Description
GAME DESCRIPTION
In the game you would build a rocket and fly around space, fighting other ships and visiting planets to buy new ship parts and collect things. The Earth has become a pretty terrible, post-apocalyptic place to live so everyone is trying to get into space to escape. The game would have a sort of cyberpunk style with old tech cobbled together, see my little drawing on the cover art.
TRACK LIST
1. Build Your Rocket - Will play when you are building your rocket using parts you've collected throughout the game. I listened to a few old garage compilations on YouTube before I made this because I wanted to have the player building rockets in a garage (funny!!). You might be able to hear the classic garage organ sound I used for the bass line.
2. Blast-Off!! - Really happy with this one, it's short and sweet and plays each time you launch your newly built rocket into space. Orchestral Tools recently released some free orchestral instruments, including a solo cello with LEGATO! I've been wanting a free one of these for ages and I've been using it a lot ever since I downloaded it. I think the little cello melody I did here is nice, it's ascending because you're going up in a rocket. The choir in the background is also from Orchestral Tools. A lot of this is basically copied from the next track, Open Space, because I wanted this song to kind of lead into the one that plays when you are actually in space. The weird distorted sound at the start is actually just a piano sound with a load of different effects on it.
3. Open Space - This one plays while you're flying around in space, like an overworld theme. I'm really happy with the middle section with the cello and the cool bass synth. In my head I was picturing constellations and planets when I wrote the cello melody, lots of pretty formations of notes that don't really repeat to reflect the stars in the sky. I'm not completely satisfied with the second part, it's basically just a more upbeat version of the first part with different instruments and I don't think it sounds as good. I don't have time to make it better though so it'll have to do.
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
The theme is Freedom, so I themed my songs around a space exploration game, because flying through space is pretty freeing, and you are escaping the Earth in your rocket.
For some reason I had to tick the picture theme to be able to submit, I did not use this as inspiration.

'kay... That soundtrack definitely sounds like open space, heh.
Build Your Rocket - Bitcrash drums in the background? LOVE IT! A mix of groove and something ambient-atmospheric + fish screams..... miracle!
Blast-Off!!! - Uh... Uh. That sounds like, uh. well. it sounds like, uh.
KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
Open Space - Kaboom ended with a tune that's probably playing in BMO's head
Cool!
P.S. RAWR
Thank you!
I think you do a great job putting sounds in their own space. I feel like I'm in the middle of all the instruments, which is really cool. Open space was awesome, maybe making the cello slide in a more synthy way at some points could be cool here. Nice work!
Thank you! I've been working on my mixing so it's good to hear I have actually been improving.
Immaculate relaxing vibe in OPEN SPACE, stellar stuff!
Thanks!
this is a great submission! i love the atmosphere in these tracks especially in build your rocket! and that melody from the cello really hits the spot. i don't really have any critiques for this one, overall it's really good!
Thanks!
I really enjoyed the first track, the bass, the ambient sounds, the drums and the bitcrushed noise at the second half. It feels so dreamy. I really love the ambient tracks, it's very well mixed and filled with detail, like the wobbly synth in "Open Space". The second half is on par, maybe even better, the faint chords and the chiptuney lead is chef's kiss. Overall veery good.
Thank you!
you captured some EXCELLENT vibes in your tracks for this jam — "Build Your Rocket" has such a good rhythm to it, and "Open Space" feels so fitting for exploring the vacant cosmos... ^-^
personally, "Open Space" is fine the way you composed and arranged it. your videogame concept treats outer space as a liminal section, a transitional point between major events and locations that might occur; the subtle vibes that slowly evolve through the arrangement fit that very well!
Thank you! Yes, you're spot on with that idea for Open Space, if I had longer I would have done some themes for different planets. Glad you liked it :)
ough different planet themes would be hot, i love outer space games that involve traveling to various quirky exoplants, so games like Outer Wilds and Big Sky Trooper!
I cannot put to words how much Build Your Rocket puts me in this late 90s/early 00s headframe. It feels so perfectly befitting of that era of games, from the choice of instruments, the sound design and even down to the mixing itself. There's something immediately captivating about this track that just has me wanting to stay in this soundscape forever. Melodies and choice of voicings here are all fantastic, and various bits of ear candy throughout (the scratched vocal sample, intercom speech and various bit-crushing) add even more charm.
