Description
Game Description:
A Moment of Clarity is intended to be a visual novel with elements of action gameplay, having the mind of the MC be the setting for the project and tasking the MC with breaking out of an imagined prison within the mind of the MC.

Music Description:
For This EP, we chose to make a mixed-electronica soundtrack, blending between dark atmospheric textures/ambiences and more melodic material as a way to bridge the conceptual gap between metaphorical chains that constrains people and the key that allows people to be free of their constraints.

01 - Chaotic Blooming (BGM for a cutscene whereby we introduce the MC and the problem of escaping a prison that takes place inside of their mind)
02 - The Fight For Freedom (BGM for the climax and resolution of the MC’s journey, breaking out of the mental prison and dealing with the aftermath)
03 - Sunlight Washes The Stilts (BGM for End Credits Cutscene of MC’s Journey, where the MC is able to smile and pursue their hobby)

Software:
We used VSTs and other bits of software to create this. The non-exhaustive list includes: FL Studio, Bitwig, Kontakt (various libraries), Arturia Analog Lab, SINE Player (various libraries), Vital, Harmor, and more.

Processes and Inspirations:
We very much let the picture prompt and the text prompt shape the direction that we took with our music, going for several vibes and emotions as is fitting with the dynamic nature of the mind. We were inspired by existing works of music that had projected a similar theme which helped tie the EP together.

Message from the artist
We enjoyed making this project together and we hope you enjoy listening to this project!

Theme

Freedom
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
We used both the image and the text prompt as inspiration for our project. The outlined window stilts brought about by the contrast between the bright and dark colors of the picture made us think of thoughts (or even mentalities) that trap people from living the life they want to live. This is also apparent from the female figure reaching her hand out to the lights of the darkened room as well as the shadow of the bird (which is often a symbol of agency and the ability to move beyond the current circumstances).

Ultimately, we had decided to make our hypothetical game revolve around the mental aspects of what traps people from manifesting their passions as our identities are shaped by what we do and how we internalize our interactions. As such, we believe this conceptualization embodies the both the text prompt of "Freedom" as well as the Picture theme as a significant factor of such is the way people are able to manifest and what systems of thought guide/hinder people.

Production is on point, wow!

The first half of The Fight For Freedom sounds like it could almost be a League Of Legends Worlds anthem 😁

Great stuff!

digging the atmospheric quality for all these tracks!! i did not expect the second track to take a turn as it did and i love it!!!! great work :DD

NICE WORK! That goes HARD! Great use of space and tension and release! Bravo!

You did a great job keeping continuity throughout the soundtrack. The Fight For Freedom was just awesome (adding some more sub-bass to the buildup/drop would bring the energy out a lot!). I enjoyed the serenity of Sunlight Washes The Stilts--it would make a great credits theme. Nice job!

I like all the variety of this OST ! A lot of things to process :) the approach of the theme is nice and well explained as well, great job !

Some really neat sound design and foley work in Chaotic Blooming - really helps to set up what is to come and provide a realistic jumping off point. Loving the subtle tones in this to start setting the stage for what's coming.

The Fight for Freedom is fantastic. From the distorted vocoder vocals to the choice of leading patches and synthesis and emphasis on rests to really sell the impact of some of these voices - it's buttery smooth. This track, for me personally, screams early Tekken game soundtracks, and I absolutely adore that vibe. The latter half dips away from this entirely and very much does its own thing, making for a nice wind-down after the hard-hitting first half, but yeah for me this was pretty sick!

Wrapping up with Sunshine Washes the Stilts - much quieter and more downtempo than the previous. Has a heroic feel to it, but it doesn't rely on massive fanfares or any kind of in-your-face celebration, instead preferring to err on the quieter side of victory. The orchestration here is really pretty and layered quite well. I like the fake-out crescendo - fully expected it to kick into said massive fanfare at this point, but it surprised me in the best way possible.

Super solid work - these were a blast to listen to, and are good examples of diversity in writing. My favorite remains The Fight for Freedom personally, but I enjoyed all of them. Best of luck! :)

Appreciate your kind words about each of the songs, I love sound design work so participating with pancake on these songs was a very worthwhile experience! Very insightful commentary from you, thanks for sharing!! :D

Great variety and sound design on this soundtrack, the tracks are very evocative for what they are meant to represent in the story you've imagined, it was really enjoyable to listen to !
All tracks were great, I really liked the variety of sections in The Fight For Freedom, it was pretty engaging to sit through so great job on that !

I like the atmosphere on this, it's very densely layered. The dubstep thing on the second track was too much for me, it's too loud, but I like the distorted screeching synths. The mixing is on point.

Wow. Really cool ideas with the sound effects in these tracks! Very immersive and demonstrative. I enjoyed it a lot!

the electronic atmosphere throughout your triad of tracks is amazing... you two did amazing with conveying the storyline of your videogame concept throughout!! the hard-hitting production of "The Fight For Freedom" really caught me off-guard after "Chaotic Blooming" HAHA ^o^

something about "Chaotic Blooming" reminded me of Hyper Light Drifter... i think both the electronic production and the themes of personal struggle? excellently done, you two!!

Loved it! That drop in The Fight for Freedom was incredible. I liked how tight the three songs are and how well aimed at the theme.  Nice collaboration!

Loved the variety! I especially really liked the use of the organ in the third track, I felt like it added a lot to the atmosphere.

Big wow from me, no idea how you managed this in such little time. I know everyone has said this already but the mix and sound design are crazy, well done!!!!

Guys... IT'S FNG AWESOME!

But first, about the tracks:

Chaotic Blooming is a high-quality and high-atmospheric, deep sound design. This noise, against which monstrous electric sounds appear... BAM! In short, I love using samples correctly! Cool job!

The Fight For Freedom - Microsoft Sam has never sounded more threatening... and... BAM BAM BAM! Dynamic, cool, already a bit old-school in its own way... Wow! The end in the form of a short break resembles a rest screen, or a download... Only more detailed

Sunshine Washes The Stilts is A beautiful ending... soulful orchestration, small rattles, organ and.. It's just wonderful.

You know what? I don't even know what else to say, lol. Well, the only thing I know is that I really want to write a short story based on your soundtrack...

You're definitely one of the likely winners, huh)

Woah, layers, textures, mixing and sound design in general are really good. The last piece seem to stand out a bit with a different style, but overall great album. The Fight for Freedom is my favorite from those three.

I really like the different vibes of this ! My favorite has to be The Fight For Freedom, loved the mean drop and sound design in general. I think each track merge perfectly with the game idea you had :))

I absolutely love this one! It feels like I just went through an entire journey, the last song is so cute!
