Description
This imaginary game's OST is composed of 3 tracks (around 8 minutes total) created during the jam's 48h. Everything has been made using Ableton Live 10 and different VST orchestral instruments (Kontakt, Spitfire BBC Symphonic Orchestra etc...) played with my piano keyboard.
Each one of the tracks explores a different approach of the theme "freedom". They were composed with a JRPG-type game in mind, keeping the tracks both engaging and dynamic.

"Unlocked" is the music of an imaginary cinematic at the beginning of the game where an innocent prisoner finally gains freedom. They've been captured years ago in cell in an unknown world. This music expresses the character's inner world, filled with sadness and emptiness: a result of being locked up for a very long time. As well as the fear of a false hope, and finally the realization of being outside again which is both exciting and strange. The end of the track expresses relief and serenity, feeling the sun and the wind on the skin again. The Picture Theme was the main inspiration on this one.

"Freefolks Village" could be the music theme of a village where peace is stable for a very long time and where food and water are abundant. This village is a place of freedom and unconcern. I’ve been inspired by some soundtracks like Sea Of Stars, Promenade or Tinykin. I wanted to compose something cute, almost Nintendo-ish, but keeping this JRPG village exploration tone.

Finally, "The World Ahead" is about the feeling of discovering the immensity of a world where everything is now possible. A mix between joy, excitement and power. It could be a specific end-game gameplay moment where the protagonist reaches their most powerful form and can move across the map quickly in order to make things right.

Message from the artist
Hi ! I'm a french composer, this is my first jam !
I hope you'll enjoy the different emotional states of my OST :)

Theme

Freedom
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
This OST fits the theme "Freedom" through different approaches. "Unlocked" fits the theme quite literally through this "prisoner finally going out" narrative, that was also inspired by the picture theme. "Freefolks Village" fits the theme through the peace and serenity of a place with no dangers nor limitations. "The World Ahead" fits the theme through the feeling of power and excitement in a big world where everything is possible. The whole OST fits the theme through the use of wind instruments, piano, high-tone violins and peaceful and/or melancholic melodies that gives a global feeling of serenity and possibilities.

"Unlocked" - perfect execution of the mood, it felt just like you have imagined. (I also like the wobbly brass sounds thrown in sparsely for some reason). The voice caught me off guard a little bit though, hahah, but it was kind of fitting, so cool.

"Freefolks Village" - once again, the feeling is nailed down. I would make the percussion a little bit quieter / in the back though (with reverb; It is great as it is, just a personal preference). Also, I would suggest adding a little bit more sections, to make the track more "dissolved". The ideas are great already, yet they felt like they wanted some more space. As for the general impression, the sound made me see that serene village, where grass is green and everyone is cheerful, hahha. Good job with this one.

"The World Ahead" - oh wowzers, this one is fun. I like the selection of chords, they are so dynamic and feel almost bursting with energy. My favourite track of yours. Yet again, the snares/hats are a bit "in the face". But the emotional landscape is amazing; saving this one to study to learn something new, lol. Wonderful.

Overall, yeah, good stuff. 9.9/10. Game-like, emotional, varied.

Wow thank you so much for the feedback and the improvements propositions !

"Unlocked" progresses well, and the soft piano ending was nicely done. "Freefolks Village" is cute, and definitely fits the vibe of a nonchalant jRPG village as you described. Love the piano melody for this one. If I could critique anything here, it would be that the initial few percussion notes felt a bit sudden or almost jarring - but I guess it just kind of caught me off-guard ahaha
Interesting bit of variety for the overall OST. There were some really cool creative choices here, like the guitar at the end of "The World Ahead" that certainly make your submission shine. Great work!

Really loved listening to this & I can tell you're very skilled at composition from this. Everything was going so well until I got to track 3, then it got even BETTER with that gorgeous guitar and was a megajam. Well done!

I love the composition in this submission! It tells a really great story without needing to read the description, and with the description its even better. The live piano playing is also a nice touch. It sounds good, and I'm sure is much more fun than editing MIDI notes from a piano sample to make them sound live lol. The string sample in Unlocked was a little jarring. Probably just needed a bit more reverb and brought down a little in the mix. Same thing for the percussion in Freefolks Village and The World Ahead. Overall a great submission!

I love Unlocked, especially the brass synth and the vocal sample, they remind me of Tears of the Kingdom and Ocarina of Time respectively which is good! I think all of the piano parts you played sound fantastic, they are really well composed. Great work overall!

Developer

Thank you for the nice feedback ☺️

I love basically everything about 'Unlocked' - it's just so great! If I had to find anything I didn't totally love about these tracks I'd point out the drums in 'Freefolks Village'. But overall this is a 9,8/10 submission!

Developer

Oh wow, thank you very much!!

