Description
Passing Time is a short ambient piece composed for a reflective or emotionally restrained moment in a game - something like a character waiting in solitude, trapped in a space they can't yet leave. Genre-wise, it's a blend of piano, ambient, and music box type stuff.
The composition follows a slow harmonic arc in C minor with soft piano voicings supported by warm, filtered pads and topped with a sort of music box to add a sense of innocence and longing.
The track was composed in FL Studio (in 24 hours) using Spitfire LABS (Soft Piano), FLEX, and DSK Overture (using the celesta for the music box), along with layered reverb and other filtering/EQ.
Message from the artist
Thanks a ton for listening! I'm unfortunately super busy around this time so I didn't have a whole lot of time to put this together. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
The piece is about the desire for freedom. It captures the stillness and isolation of confinement. The character in the piece doesn't escape; they just long for escape, passing time by dreaming of it. Freedom is always just out of reach.

I don't know why, but I got a terrible depressive mood... And also a lot of feeling of loneliness, as if all people disappeared from the Earth... Great job...
P.S. ...
Beautiful instrumentation and composition. Quietly moving and emotional. Solid work!
A very peaceful track! I think you capture the "waiting in solitude" feeling very well. I would up the volume of the contrabass a bit, but the mix is solid other than that. Great job!
Piano + music box has got to be one of my favorite instrument combinations frfr
I love how moody this is, and it really hits that feeling of isolation for me with how spacious the melody is. I find the take on not actually attaining freedom especially interesting, as the song melodically feels very resigned as if this person has been stuck in captivity for a long time. To me there's not much movement or tension that would imply anger or intent to escape captivity, just a persistent acceptance that this is life. Beautiful work!
This is deliciously moody and thoughtful off the bat. So downtempo that it really has you hanging on whatever could be coming next. Choice of voicings and patches here is genuinely gorgeous - the leads are pleasant to listen to but almost sombre in their delivery. The piano playing is lovely and really puts a ton of emphasis on playing around the chords. Hints of sound design and drones extending out in the background to ground the track and provide some additional ear candy.
This was great and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Thematic execution here is on point, leaning unapologetically into the concept of desire for freedom instead of freedom itself. It is wonderfully pensive and moving in a lot of ways. I'd love to hear more in this style. Great work!
the gentle tempo and choice of instruments for this track is dreamy... i would love even more reverb to really feel that melancholy atmosphere that you've built a foundation for! :3c
the steady energy throughout the piece is a good compositional choice, as it works metaphorically for the idea of the "desire for freedom". nice work!! shame that you were really busy, but you still put out something amazing~
Nice work, really pretty, really ambient
The slow pace is captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. Good job.
Great ambient submission, I could have this play on loop for hours! And I think you've captured the concept you were going for well, I feel a great deal of loneliness coming from the composition and blend of timbres! Nicely done!
I would totally imagine that in a game like Omori ahah, a depressive moment but kinda wholesome at the same time, the music box is nice for that aspect. It might be a bit long though since the emotional state doesn't involve much. Great atmosphere and good job !
Very nice and emotional track, I liked it a lot !
The pensive and melancolic of the mix between your piano and your music box fits very nicely with both themes, and the arrangement is very pleasant to listen to.
Nice work !
I like this, its kinda cute!
Great execution for sure
wow, I think you executed your idea perfectly! this song totally feels like a period of solitude and reflection in a game. im a sucker for piano so i really enjoyed this track. great work!
I don't think there is much to say with this one, absolutely nails it on the head in terms of execution and really sets a nice atmosphere for a game that sounds interesting to play! Also very pretty artwork, everything just comes together to provide a really cohesive blend of comforting elements together and give a whole soundscape-esque vibe to the song.
I love the different instruments you used, they complimented your composition nicely. The songwriting on display is very beautiful and reserved.
Nice work
The music box complimented the piano very nicely!
I can imagine this song remixed into a fast paced one pretty easily which I think is cool. Like the same song but fast paced to represent them actually escaping!
I think you hit the execution of your theme perfectly! Everything you describe I can feel so massive props for your work. I have nothing really to say other than good job really, super strong submission!
