Cool game, the shrink mechanic was good fun, and of course necessary to navigate the levels :)
Cute game! Not sure if intentional, but the main mechanic seems like a reference to Exploding Kittens, hahah!
Good job getting this done for the JAM :D!
It's a cute and fun game. The gimmick of shrinking and passing through the passage is interesting. However, the sound of enemy attacks ringing out forever is crazy my ears.
I ended getting slammed with work, so I wasn't able to do a video review like I promised, but I did wanna still give a good review.
Player controller was good, and the ability to let go of a jump's height early is nice. To further improve the feel of your character I would implement a jump buffer, to make the jumps feel more responsive.
Look into Area of effects for audio. Simplest way to handle it for the scope of your game, would be an area around the player that checks for enemies. If they're within that area, activate them. This will prevent the enemies from infinitely firing off bullets from accross the map. You can also do it the other way around, and have the enemies have their own AOE that activates them when a player is detected within it. Either is valid. Weigh your options. With simple level designs, neither should be too performance heavy. But either solution would be better than it is now.
Also visually making sure the player knows all the dangers is important when possible. As the pit at the bottom of level 2 was not clear enough to be a pit immediately. Maybe add water, since it's a cat, and it has a flaming tail, it would be both thematically, and visually appropriate. Even something as simple as a "fading black pit", or some spikes would suffice.
Lastly on subject of pits, and player overall. I would like to touch on camera movement. Maybe have a camera pan down if down held, up if up held. Especially since you're going to be using vertical level design. You can also make sure the camera follows the player more closely. There are many simple tricks to make the camera do this. You can have the move-speed of the camera following the player tied into the vertical velocity. So falling faster = pan-faster. This would prevent the player from ever falling faster than the camera, and "reaching the bottom of it"; Otherwise it's very hard to tell what's below you when blindly jumping down. Both of these two solutions can mostly address unfair vertical design for the player.
One of the best features and designs of the game was the use of "big cat/small cat". Where the small cat is affected by fans, but can enter small areas. I would definitely lean into that as the identity of the game and focus most of the features around that concept.
Some flair you can add to a future build would making the cooldown timer to be visually shown on the cat. Such as; The tail growing back over the 3 seconds and disappearing when it's not usable. Or have it be less natural and just do a simple bar near the player itself. Since the game is a bullet hell, there's very little time to actually look away from the player up into the top left. So incorporating information into the center near player is a neat trick to address that! :D
Overall a solid 3/5. You definitely have some good ideas here worth expanding on!
its pretty fun! i like when we have to explode cat for tiny path. Good job!
The whole gameplay mechanic is great, fun, addictive, fast paced in a good way, music is cool, not a fan of the AI generated assets but some effort was made so its worth playing for sure, the SFX though that almost drove me mad haha, its waaaay to high but apart from that a nice game, try maybe next time Collab with an artist on discord ;)
Thanks for the awesome feedback!! Glad you like the game. The plan is definitely to collaborate with an artist next time. This was my first jam ever, so I wasn’t sure how to find someone to work with, and I ended up using AI, but still I kept AI involvement to a minimum, just to ensure I could deliver on time. I also edited the generated artwork and animated the protagonist myself (hope that helps!) But yeah, having some artist friends would be great.
The idea and the gameplay is cool and interesting. The tutorial part and the overall progression is well done and allows the player to grasp how to master the core game mechanic. As a player I would expect to destroy the bullet spawners exploding nearby them, but it would reduce the overall game difficulty and I agree with your choice. The sound increasing the speed or the picth the lower the health is in line with the comic game style and I appreciated it a lot. Great work guys ^^
I really like the core mechanic and it's a good use of difficulty scaling to teach people how to play.
Cool game great movement nice art.
very cute game and pretty fun!
very cute game and pretty fun!
Very fluid animations on the character. Exploding feels very fun to do :D Good work. My only complaint is some of the SFX being too loud, but otherwise, great job!
Fun little puzzle platformer :D
I like how you’ve combined unique platform abilities with the bullet hell patterns of the turret enemies, and the puzzle element is really well implemented to where the player has to understand when to use each ability in which situation.
Also really like Nekaboom’s design, it’s so clever to have made it round and have a little spark on the tail to evoke a classic cartoon bomb XD
Music track is also cool, too bad about the sound issue for now :( cause you weren’t kidding the sfx are LOUD O_o
Oh well jam shenanigans and all :p but overall fun and well made entry despite this small issue.
Woah, thanks for the awesome comment!! I am really glad you enjoyed the game.
Great game! I liked the explosion mechanic and the controls were also quite good. The shooting sfx was very loud, causing me to need to stop before completing the game so that I could save my eardrums, but otherwise it was very fun. Nice work!
I'm sorry about the SFX issue, it's a shame it kept you from completing the game. Still, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed what you played!
I completed the 3 levels, had fun!
The game controls perfectly, the explosion mechanic is thrilling and the levels make good use of it. The game going faster (including the music, of course) as you die is cool too.
Thanks for the nice words, glad you like it!
The sounds are a little annoying, but apart from that the game is nice
Thanks! Your game is nice too, I really like the art style
It's okay, but I don't see an unstable
I couldn't play this for very long as the bullet noises were destroying my ears! Hopefully that is an easy fix. Overall this looks like a fun concept and I would play more if the sound issue was resolved :) Very on theme!
The sound issue is sad T_T, I was in such a hurry to upload the build before the end of the jam that I forgot to adjust it and now it's too late, But I'm glad you were still able to enjoy it
