Description
A kind of Wild-West-folky theme. This would the main theme/exploration theme for a sandbox wild west action game (something along the lines of Red Dead Redemption, maybe?)
I used Musecore and Garageband as my DAWs, and recorded the wind parts with help from my friends (I did the Trumpet, choir and whistling, and two friends of mine did English Horn and Flute).

A big inspiration for this track was actually the Hidden Village's theme from Zelda Twilight Princess, but also just every western ost ever made haha.

Some musical trivia :
The track starts with a Mario Cadance (bVI - bVII - I) but backs out - just before resolving - to the scale's minor four chord, which becomes the "new" tonic (the actual tonic wasn't really solidified yet, but still). The progression for the A part is mostly just the tonic, but then for a second we get the MAJOR four chord, to give us that Dorian-hopeful sound. The B part is actually the resolution of that Mario Cadance (which comes back every once in a while), and is meant to feel a bit heavenly and surreal (which is why I added the choir in the background). The progression of the B part uses a lot of Modal mixture (borrowing from Mixolydian and Phrygian in this case), and at the end it resolves back to the A part.

All of this was really rushed (since I only had a day or so to the jam), but I really like the musical content here, and would like to expand on it in the future.

Message from the artist
Hope you like it! Made this one in less than 24 hours, since i just came back from a convention.

Theme

Freedom
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The idea here is to convey a vast, free landscape, and I'd imagine the girl from the picture is actually a cowgirl riding around there. There are also some musical ideas that illustrate yearning for freedom (through the use of the Dorian mode and the Mario Cadance).

made in less than 24 hours is crazy, really gives off that wild west vibe

Developer

Thank you! I'm really glad I was able to replicate the sound well :D

like... just how? How do you come up with a folk-country tune like that? Teach me, please. Of all the genres, I think I'd most like to learn how to make tunes like this.... Horses... cacti...

That's a good tune!

Thanks haha!

For me, a lot of the times (and in this case) I just think of a theory concept (in this case, the mario cadence, which to me kind of encompasses the feeling of freedom) and give it little twist (in this case, not resolving it immediately). Then I just kind of play with this idea on a piano or something till I have a more complete idea - melody, harmony, maybe lyrics - and then I just start translating it to sheet music or recording it into a DAW.

For folky tunes, I find that using modes is really helpful (espcially Lydian and Dorian, they have a very folky sound), and writing melodies that are more lyrical and easy to sing, Hope that helps lol (sorry if I rambled too much, I just really enjoy talking about the process)!

I like the folk-country feel to the beat but I feel like the notes on the horns and others sounded off like the notes were flat or something

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, there were some tuning problems that I wasn't able to fix due to time restraints 😬

this one stands out for sure to the other submissions, super impressive with how many live instruments were used for this! I love the way this was composed, it really gives off that wild west theme you were going for.  I think the fact that all of this could have been recorded in 48 hours and put together is incredibly impressive, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! Yeah, it was a bit of a stretch, but it couldn't have happened if I didn't have such quick-to-respond friends!

A yearning for... cactus

Instrumentation and composition (those  galloping triplets especially)  come together perfectly to form that western vibe you were going for.  Solid track overall, and nice whistling!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I've been finding out from this jam that apparently I'm a pretty solid whistler haha!

Submitted(+1)

I like the creativity of the genre you went with! Definitely gives a wild west freedom sort of vibe. I agree with the others that with more time the live instruments could've been tuned a bit more but it's definitely a lot to try and coordinate in such a short amount of time!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, that's exactly it - if I only had more time lol...

Submitted(+1)

First of all, using live instruments for a 48 jam is insane and I love that for you. Second, the composition is perfect for the concept you're going for. It really does sound like the opening credits of a spaghetti western movie, with the music fading out on a whistle as the audience is introduced to the protagonist.  well done!

Developer

Thanks! I'm really glad I was able to pin down the atmosphere, since this is the first time I've ever tried composing in this genre (at least that I remember).

I absolutely love hearing people explain their music theory choices! The instrumentation here sounds really good and gives it a lot of character, definitely selling the open wild west theme with those horns and whistling. The live instruments sound very good and although at some parts they can go a bit too out of tune with each other (imo), the effect it creates gives the song a whole new level of authenticity and wild west-ness and I like that a lot. Overall the atmosphere was great, solid work!

Developer

Thank you very much! The live instruments were really what most of the work went into (and yet I still couldn't get them completely right haha), but I'm really glad to see people like their inclusion :)

Submitted(+1)

The idea of the wild west to express freedom is indeed a choice that makes sense, nice concept ! I like the fact that there are a lot of real recorded instruments, it gives authenticity to the whole atmosphere. The whistling is also well done :) Cool one !

