Congratulations on your results! I didn't have enough time to write a detailed comment, but I did leave a rating some days ago.

Lots of creative enemy designs as always - gameplay progression felt a bit slow to me, but discovering the new enemy types was fun, and the screen-eating effect reminded me of a very old screensaver or joke program which I can't recall what its name was... Only real complaint is that the permanently obscured spots prevented me from looking at some enemy designs. It's nice that you had an option to toggle them off, though I still kept them on. Overall I had lots of pleasant vibes for the old internet/shareware era, it was a really neat experience in that regard. Congrats again!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, I'm happy you enjoyed it. Sorry you wanted to see the enemies and couldn't, and cheers for keeping your nerves and keeping them on anyway.

I agree about the progression, enemies should have lower health, and maybe weapon progression should be partially permanent, so that more (and more) things can happen on the screen at the same time especially before each boss fight.

I love how trippy the virus effects are; the effects make it look like the screen is burning from the inside-out. These effects add an extra layer of challenge to the game, and it was fun trying to make sure the virus doesn’t get too out of control. As far as the gameplay goes, it feels just right, especially since the player ship has a smaller hitbox.

Developer

Thanks a lot, I'm very happy you like it.

It feels really good !

Graphically pleasing, the bullets are really nice looking and legible, the ratio between the collision mask of the player and its sprite is good, making for a very pleasing gameplay.

I did like the virus mechanic, but I could not find a way to reset the white area, which is quite a shame gameplay wise ?

Very good, I am curious with language/engine was used?

Developer

Thanks a lot, I'm happy you like. It's all made with base JAVA (8), and yes once the area got white then you can't get it back anymore (bombs can help a bit to stop the spreading before it happens as they clear the red part at least).

Excellent game and take on the theme; I loved the variety of of enemy attacks and the virus mechanic was really interesting! I beat all 3 bosses! :P

Developer

Thanks a lot, congratulations for beating the game and I'm very happy you like it!

On my first run I had no idea what to do. I didn't know you could shoot and I just let the virus thing take up 90% of my screen because though it would just go away. Then I found the tutorial... I think I must have skipped it some how.

Anyways, the difficulty was just right. I like the virus mini game where you have to shoot all of it before it spreads. The control scheme is pretty bad. There is no comfortable button to shoot when using wasd. I used arrow keys, z and space in the end. I didn't use the movement slow button because it's too far away, but it's a nice feature to have. An auto fire for single player would be nice instead of perma holding the fire button. Some UI problems already mentioned in previous comments making it unreadable. The bombs are kind of overpowered, destroying all projectiles, enemies and viruses. Overall, it was very fun!

Developer

Thanks a lot, I'm happy you enjoyed it despite the controls, next time I'll add autofire as an option.

What a fun and reassuring thing to see the second I open a download-only game!

But seriously, this is incredible overall. The style is great, and it's a really unique adaptation of the theme (a lot of people did viruses, but this is the first game I've seen that overlays that concept on an otherwise normal game instead of building a game around it entirely, and it works very well).

Some of the sound effects could be a bit harsh though, and I wish I had a way to just turn that down instead of off entirely.

Developer(+1)

Haha, yes, in the beginning of the jam the page of the game was quarantined so it was unintentionally even funnier, even if I certainly prefer that it's not anymore. Unfortunately I'm sorry to say you can't apply the mode to other games.

The sound effects should definitely be both adjustable and lower by default compared with the music.

Thanks a lot, I'm happy you like the game and especially the viruses.

I like the unique retro style!

The gameplay is generally fun, though it has some UX issues. For example, the virus covers the UI by default, even in the tutorial, so I cannot see the pause menu when I want to change the settings. There is also no toggle to shoot backwards, so I cannot fight back against the virus spreading on the left. I also have -1 health after completing the game, for some reason.

The non-straight bullets are also a bit annoying to dodge, as I kept running into bullets that decelerate faster than expected. Same for the sine wave bullets at the ending boss fight. The sprites are very neat-looking, though the animated bullet sprites make their outlines unclear.

Overall, I enjoyed it!

Edit: Forgot to mention that the tutorial text disappears too quickly. Maybe stop spawning the next enemies until the user presses Enter or something.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, I'm very happy you enjoyed it.

It's all great feedback and I agree with everything, the tutorial could indeed be a ton friendlier.

The -1 health is sort of intended as the game turns your remaining lives into points and then kills you because I've not put an alternative way to end a game ;) . Also I think that technically no bullet decelerates but if they appear to to you then there's certainly something I could do better.

Congratulations for completing the game!

I absolutely love the concept that the game itself is unstable! The virus mechanic was a little bit difficult because you had to get rid of every last pixel of red but it wasn't unfair and was still fun! Great job :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, I'm happy you like it. I definitely could have tuned down the difficulty to deal with viruses, at least as a separate difficulty option.

Very cool game. Great ideas implemented masterfully!

Completed this game with just 1 life remaining :)
There's a whole abundance of enemy types with different behavior and shot patterns. The difficulty ramps up in just the right progression, and final boss was hectic and fun, with its own interchanging patterns and corruption plopping in here and there throughout the battle.
Sprites are exceptionally cute and look very cohesive.
Thank you for making the game!

Thanks a lot, I'm very happy you like it and got to see the final boss. Congratulations for completing the game!

Ok this is like multiple layers of good. The base game feels really good to play and is fun and difficult (but not impossible). AND THEN there's the red spread of dread covering my screen and the popups and then before I knew what was happening WHAM there's a bigass submarine and bullets coming from I don't know where because 2 thirds of my screen is white. Also the soundtrack slaps.

Developer

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you like it. I'm specially happy you mention the music as it's the one part where I have no idea of what I'm doing but I enjoy doing it.

I am slow reader so it was hard for me to go through tutorial. I like the game though, the idea of virus enemy variations. Respect for underwater theme

Developer

Yes, the text mostly describes what's currently happening with the viruses attacking the screen so you probably didn't miss anything important.

Thanks a lot for playing, I'm happy you like the game, underwater themes are the best.

Great game, I got a score of 29983. I really like the gameplay and how the virus doesnt hurt you directly but is still dangerous, and that you have to change your focus from enemies to the virus.  The visuals and audio are really nice. Very cool game :3

Developer

Thanks, I'm happy you like it.
