Description
This is the soundtrack for an exploration-focused game where you play as a whale, explore the ocean, and set various sea animals free from captivity.

It is mostly orchestral in style, using a combination of instrumental VSTs, as well as some synths and samples.

I used Ableton Live as my DAW, with sketches made using Sibelius and some sounds produced with Max MSP.

Theme

Freedom

How does it fit the theme?
The concept of the game is to evoke the freedom of a sea animal to explore the ocean and go wherever they please, with the music being written to evoke that

And now, children, it's time to tell you a mind-blowing story about a whale...
Cute composition!

I would love a game where I just roamed around the ocean as a whale, fighting crime, doing whale things, etc.

Lovely orchestration and layering, especially on Apres Midi D'un Crabe. I am not sure what that translates to in english, but I am choosing to to read it as "Crabs in MIDI." I like crabs in MIDI.

i really enjoyed "Après Midi D'un Crabe", i am imagining a smol crab out on a post-lunch walk down the street. :~)

in all seriousness, nice work!! these are very nice for underwater themes that i feel i don't hear much of in regards to instrumentation and production style (which may be because i'm used to retro videogames and their soundchip restrictions). i feel like i can also imagine these working quite well in nature documentaries, actually!

So much going on, so subtle and quiet, your mixing is brilliant!!

Absolutely love how spacious this all sounds, absolutely phenomenal mixing. The swelling and floaty chord choices in Cetacean Kingdom give me huge Hyper Light Drifter vibes (top 2 game of all time imo) and works perfectly for the overwhelmingly vast and mysterious nature of the ocean. Après Midi D'un Crabe progresses on this vibe very well and still manages to keep the mysteriousness of the ocean while keeping a whimsical playfulness to it. Amazing work!

Amazing, I love that way you design the sound! It created vibes very natural and also emotion :)

Cetacean Kingdom leans on the "less is more" mantra and I really dig that. There are a lot of subtle elements coming and going, never fighting for the spotlight. At the same time, the piece continues to progress at its own pace and still feel progressive enough - at no point was I bored or expecting something more. Keeping things in this register for almost 2 minutes isn't easy, so I commend you for that.

Après Midi D'un Crabe occupies some of the same space, but is notably busier off the bat. Really love how much work the bass is doing in this to establish the rhythm and let the other instruments bounce and weave their way through. Use of subtle synths here does wonders for adding more to the aural palate, too. Memorable melodies and a rather cool progression.

Mixed and produced well across the board. Probably the "quietest" orchestral tracks I've heard in this jam, but that is not to their detriment. They set out what they need to do and do it well. Great work, and best of luck!

Nice work, the second tune in particular is reallllly good! Nice woodwind counterpoint work in there. Bravo!

i really like the second song, like a lot in this. its super interesting. I think the first track is honestly a little weak compared to the 2nd one just because the 2nd track is so much more interesting sounding

This may seem strange but a lot of the time tracks can feel like music for games, but your two tracks feel like music that is actually in a video game. Whether its the orchestral tones that set the waterscape and under-the-sea ambience, or the curious characterisation of an unpredictable setting in Apres midi, it just feels very alive. Really just a fantastic submission - loved listening!

Very nice orchestral colors, you managed to really create a deep sea ambience that is charming

Favorite of mine is definitely Après midi d'un crabe, the orchestration on this one is awesome, little touches here and there that made a very coherent mood and groove.

Bien joué ! :D

loving the way you used the orchestra to convey the deep sea! the first track is very reminiscent of feeling like you're aimlessly wandering around underwater, and i like how the second track kicked this up a notch with the other instruments joining in. it creates this feeling of tension mixed with curiosity as the whale runs (or swims, hah) around and meet new sea creatures to set free. especially love the short oboe sequence in the second track!

lovely submission!! i feel like it could benefit even more if the project had more than two tracks as i got pretty invested by the second track, but i had a great time listening nonetheless :)))

It's a great idea to have thought about an underwater setting, it's a creative way to express freedom. the second one is my favorite. I made me curious to have a look at what the game could be :D

The strange timings you used really sell the freedom and isolation of the deep ocean which is nice.

I also like that you didn't just make it "water" but focused on orchestration to get the water feel across anyway

The second track was more defined which is great for variety and with the unique 7/8 time signature still making it off kilter to be cohesive with the other song!

Really amazing. Loved both textures and choice of the instruments. Both tracks feel very “watery”. “Cetacean Kingdom” lacked a bit of direction imo, I couldn’t feel where the track was going, but it still was a pleasure to listen to!

Very well written overall!

I feel like 'Après Midi D'un Crabe' could fit perfectly in a game, it's very fun and groovy! And I love the texture of 'Cetacean Kingdom', it gives some exploration vibes.

Great work!

I really your submission, it definitely evokes that feeling of being a whale exploring the depths of the sea freely. It also kinda gives vague terraria vibes too :)
