Had a great time with this. The kingdom is littered with the fallen bodies of my sacrifices :) Visuals are very charming and well done with the a capella wildcard -perfect execution of that!

Loved the random names too :) The rolling screen with all your fallen zeroes is a nice touch - I think it would be awesome if that scrolled at the end after you successfully conquor a castle.

Great job dev :)

Developer(+1)

Why haven't I thought of that... That's a great idea for an end screen, TY!

Very cool entry, I loved the a capella music! I was singing along while playing. The art style is great, especially the characters (did you design them for the jam or are they part of the assets?). This is a really chill, funny experience. Between the great names (need that silly name wildcard again!) and the hilarious deaths, I was laughing quite a bit. RIP to all the countless travelers who I sent to their death. Well done!

Developer(+1)

All map assets are free to use assets I got around but only %5 of the heroes were premade (calciumtrice) I've made 114 variations in total. Though I had done it before the jam, not during it. (I was working full time :P)

Awesome, the heroes look great!

Fun little game! I liked the pixel art for the items, great job on that. I'm decent at pixel art but this is on another level! I found it funny that these incompetent adventurers were sent to their deaths. Great sounds too!

Developer

Thank you so much!

I feel so bad sending so many adventurers to their deaths, but it was all for the greater good in the end. Really cool concept!

  • (+) Nice distribution of stats. I liked that all items had a positive and a negative, and that I had to match it to the random stats each adventurer had.
  • (+) I like the artstyle a lot, I was afraid it would a bit hard to read and see well, but it turned out fine!
  • (-) I didn’t really feel like I had any control over if an adventurer succeeded or not. Of course the more items they had the better, but it felt very random when they died. I didn’t know what stat was lacking.

Good job!

Developer(+1)

Ty for the detailed feedback :)

Yeah, the expedition fail UI should have been clearer. That popped up a few times in the comment section here. Nothing was random (aside from dice rolls ofc) but people felt they didn't have control so that turned out to feel chaotic.

Submitted

This was neat! The random names and characters designs were fun, as well as the audio. Nice execution of the A Capella wildcard!

It got a little frustrating at times because of how random it was, but I ultimately just sent a bunch of people to their death until I had like 10,000 gold and then spent all of it on the next person, ha ha. It took some thought not too be too wasteful, but still didn’t really feel earned if that makes sense.

Still had fun with it though. Nice job!

Developer

Yeah that is one issue that popped up mostly. The expedition part is too fast and info is not exactly clear. All dice rolls and challenge checks are under the hood so the result seems random (it actually is not). I should have made the expeditions clearer, at least add in the math behind the fail reason and check vs difficulty class

Submitted

Gotcha. Yeah, I think seeing something after the cause of death like:

Speed check: 7 (Stat) + 6 (Roll) < 15 (Target)

Would help make it more clear how much luck or bad stats or whatever else was the cause.

Still, for a game jam this was pretty solid!

Fun game! I managed to win! Acapella was great too!

Some feedback:

  • I found an infinite money glitch: you can send seemingly infinite number of heroes with no items to just win some money for free. I saved about 8000 gold that way and then just made one overpowered hero.
  • I'd slow down the things that happen during the expedition: currently the event happen so fast I couldn't read them so I kinda missed half of the fun.
  • Instead of making all the checks automatically, you could give the player an option to roll the dice manually and maybe even select between different events from time to time (so the player can choose between less risky or more rewarding action)
Developer(+1)

Ty for the detailed feedback!

- Infinite money glitch is not a glitch but an intended feature. I also wrote it on the tips as sending few heroes without items is a quick way to earn some cash :)
- I kept it intentionally fast because expedition part is outplayed. Didn't want to make it too long but maybe just a tad bit slower could have been better as you said.
- That would be how I would enhance the game but I wanted to keep it shorter and don't over commit. I got burned from scope creep multiple times and I was working fulltime during the jam week.

Very fun game! First I was reading things and trying to understand how to play and max the stats… but then I realised that just clicking ‘start’ again and again without buying items is already a profitable strategy.