Blast Off is great, and perfectly befitting of the title. An intermediary piece to connect A to B and bring you on that journey. The gradual transition from all that noise to the ethereal chimes and expanse of space is really well done, transitioning rather nicely into..
Open Space - more of the same, in all honesty. It takes its time getting there, slowly introducing new instruments and melodies that twist and turn gorgeously, not bound by any particular rule. Getting to be suspended in this state for the first half of the track is clever, and then we get to really pass over into what almost feels like a credits sequence or cinematic long-shot of our character drifting off. Simple percussion, all kept very low-key and unobtrusive as though it is leaning into a little more of an 8-bit vibe at times, works well here. Adds just enough aural intrigue to keep things from dragging on too long.
This is some really good work, honestly. I am still absolutely enamoured with Build Your Rocket and how it effortlessly captures the vibe of sim-building and the era itself. Has me absolutely sold on the game and the soundtrack. Produced and mixed well throughout, and nice and varied to boot. Stellar work.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed listening to Build Your Rocket, I think I'll be doing more in this style in the future because I really enjoyed making it and it seems people are liking it.
I really like your OST because the game description you made could be about any other theme (like fear, suspense etc...), but your music is making it about freedom, really good job for that ! Even the second one, there is this "blast" a bit impressive and scary but replaced very fast by those lovely very light aerial melodies. Great OST :)
Thank you!
The Open Space song made me want to hop on my rocket and soar through the stars. Top quality, I loved everything about it. Keep it up!
Thanks!
Super well written! Great ambience, great vibes, I thought I was riding space mountain!
Thank you!
Love this, very atmospheric I feel like i'm exploring through space with some pals. Good work :)
Thanks!
What is that lead synth in Build Your Rocket? I love that sound.
I'm lovin the vibe you went for in these tracks oml.. especially the last two have that really nice sense of freedom to them with perfect going into to being in space vibes, and that last track is just amazing!
This OST could work so well in a nice and short artsy game for sure. You deserve way more ratings for sure
Well done, this overall sub is one of my favorites on here for sure. I kept saying "aw this is really nice" to my team mate while giving it a listen
Thank you so much!
I'm not sure which instrument you mean in Build Your Rocket. In the first half I've got a sine wave with some chorus on it going back and forth between the two speakers, then a piano part (the free Addictive Keys one) with some delay on it. Then in the second half I've got an electric piano (specifically the MkII3 Old Piano from the Ableton library) being played softly, with some chorus and delay on it. There's also the bit crushed noise through the second half, that's just another piano with the Redux effect (basically Ableton's bit crusher) on it. And all of these are filtered and compressed, and have had their "width" increased using Ableton's Utility effect (not sure exactly what this does but I like how it sounds).
Anyway not sure if this is helpful but I'm glad you and your team mate enjoyed listening to it :)
Love this! Very spacy (as you probably intended) :D
Thanks!
That's professional and quali!
Thank you!
Oh dang I absolutely adore the space garage vibes here, I could really listen to "Open Space" for hours. The theming is really consistent and cohesive throughout, but honestly I think the highlight for me was the ambient textures behind the breakbeats in Build Your Rocket that make it feel truly polished. Amazing work all around! (garage for garage is funny and I did laugh haha :))
Good that you noticed the background sounds, I've been putting them in most of the music I've been making recently so it's nice to hear it's paying off. Thanks for the feedback!
I enjoyed this a lot! Really great chill atmosphere, and I can definitely envision the game that would go with this soundtrack. My favorite is probably Build Your Rocket, I can see myself putting it on when I need to get some work done or just for a nice tune to listen to on the weekend!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Using space to fit the theming of freedom was a smart play IMO as it sets you apart. Gives a good location for the theme.
I lived the crunchy noises combined with the high quality voices. made it feel like a space game with outdated or improvised technology!
Blast off leading into open space was a great decision as it gives it a nice free flow feel. and open space itself is a great example of making ambiance work well with the theme because it has unique notes and interesting panning.
The second half of open space was a great addition as well not only to add style, but also gives the impression of a new biome or something adding to the exploration feel!
Thank you for the kind words here and on the Discord! Glad you like it!
