Creative Vision / Rationale / How Did You Incorporate the Theme
We made a game that encourages you to be generous towards wild animals. Your mission is to collect fruit and keep them for yourself. You can spend extra time and go against your supervisor to "tame" wild animals. This does not give you anything in return - it is not an investment - other than a happy ending and a life well spent.

Really charming game! I love the art and the funny commentary, and had a lot of fun going around and feeding all the animals. The aiming system was a little tough to work with, and it felt a little difficult to angle my character in the direction I wanted to through my dough-nana in, but was able to feed all (I think?) the animals in the end!
I also discovered another trade off to feeding the animals - the more friends you make, the easier it becomes for them to pin you against the environment for a bit of time 😂. I never got stuck, but I found that little detail funny (though it may have been unintentional).
Great job overall! I can tell a lot of love and effort went into this game.
Haha, thanks for the comment and yes - its not intended that they want to keep you there :D
Just some game-jam bugfixing and QoL that never happened. We also realized very late in the production that our invisible map border collision and trigger for the "dialogue" also collide with the cursor and this messes up the characters direction then ...
Jeldrik, Balduin, Kurt and Mona -
this is easily one of the more memorable games i have played in this game jam.
one of the biggest highlights: you made this 3D game playable on browser - i love your priorities!
the silly commentary was so comforting - made me feel like someone was always there. loved the sense of humour and personality. 100/100 on intuitiveness.
i loved the use of classic reverse psychology to give us motivation to feed the so-called "monsters". loved how light-hearted everything looked and the subtle emphasis on how they were not dangerous - which would nudge even the more reluctant players. appreciated how they were plenty of doughnanas that you feel like you can afford to feed these cute critters.
coming to these cute critters, i love how they might not fit the definition of conventional cuteness - but how through the attention and care given to animations; they come across as so delightful - the kind of charm, say, Toothless from HTTYD has. i wanted to keep petting them!
also, simple mechanics really fit this context...i won't ask what the ruins are all about, but what on earth is 0451?
sending you much love and doughnanas!
Heyyy, Balduin here - thank you!! That's such a nice and wholesome comment <3
You really appreciated everyone's individual work, that is so nice to see. It is also very reassuring and cool to see, that the "simple" mechanics and quirky dialogue (Mona's idea with the kind of radio messages) were well received. I don't know if Kurt was inspired by Toothless but I definitely agree with you - it's the same spirit and cuteness vibe hehe.
We are all really proud of Animal Time and comments like yours (and everyone else!!) make game-jamming really worthwhile!
Also personal thanks at this point for the environment and dialogue appreciation :D very cool that you even found and mentioned the easter egg - 0451 is the classic reference to System Shock and the Immersive Sim genre as a whole and as a big admirer of these games I have to hide it in my games too - even if we do not have keypads that you unlock with that "secret" code haha.
Again, loved your comment - thank you thank you! Have a wonderful day/night and see you around.
Hello again, Balduin!
Yesss, all of your contributions come together to make a quirky little symphony! Thank you for introducing me to the term 'immersive sim!' I feel like you care a lot about player agency and system design (I do too even though it's so hard to convincingly implement sometimes) ...maybe I'll take a good look at System Shock. And I think simply researching about 0451 will open a tiny door into a big world I'd love to explore...
You too, have a wonderful day or a..good night!
Your game is absolutely charming, the modelling and art in this game is just beautiful. I would love to spend more time in such a vibrant and colourful world. And flying away with all the happy little critters dancing was just the perfect send off!
Thank you :) Glad you liked it!
Dear Jeldrik, Balduin, Kurt, and Mona - I did see your portraits and I had a lovely time gathering and feeding doughnanas!
Who cannot love a nice 3d model doughnut?
!! Nice first time someone mentions the photo haha! Glad you stayed long enough :)
It's has been an incredibly long time since I have done the 3D doughnut ^^ the Doughnanas actually started out as weird flowers and design wise we talked about "collecting apples" until one day I changed it and invented the notorious Doughnana.
The creature designs are very friendly.
The “Dough-nanas” grow back within a few seconds of plucking them. It is unclear if this was intended, especially because picking more than your quota causes the counter to display incorrectly.
Nice - thank you :D
Yeah the timer was adjusted and I think it is now at 10 seconds which is a bit fast indeed.
We actually did never go so far that the counter broke haha - so I guess you got the very rare "double quota" end dialogue (which we really added last minute because we could haha and it is very not special but says something that you were the BEST player right?).
This is such a whimsical game~ I had a lot of fun running around collecting fruits and especially taming the animals. The art style is very charming, especially all the animal designs. All I ask is that if you decide to keep working on this project, we get more critters to befriend in the future. Kudos to your team!
Thank you - this is super nice to read and we are very grateful :) Thank you for playing and your kind words.
Same as Fresh Cooked Games. The modeling, texturing and shader work is wonderful. Great job!
