Theme

How does it fit the theme?
The plot and each level is explained on the OST page! Long story short, you play an ex-hacker who developed a phone application for the government to enslave people. Guilt was stronger and you decided to do a 180 and try to destroy your own creation in a 2D dystopian platformer.

So much effort here, truly impressive in that alone! Another great chiptune submission from you overall. "Dystopia" was quite unsettling (in a good way) and me feel... idk, wobbly? Have I become a victim of the mass lobotomy machine? Did I contribute to the smell of blood in the atmosphere???
Actually unreal amounts of effort put in for this one, for the music and the actual game concept. Unbelievable work!
Damn this must have been quite the undertaking, but it paid off. Incredibly authentic sounding piece.
Exile is great. Some tension woven into those melodies and a lot of panning to really keep the listener immersed in the virtual space. I love how the voicings grow almost creepier and more oppressive as the piece progresses.
False Piece is deliciously ominous off the bat. Nice percussion here to provide a rhythm to work with and the continued layering of elements as it draws on is well done.
Dystopia kicks off with some great PWM and pitch modulation to really establish this as a dramatic track. It kind of reminds me of some of the themes you'd hear beneath the Rocket Hideout in the early Pokemon games - unnerving in every sense of the word.
Underground feels like much more of a pensive piece, though I suppose anything coming off of Dystopia would result in that same feeling. This has a quiet determination to it with some fantastic little bits of ear-candy to keep the piece interesting.
No Tears has a great progression, and actually loosely reminds me of something Jake Kaufmann would do in the darker levels of Shovel Knight (or perhaps Plague Knight). Really nice use of panning here on the supporting waves in the back.
Finally, Free At Last rounding things out does a good job. There are some more hopeful melodies here and a more definitive sense of driving forward toward that freedom. I love the trading off of the voicings doing the one melody being hard panned - clever use of stereo-space and harmonic trade-off.
This was great, and very unique. Goes without saying that I could imagine this slotting into any kind of game on the Gameboy for.. obvious reasons, lmao. Works really well. Good job!
Cute, cool, detailed and CHIPTUNE I LOVE CHIPTUNE! WAH!
Good job :>
P.S. RawrMaking music this good on an an actual gameboy sounds incredibly time consuming and is honestly incredible. I'm not familiar with the limitations of the medium so it's hard for me to comment on anything specifically, but the consistent hard panned synths do a really great job of filling out the stereo field and making everything feel spacious. Each track is catchy in its own way, personal favorite has got to be Dystopia with its gritty sounds and minor melody. I did feel some songs could have more movement in the bass notes to keep the song moving forward like in Exile where it hovers around the same general notes for a long time. Really fascinating stuff though!
Really dig this work, some cool panning stuff, great old school chiptune vibes! Reminds me of "The Messenger"
The chiptune style is really cool here, i do like the chromati-ness of the songs here as mentioned below.
the one thing that stands out to me is the somewhat chromatic nature thanks to the slide notes and pitch bends craftily used throughout your soundtrack... i love it! you definitely know what you're working with, using the program (soundchip? DAW? i'm not sure what the right term would be) effectively to convey different atmospheres and scenarios in the entire collection. more traditional chiptune is out of my scope of knowledge, so i wouldn't be able to provide feedback on anything. :3c
i really enjoyed "Underground", as it has an evolving intensity throughout. i was initially ready to relax for a bit before it started picking up, which was a pleasant surprise! overall, magnificent work!
(no surprise that you don't like mainstream services since you use linux (don't worry I use linux too (even if I use Windows when I make music because making music on linux is a hellhole)))
The first track dragged on for too long honestly, it could be cut down to half it's time. I liked Dystopia's bass, but there are also some parts where it's a bit too abrasive for me. I liked the panning on "Underground". Still, the soundtrack is quite original since it's "real" chiptune, which is nice.
Really impressive stuff, I can tell you're pushing the limits of the Gameboy sound chip here. The tracks have a great oppressive atmosphere, they fit the detailed description of the game really well. Although the songs sound fantastic as they are, I would love to hear the original recordings without any extra processing!
This is an idea! I still have the "brut" tracks on the laptop, this is possible I'll post them after the jam ;)
The chiptune is very well made with its unique percussion and fun warbling every now and then!
I think some more variance in volumes would be good to make parts stand out more since everything is a pretty stagnant volume but that also fits the NES kind of vibe.
It's awesome that you made it all on hardware. And the end product sounds great!
My one suggestion is to have more defined climaxes for each track. More instruments are added over time in each track, but I think having a melodic/harmonic climax as well would help a lot. Good job!
Impressionant en 48h. Amazing submission nothing else to add really!
Doing this in a tracker is either crazy or really smart I haven't decided haha
But the result is great (!!) so who cares :p
Well done :)
Glad you liked it! I almost fell sick afterwards XD
I make music with trackers sometimes (OpenMPT, FamiTracker), it's not that hard when you realise that at its core it's basically a vertical piano roll. I never used LSDJ though, that's on a different level.