Developer

Profitable and viable :) I even wrote that in the tips because that's the quicker and the "are we the baddies" wildcard way :P

Hey, just played your game cause of your comment at our game to it being similar and I really liked your execution. Music is one of the best in the jam with the a-capella wildcard so far in my opinion. I also grinded so long, that I could achieve >100 luck just to see what happens, and it was totally successful :-D

Great Game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing :D Fun fact, cheating to set stats to 100 was how I tested if the end state was working properly :P

Submitted

Amazing idea and the art and music were top notch.  I spent some time building up a huge cash pool, just to build out a super statted adventurer, just to have them die at about 20%, but so is life. Thanks for the great entry.

Developer(+1)

All RNG in the game is dependent on stat checks, you probably had a weakness somewhere and wheel of fate decided to ask you about that stat :P

Submitted

Cool game and clever use of the wildcards! I could stock a petting zoo with how many of my dudes got morphed into sheep! The a cappella tunes were hilarious,. They maybe even could have used a couple other noises layered in to really heighten the melody

Developer

It was a first time recording sound stuff so didn't go too wild. Dice roll sound is actual D20's rolling too :P

I WAS 88% IN WHEN I DIED TO A PIGION (i assume its a mutant pigeon)

Hilarious game. Quotable quotes include "I achieve things, I'm an achiever". Stayed on for as long as I could to read as many random name combinations as I could.

I do wish the combat phase was a bit slower so i could properly read all the stat check lines. They look fun too!

Developer

The quotes are mostly from guild wars 2, and the name generator should have 1600 variations.

Also multiple mutant pigeons I assume :P

Game was extremely fun. I'm guessing the helm of Umbra was an oblivion reference?

Developer

Unintentional reference but I like it :P Umbra is a common name in fantasy settings that has shadowy connections. (part of the wildcard charm)

The mental image of a hero i just dropped 3k on, dying at 0% because he was bucked off his own horse is just *chefs kiss* .

I really loved all the fun little dialogue these little gremlins said when they were sent off, very on the theme of selfish idiots vying for glory.

Developer

Uff, seems to be the case of a serious case of bad luck. Maybe not as per the stat itself but through the will of the dice gods themselves. :)

Submitted

The pain of wasting away 8k gold on an adventurer only for them to die from bee stings 14% of the way!
Loved the variety in ways your adventurers could fail their journey to the castle!
The sound effects were also quite neat,

Developer

Let's just say Ignoring a few stats can have unforeseen consequences. (hehe I made a half-life pun)

Submitted (1 edit)

sound effects are awsome man good job but i was failing hard in the first few expeditions lol :D

Developer

Yeah first few expeditions are the most brutal, total uncharted territory :P

Submitted

I liked the concept!  I beat it by banking 10k by sending sacrificial zeroes, then I kept rerolling and only picking items where the negative points were in perception (since it cant go below 1), then carefully built perception back up to have a well-rounded hero.  I think the RNG was a bit brutal, my carefully-equipped hero that cost 5k in items made it about as far as a hero being sent out with no items, which was disheartening.  I did lol when one of my heros died at 0%, swept away by a river!

Developer

Yea, that's is like the fastest solution if you want to win as consistently. The stronger tactic is first sending a few heroes with decent stats and making far, increasing your gold income. THEN doing exactly as you did (you can dump any stat).

Submitted

Title alone got me, this was hilarious. I didn't end up winning, grinded up to almost 3k gold and died at 99%. But this was clever and a good deal of fun! Great use of the wildcards too!

Developer

The game basically built itself from the wildcards and they made the game better for it :D To win you can send a few heroes without items to make some cash, then make a good hero. That usually works :)

Submitted

Did I die exactly at 100%? :D I kept playing this longer than I initially wanted to. I loved the pixel art characters and the whimsical speech bubble texts. I send a bunch of them into battle without buying anything to maximize my gold. But my super strong character met their match as well.

Developer(+1)

That's a weird bug, the hero probably failed the challenge at the last millisecond possible but the counter kept running for a tiny bit more. Let's imagine your hero dueled an enemy hero at the throne room and failed, shall we :D

Submitted

I was strangled by vines 3 runs in a row while being soothed by the beautiful soundtrack.

Developer(+1)

The soundtrack recording session was a blast, cried from laughing :D