Thank you - really appreciate it :)
Isn't their game a survival? Haven't played it yet.
I ignored directions and continued to admire the landscape. Loved the style.
haha thank you! I hope you still found your path and some
animalsmonsters :)Love the art style of this game! Really fun and quirky experience overall! Good job!
Thank you a lot!
Story - Absolutely quirky in all the best ways! I loved the silly narration that accompanied you throughout the adventure and I REALLY loved making friends with the monsters. They were so delightful and I immediately felt like they were my bestest friends in the whole wide world.
Mechanics - Wicked simple and I think that's what made the game so enjoyable. The lack of having to memorize new controls made it extra easy to just jump in and have fun.
Theme - Oh you bet your butt I was generous with those animals. I wanted them ALL to be my friends.
Audio/Visual - Great music, hilarious sound effects, and amazing models/ground design. Really a feast for the eyes and ears. The music was so catchy I found myself making a little song about how all the animals were my best friends to its beat. Loved it.
Overall - Just a delightful experience all around. It was bittersweet saying farewell to my horde of monster besties at the end, but I remembered the good times we shared and took comfort in a job well done, as I hope your team does with this great game!
Thank you so so much for this heartwarming feedback ! This is what GameDev should be about <33 Definitely screenshotting this and telling the whole team to read and have good feelings. Super glad you had a good animal time :)
You just made my morning !
Love the design and animations of the creatures. I wish there were more of those little ones! Great job!!!
Haha thank you!
Kurt?! Are you reading this - more, the people (and me) want MORE critters!
love the environment and grass shader, the overall art style feels very coherent. the animals are all so cute :D
Thanks a lot mate!
Do you mean the floor texture with grass shader?
reaaaally loved the aesthetic, and the game overall felt great :)). I tamed the little creatures just to be able to see more of their little animations, so cute
Thank you, thank you, props to Kurt for his amazing animations and creativity! That was exactly our plan hehe a life well spent - well a game session well spent but you got the idea :D
Your game is also on my list (Balduin writing) - I played it this morning on a Macbook Air (2023 Silicon) and it ran terribly :( wanted to try on my PC later - I'll write a comment once I did.
I loved seeing all my animal friends as I left in the ship. Even if I didn't meet my doughnana quota.... The game was peaceful, pretty (i love the grass swirls), easy to pickup, and incorporated generosity so well. Awesome job!!!
Oh Thanks for the reply :)
The grass-swirls finally acknowledged haha (it took SO-LONG to place them all haha).
And regarding the quota - don't worry about it. I am sure other will do a double quota anyways (and get the special "good ending dialogue" hehe) - thanks for playing mate!
Nice work! very peaceful gameplay, it was relaxing to just walk around and collect. I did find the camera not being able to rotate was a little frustrating but thats my only negative. Great game!
Thanks for playing and writing a comment :)
Yeah the camera again ^^ I answered someone before and yeah ... Not rotating the camera makes it like 3/4 less work for environment and level design haha - Animal Time 3D really needs to happen rather sooner than later.
Cool little game, I think I got all the animals :D The art direction looks incredible, only wish I was able to rotate the camera around to see more of it.
Hehe nice thank you - I am quite happy we cannot rotate the camera because most of the environments only work one directional right now haha
Maybe we will do an Animal Time 3D in the future ^^
SO QUIRKY! Games like these catch my attention and stand out among the rest for me. Lovely usage of the theme, enjoyed the idea and especially the dialogue. You can totally feel the love behind every detail, made by a wonderful team of humans :) My feedback would be that adding more assets or variations to the different areas could help it feel more "full." Great job!
Thank you very much! That is so nice feedback :)
I agree - the game has some large open areas that feel kinda empty which I would blame on us being slow with the testing and playing of our own game during development ':)
Haha! Dough-nana! It's very fun! Loved all the cutesy corky commentary, character design and levels! I visited all biomes and pet all kinds of critters, and my favourite are crocodiles! Also - why so blurry? There is even a comment about it in the game itself, is this a creative decision? :)
Thanks a lot for playing and commenting - really appreciate that :)
Yeah one of us wanted to have the DOF effect in to make everything a bit more miniture-looking. We settled with the current one as solid hybrid between what was there before (even more blurryness around the edges) and no DOF ^^
Was it a big problem on your end?
Not really, no! I fully completed the game, just was curious about this unique look!
Really fun stuff, the camera movement is well designed!
Thank you!
As with nearly all mechanics the camera and character movement were a highly debated thing ^^
Big shout outs to Mona on making like a dozen variations and to Kurt for the extra work on the strafing animation that is not even included now - GameJamGame haha
I liked how you incorporated the theme - I wasn't feeding the animals to progress through the game, it was just because I felt generous
Thank you! I hope you had fun and a play-session well spent!
We had a lot of back and forth with that idea and now getting the first feedbacks in and seeing that it works makes us smile :)