Developer

Thanks! Since my very first jam I've wanted to use live instruments, and so I've been doing it more and more. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Dude this is freakin AWESOME!! i love the live playing so much it was so worth doing!!!!!!!

the track is really well thought out i love the feeling of the wild west here so much!!!i hope this does WELL in this jam

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked it :D

And I hope it does well too lol!

Submitted(+1)

OKAY Wild West is definitely not something I was expecting xD I love that you also recorded this. It's quirky, it sounds good, your technical breakdown went over my head because I get absolutely none of it though but really appreciate it.

Anyways that was really cool!

Developer

Thanks! I'm really happy that I decided to go in this wild west direction, since it seems to have really clicked with people :D

I'm sorry if the breakdown was a bit unapproachable, I just really like getting into this stuff lol.

Glad you liked it, thanks!

I love the vibe of this one! I think the track could use some smoother transitions, like into the part with the vocal backing. And it was nice to see your thinking behind the compositional decisions.

You're a great whistler lol. Nice job!

Developer

Thank you! I also think the transitions aren't great, and if had more time it would've been one of the first things I'd fix.

And I'm glad you liked my whistling! I "practice" alot (as in I really like to whistle when I do basically anything).

Submitted(+1)

Some really nice things happening! Great writing, feels like a western, spot on!

The tough thing about using live instrumentation is the intonation piece! It sounds like english horn might to firm up that embouchure and use some more air particularly when moving to the lower register!

Some percussion would defintely help those "big hit" moments.

Great job!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, the winds were recorded super quickly, and both of my friends were at family gatherings at the time, which meant they were really rushed.

I didn't really think about adding more percussion, but that's a great idea! I definitely will if I'll continue working this track.

Thank you very much for all the feedback, I really appreciate it!

i really appreciate the music theory analysis of what your piece does throughout — i have a lot of interest in music theory analysis as i continue learning composition, so it's great to follow along with your summary!! :D

that brief IV chord in section A is perfect in how it hints at section B's due arrival and change of pace, a nice small thing that i appreciate! the overall atmosphere with the chosen instrumental palette is lovely and fits your videogame concept very well; kudos to live-recording!! some additional mixing would really bring everything together, but 24 hours is an even stricter timeframe to work with than 48 ;-;

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the analysis, since that's always been one the most fun parts in these jams for me.

And yeah, I could've only wished I had more time, but alas, I had to make do lol.

Submitted(+1)

really interesting how you combined musescore with live recorded stuff, super cool approached to doing something like this. love the vibes good work :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! It's actually the first time I used the musescore sounds for a project. I didn't have any other decent option for the percussion, guitar and banjo, and musesounds actually sounds pretty decent, so why not!

Submitted(+1)

I love it! The whistling part is so good I kind of wish it was more of it haha. Nonetheless the whole track is very tasty!

Developer

Thank you so much! Yeah, the whistling felt so right for this genre lol, glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

A unique style to fit the theme and I would say western fits the theme very well!

I also like that a lot of it was made with real instruments. Gives it a unique feel that adds to the freedom.

Developer

Thank you! I'm really glad I got the setting across well, and that the live instruments were a good choice lol

Submitted(+1)

This was great, I enjoyed it. There were a few rough points, like how the mixture between the flute and the English horn wasn't as smooth as I hoped for, and how the transition from the choir part back to the guitar wasn't the smoothest, but it's not too much of a big deal. The song was still quite enjoyable despite these, plus big kudos for committing to real instruments. Good work!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, if I had more time I definitely would've worked on these issues first, but alas lol. Glad to hear the track was still enjoyable tho!

Submitted(+1)

Back in OST 7, I tried recording part of my piece on my clarinet. It sounded terrible so I cut it out and used a vst instead. Recording with real instruments is defiantly a challenge and I think it's really cool that you completely committed to it. The theme was very creative too, making this a very memorable submission. However, I think the tuning inconsistency comes through the most when you have all instruments playing in unison. I'm pretty sure you can cover up tuning issues a little by playing harmony instead of total unison (I don't know much about this stuff though so take it with a grain of salt). I will say it does give the whole thing a wild western vibe, so maybe you were actually going for that. Great work tho!

Developer

Thanks for the advice! And yeah, the tuning was a bit off. Since half of the instruments were recorded by different people, I had a hard time getting the tuning and tempo consistent, and it definitely shows. I'll try more harmonies for next time though, that's a great idea! Thanks again :D

Submitted(+1)

This nails the open landscape feeling. Very pleasing choice of instruments and voicings - not often that you come across a submission that really leans into the wild-west vibe. Really nice progression and textures layered in here. I love the use of the whistle as the track fades out - contextually it just sounds so good!

Always give kudos to the effort put into actually recording live instrumentation, and in a crunchtime jam no less? Great work! Very unique submission as a whole. Best of luck!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that the effort was worth it, and that the atmosphere came across well!

And yeah, the live instruments were a struggle, but I love using them in jams! They add some great textures, and I can force my friends to record for me >:)
