Again: NO pixel art – I’m aiming for a more unique and atmospheric look.

This is a hobby project, so there's no upfront payment, but I’m offering revenue share. That means:

If the game makes any profit (through sales or donations), we will split the revenue fairly based on each person’s contribution.

Also, you will retain full credit for your artwork and will be part of the game's official credits and promotional materials.

If you're an artist who loves dark fantasy and Metroidvania games, and you're looking to build your portfolio or collaborate on a potentially beautiful (and haunting) game, I’d love to chat!

Hello! I'm a illustrator with a love of character designs, i work with vectors as well as raster graphics in illustrator and procreate!

If you're curious, check out my website for some examples!https://gracemcglynnart.myportfolio.com/ I love all things dark and horror so this would be a fun project!

Hey there! I assume music isn't something you're thinking about yet but when you do get to that point I would be happy to contribute music towards this since Metroidvania stuff is right up my alley!

If you're interested here's my showreel, I've also got a few Metroid remixes on my YouTube channel too:
