Description
I decided to go with a Locked-Room style puzzle game to fit the theme of freedom. In The Grandiose Tale of Perigreen Manor, you'd play as a young lady who received a cryptic invite to the infamous Perigreen Manor. Once inside, you'd find yourself trapped, with nothing but your sharp wits, scathing sarcasm, and the Perigreen's pet bird and companion, Crow. Solving each room's puzzles would allow you to progress further into the manor, all the while a larger mystery unfolds. What secrets does the Perigreen family hide, and will you make it out the manor alive?
I wanted to go for something a little different than the immediate thought of "grand victory" or "defying all odds" when it comes to the theme. I wanted to take the theme a little more casually than that, and write an OST that reflects the quirkiness of the manor, the confidence of the protagonist, and the resolution of the overarching mystery in the game as you beat all the puzzles and finally gain freedom.
The Title Theme is a medley of the main melodies from the other tracks which I visualise as playing on the Start screen as you set up your game profile.
The Grand Lobby would play during the in-between moments between each puzzle room. Here you'd spend time conversing with Crow and mulling over clues.
The Puzzle Theme is for the puzzle/escape rooms. I wanted something pleasant and not too distracting, but still fun to listen to for when you get stuck on a difficult puzzle with the music looping.
Memories, Freedom, and Realisation would play at the end - you're about to escape, and you've finally put together the pieces of the Perigreen family's tragic secret. You say goodbye to Crow, and escape into the morning light.
Composed using Cubase Elements 8, and most of the VSTs are from free libraries provided by LABS. I first try to picture where the track would play, then work on carving out a feel for the song - choosing instruments, melodies, or a certain key that fit my "picture", the work on fleshing out from there. For example, I could visualise the lobby of the manor with a twin staircase going up to the second floor, with a lot of wood and red colours. Chronological order of completion was: Grand Lobby, Memories, Puzzle Theme, Title Theme.
Message from the artist
This is my first OST jam, thank you for hosting!
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
Literally, through the use of the escape rooms and puzzle genre, and metaphorically through learning the secret of the the manor and helping your new friend Crow move on into the afterlife.

Wow! I love how your create 'Just the right amount of mystery' vibe in every track. Your style are remarkable. Cheer!
Title Theme - YAY! BASS! Despite the relatively calm main melody, this bass along with the hi-hat makes me shake my head.
Grand Lobby - Grand piano in the grand lobby... And grand bass... Grand headphones on the grand site itch.io...
Puzzle Theme - This track makes me cry and remembers my favorite Slime Rancher...
Memories, Freedom, and Realisation - Same as the third track, but more dynamic...
Good job! I liked it :>
P.S. Rawr!
Memories, Freedom, and Realization really tugged on my emotions so deeply. It feels so reminiscent and heavy yet hopeful. Out of all the tracks I've listened to, I've gotta say this track matches the Freedom theme vibe I got from this jam. You need to go compose something for Kingdom of Hearts genuinely! The title theme was also a fun one, and the instrument choice was solid all around!
The Title Theme has very interesting progressions and definitely piqued my interest early on! The piano lead fits the description of your game perfectly and sets the tone nicely for the rest of the game. Grand Lobby does a great job of conveying just a little bit of weight or consequence to the story while still keeping things light and mischievous. In "Puzzle Theme", I personally would have put the strings that come in around 1:25 a bit more forward, but that's just my taste. Things pick up nicely at around 1:49, where I was starting to feel the song was a bit too soft right before that. "Memories Freedom and Realisation" brings a bit of welcome variety into the fold with the saxophone, but I feel the song kind of ends before it really gets a solid resolution. Regardless, what's there is great, and if anything just left me wanting more.
Fantastic submission overall, 8 and a half minutes of enjoyable music in 48 hours is a stellar accomplishment; and your first jam submission at that! Excellent work!
Nice chill tunes to solve puzzles with! The 2nd track had some tango/Piazzolla feeling moments which I really enjoyed.
