A fun entry. It did take me a while to feel out how it all worked, but it was fun once I had figured it all out :) managed to get to the end to defeat the giant enemy crab 🦀

One suggestion for improvement would be that I think the game should automatically draw a card at the beginning of your turn, as there's never any reason not to, and I found myself forgetting often. That's a very minor issue though.

Great job dev - we both made games with crab enemies!

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing :) I agree with the automatic card raw idea. And I'm thinking about allowing 3 actions of any type: Like draw 2 cards and move once. Or move twice and then attack.

This is a fun and unique little game. It took me a bit of playing around to realize how everything worked but I picked it up pretty quick. There were times where it seemed like I should be able to move to a certain spot but it wouldn't let me. Ending the turn seemed to fix it, but as others said, it would be cool to maybe see your move and attack range.

Really cool submission, not a lot of card games in the jam so this one stands out for sure!

Developer

If you can't move anymore you probably either have already moved this round or your move speed is zero (which can happen with the tent item card). Hovering over your explorer card will show you your stats. But it could definitely be communicated better. Thanks for taking the time to play :)

I really liked this! I defeated the giant crab and got to the end. I really liked how moving your guy around the board was a key part of the game and that where you moved actually mattered a lot. I wish that you auto drew 1 card from the deck every turn and there was a better indicator of when your turn ended.

This was a really cool deckbuilder, I really enjoyed it! I did terribly though, as I kept being over-confident.

  • (+) I really liked the positives and negatives about the cards, it made it a bit more thoughtful in how I wanted to play cards and in what order.
  • (+) Really cool application of the theme. The audio, though minimalist, fits very well and communicates the expedition theme. Same with the enemies/obstacles
  • (-) I think there could be some better feedback and communication, maybe. I kept missing stuff by missing to hover over something, and sometimes I couldn’t perform actions but I didn’t know why.

Great job!

You did a good job with the Side Effects Includes Wild Card.  It made me think about the order of my cards and whether the benefits were worth it.  One thing I noticed while playing though.   When I started a new game, my base stats were the same as when I ended the last game unless I restarted the page. Which was nice when I won, but problematic when I lost and started a new game with 0 health.

This is a neat concept for a game and I think it could go somewhere. I like the card-ness of it. I think you could make a really unique roguelike/lite out of this if you added a deck building aspect. "Here's your starter deck (i.e. three boots, a machete, and a medikit) and you've got 20 gold to buy the rest of your supplies." Then after each level you buy more gear to tackle the next level.

I also really enjoyed the multi-card boss at the end. I was not expecting that, and it shows out-of-the-box thinking. Good job!

I loved the game idea and card design! I thing both the "Expedition" and "Side Effects Includes" themes are well covered.

One thing I'd explore more is how to add more risk/reward into the actions. For instance, most of the times ending the turn and just keep drawing cards doesn't give the player any penalty. It could be something like: "take the card, but lose one HP" or "every time you skip your turn, an extra enemy appear on the field" - anything that would make the player thing "is this action worth it now?".

Also, each turn the player can do too many things at once. In many tabletop card games you need to pick one (or a few) actions from several possible. Take "Ticket to Ride" for example: you can either draw new cards and risk letting your opponent block your train in the meantime, or you can build a train but eventually run out of cards in the worst possible moment.

Hello ! Good game, love those kind of strategic games. The mecanics of a deck building is always a fun one.
Unfortunately, I was kinda confuse when my attacks doesn't seems to work. For example, I was with a bow that set the range to 3, i could attack the head of the crab at a range of 2 but not it's claw which was at range 1.

But overhaul, I had fun playing your game !

Developer

Thank you for playing. You were playing a ranged weapon that can only attack ranged and not in melee range. So enemies in range 1 won‘t get attacked.  It’s not intuitive, and was maybe a bad idea, when I think about it

Submitted(+1)

Oh I see, thank you for the precision. When you say like this, It makes sens.

It is a good Idea, it gives some variation, but maybe the icon for the range should not go all the way to the 3rd point but from the 2nd to the 3rd so this will be less confusing.

Interesting take on a card battler, I liked it! The art was nice, and it didn’t take too much time to figure out how to play.

What was confusing me at first, was to distinguish the player from the other cards, and that it was possible to drag equipment on top of the player card (yes, there was the tutorial which I didn’t read right away). Maybe if the player/enemy cards were further distinguished somehow..

Good overall game, I personaly don't find the link between expedition and this card game. The game mechanic is pretty good, the card item with draw back is a nice idea for the wild card  Side Effects Includes. Just a question how are we the baddies? A nicer background with terrain would be a nice addition for this entry to better set the mood you intended to make.

Beside those little point, I had fun to kill the big crab at the end and manage to escape the Zone!

Developer (1 edit)

you‘re fully armed guy killing animals on a jungle exploration. Sounds pretty bad to me :D

I had a placeholder AI background during development. But I didn’t get around to drawing a real one

Nice game! Enjoyed it! I wish only a bit longer stay on display of tutorial message.

Took me a second to figure it out, but seemed very cool once I did. Would love to see more levels and maybe a smoother ramp up period. Overall very solid submission though.

thanks for your feedback. It's really valuable <3

I love the way you used the Side Effects mechanic as your card actions - once I got the hang of things I understood what this game was going for. My one criticism is that it's possible to lose purely out of a bad hand - I got to level 3 and died immediately because I couldn't move to the right and a crab was next to me. But otherwise this game has a really solid foundation that could easily be expanded into a much larger game :)

Developer

Thank you for your feedback. I agree, maybe being able to choose any combination of 3 actions would make it less frustrating. You could move twice and draw a card. Or draw 3 cards.

I enjoyed this!  I liked the mechanics and it had depth and interesting decisionmaking while being very quick to pick up.  I found myself wishing there were rewards for defeating enemies, it was satisfying to clear a board but I wanted the game to give me something for it.  Against the giant enemy crab I just stormed straight thru and left the rest of the crab being (messed up!!).  Also I think I found two bugs, there was one in the first round that left me unable to move up into the final gold square, and then also I think the player character's power may persist between runs.

Fun idea to explore more, nice work!

Developer

Thank you so much. This is valuable feedback. The explorer is a bald, white dude on a killing spree in the jungle (We're The Baddies), so I didn't want to incentivize killing even more, so it stays kind of a moral decision. But for a real game, this would be a must. I also planned on having a "Shop" where you could combine duplicate cards into a single, stronger one or sell duplicates for more valuable cards.

I liked the core game mechanic. Giving action points and letting us select the actions is a really nice touch and makes the game quite intuitive.

really fun

Fun game and it feels polished for being made in a week. The only bug I found was that sometimes the item description would stay open and it wouldn't go away even when I changed levels.