Submitted(+1)

The flute is a bit too loud on the first track, the strings could be more vivid, they feel too robotic for me, but besides these it was still good. I like the nature of the second track, however sometimes the drums are a bit too jarring. Overall, the mixing and the instrument choices could be better (the drums on the final track), but the tracks convey well their emotions well and the soundtrack is well composed, en gros c'est pas mal du tout.

Thanks for your ideas of improvement! 🙂

As musician I can tell that it's a very Impressive mix for solo piano sound. Choosing other instruments can really enhance the piano's appeal too. Superb!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback ! Yes mixing solo piano is strangely a difficult thing to do :O

Very nice! Great melodies, well produced and well thought-out. I think you captured the vibe of a JRPG perfectly/

Freefolks Village is probably my favorite - it reminds me a lot of Breath of The Wild's village themes. The first and third are also really good though (I especially like the drums in the third)!

Thank you :D

Nice submission !

Each track has it's own identity, and yet everything stays very coherent in style and with the theme. There's some kind of simplicity that I really like, and I think it's well mixed too

I think Unlocked is my favorite, it would definitely fit so well in a JRPG, very emotional colors.

Freefolk village is also nice, more playfull and cheerfull, very pleasing to listen to.

And The World Ahead is a nice ending track, I like the epicness of it, and the guitar starting at 2:00 was surprising but a nice addition to make it even more tense.

Tes morceaux sont très agréables, merci pour ce voyage musical ! :D

Bien joué !

Unlocked has some really pretty piano playing in it. Really nice articulation on the keys to keep them feeling evocative. The bass growls softly whirring up and down as the half-way point comes is great - adds some movement in the lower end and contrasts with the piano (and later the strings and winds) really nicely. Speaking of said orchestral elements - they're really well done! They do an excellent job of bolstering the piano and providing some additional ear-candy to go along with it.

Freefolks Village is another example of fine playing. At times this actually reminded me of what I might hear in The Legend of Zelda. Something about the curious and bouncy piano offset by some quick string swells and playful mallet instruments. The simple percussion here is really clever - not only is it making great use of the stereo-field but it is just enough to add some rhythm to the track as a whole and non-traditional in order to keep it intriguing. This is probably my favorite of the three.

Finally, The World Ahead comes swinging in with a different vibe. It feels heroic, but also kind of daunting in a way. The world is a big place, and although this is a symbol of the freedom that one has to adventure on their own, there are always going to be challenges to overcome and threats to be wary of. This track does an excellent job of emphasizing that with a wonderful mix of instruments, and even some live guitar at the end! Kudos for that.

All in all this is pretty great - you've got some real chops when it comes to composing. I could easily imagine any and all of these tracks in a variety of games, fitting in well and providing some real treats for the ears. Best of luck!

"Freefolks Village" really hit the spot for me, it actually reminds me a lot of Drawn to Life! very lovely compositions over all, you have an amazing grasp at composition and arrangement. :D

"The World Ahead" was fun to listen to! the strings really made things exciting and worked well for the track! i think some additional stereo space for the various string sections would happen, and the drums are bit punchier and drier than i would've like for an orchestral piece.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your feedback, I'll keep the stereo aspect in mind and the punchier drum ;) and I will check Drawn to Life! because I don't know it :)

A pleasant listen! My favorite was Freefolks Village, reminds me of a mid-2000s MMORPG.

Overall I think some work could be done to make the instruments feel in the same "space". Like in Unlocked, the strings feel completely separated from the other instruments.

Good job!

Developer

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind!

Hi there! I love the piano playing that happens throughout the compositions and the project feels very pretty! I do wish that there was more incorporation of bass to help drive the compositions, but otherwise, it's a solid project!

Developer

Thank you ! I'll keep in mind the bass :)

everything you went for you nailed so well! amazing job on the theming here nice! the first song does really sound like menu/story setup scene. the second song sounded super Nintendo game village theme sounded very freedom-y!

amazing sub!!!

Developer

Thank you for listening :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

I think you did a really great job here. The big orchestra moments contrasted by the small piano sections works really well to make everything feel fresh. I guess that's where the metal background comes in! lol My favorite track is the second one because of the cool polyrhythms and the way the melody fits within all of that. Great job!

Developer

Thank you ! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂

First track was some great stuff, especially with the entry of the other voices. Second track felt like the introduction to a tropical island in a way lol. Overall great stuff.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your feedback 😀

Good stuff, really liked Unlocked a lot!

Like Starsicle already said, feels like you could've had a bit more reverb on the sounds as a whole to make them blend together, since as is they feel slightly separate from each other.

But still, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind next time :)

Great work!! Really enjoyed it!

I think theyre might be some spots that are hungry for a little bass maybe? Something to experiment with!

Bravo!

Developer

Thank you for your feedback !!

Yes I used to put too much bass before (and not necessarily well mixed ahah) so I am a bit shy with it now 😁 I'll try to experiment 😉