This album almost feels as if it's drawn, super cool stuff. The puzzle theme is definitely my favorite, and I think it would have been cool if you had explored a quieter and more relaxed soundscape, but what you have still works tremendously. Good work.
This piece reminds me of a single, carefully cultivated rose blooming with quiet dignity in the wild. It carries a classical elegance, with a refined structure and a melodic core full of poise and grace. ->I mean No4 your submitted
This is such a lovely thing to say, thank you ;_;
Really nice work! Great little melodies you've written here! Nice chord progressions, and everything interacts well together! I think if you added a little depth via countermelodies, etc, i think that could go a long way!
Great job!
You really took me for a walk with this one. Great piano composition! "Grand Lobby" made me think of "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; I think it might be one of your refrains; that actually pairs well with the kind of story you've got there.
I love the concept and your approach towards the theme, quite original ! It works pretty well. I really feel the manor vibe with those Cellos. Almost halloweenish, yet very casual and detective-like, perfect to take time to think while being immersed in the setting. Great job, I like it !
Oh shoot all of these melodies are delicious. All the instrumentation as well as the great use of interesting chord progressions perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a somber mystery. It's quiet and out of the way, but each song manages to be very memorable with all the leitmotifs used which is, again, perfect for this type of game and a real challenge to do. Amazing work!
ough, a good portion of your soundtrack reminded me of the Professor Layton series and Tangle Tower; i'm a BIG fan of puzzle games especially, so this was a treat to listen to!! my favorite has to be "Grand Lobby" — that and the title theme make for a great first impression if you were to enter this videogame's world... ^-^
your overall instrumental palette and melodies were amazing! i'd love to hear more experimentation with note velocities, tempo changes, and panning since that can add a realistic touch to live instrumentation
I think you nailed what you were trying to go for! i totally see this being an escape the manor thing. the soundtrack is composed very well and feels mysterious and quirky like you were going for. good job!
The soundtrack as a whole was very manor-like, so it fit well with your game idea! The sprinkling of modal tonality was a nice touch (god I sound like a nerd). A very relaxing listen overall, I would definitely play this game. I think the one thing I might consider is swapping out the muted trumpet in Memories, Freedom, and Realization with a softer brass sound like a solo French Horn or Euphonium--I think it would fit into the track's softer sound a little better. Nice work!
The Title Theme is both catchy and somehow understated, which feels paradoxical but it just works so well. It's perfect underscore for just navigating a menu or getting yourself ready to play a game. The piano stands out for obvious reasons, but I want to shout out the bass work below it - a lot of really nice movement to keep the lower-end spiced up.
Grand Lobby has that prissy regality to it. There's just enough tension woven in there to have it stand out and not fall too deep into archetypes, particularly around the half-way point. Gotta say the piano in this is really nice; great use of dynamics and articulative playing.
The Puzzle Theme has a gorgeous waltz timing to it. Varying the choice of instrumentation here is brilliant because the piano tends to hit that sweet-spot when it comes as a result of it. I feel like the melody wouldn't have popped so much had the track opened with it, but that slight offset was just enough to cleanse the palate. This one may be my favorite of the bunch solely for how evocative it feels.
Finally, Memories, Freedom and Realization errs more in a quieter, more pensive direction. The orchestration here is really nice and has that gentle quality that can be hard to wrangle at times. Layered beautifully and seamlessly washing in and out as the lead melodies do their thing.
Fantastic work - I think a lot of us could learn from your approach to classical writing here. Production was great throughout, too. Best of luck!
Great work! This was my first music jam and I did afterlife theme mixed in like you. Great experience, I could picture the game very vividly.
Wow, Amazing work. It gave me heavy hat in time vibes with the manor.
Really enjoyed this one! I loved the contemplative feel of these tracks, perfectly fits the puzzle game theme. Really great job combining that spooky haunted house feel with the quiet, meditative vibe of puzzle solving! The smaller ensemble size gave your soundtrack an intimate feel to the whole piece. Great work!
so much character in this one! the old family mystery vibe is really well-preserved throughout the four tracks as well.
Love your unique spin on the theme and great execution!
