Biting the Jam? (My first jam)

Hello all,

I’m Riglus, and like several here, this is my first Game Jam. Not sure if I’ll join a team, but I specialize in programming and am working on my art-skills (needs improvement). I’ve been working on a game in Godot for about 1 1/2 years part time (as I have a full-time job).
Anyway, I wish everyone luck for the jam and am excited to participate myself.

Wow! Looks like your expirenced! Good luck, though!

Good luck to you as well! I’m not fresh to game dev, but I’ve also never done a jam before. I’m mostly interested in seeing if I can actually put something together within the time frame. Plus getting to check out others individuals and teams work too!

Good luck! Just want to tell you that not being great at art does mostly not matter in game jams. You only have 9 days after all. Having 1.5 years of coding experience will help you a lot!

Good luck to you as well! Thats good to hear, at least for me. I’m definitely weaker in the art department. Making small steps towards improvement, but I can definitely code faster than I can draw/design.

Hi! Good to see more newbies out there like myself. I’ve never put anything out (or even really made anything presentable), but I’ve been playing around with Godot and GameMaker for almost a year now. I’ve been hearing from indie dev-tubers all over that game jams are a great way to learn and build confidence, so I decided to finally dive in and do my first jam! I’m nervous, but excited!

I’m not that great with art, but I’ve been doing a lot of drawing and sprite work in my free time to make my own assets as I use them. I want to be able to say that everything I’ve made, I did on my own, you know?

I totally get it, I enjoy the process and whatever is made at least I made it. Heck, before I started hobbyist game dev I couldn’t imagine doing any of this. I still got a ways to go, but I’m getting better little by little.

Likewise my projects have never seen the light of day. But Game Jams seem like a good excuse to learn more, gauge my skills, and build confidence. In the end I’ll at least have fun making it. Plus have something I can show people.

Interesting... one thing I can recommend is to quickly get the syntax of khan acadamy javascript, put it on w3spaces, and pump out 45-minute games. It gives amazing experience, and gives you a reason to keep going; as now you can develop a fanbase

I am a bit of a C# head myself, but I understand what you mean. Make a bunch of shorter games to build experience and a portfolio. Plus the added benefit of coding a variety of basic systems that can be expanded on or reused in the future. I should really start doing that. Honestly I got lost in what was supposed to be a small first project.

Thank you for the recommendation though, I had no idea khan academy had coding courses! I only really used the site for Mathematics in college. But I’ve been meaning to check out Javascript for a while. Similarly,  w3spaces sounds like a good place to apply what I learn.

Yes, but one thing to let you know before, and this may be a bit interesting, is khan academy JS is basically Prosessing java - Java syntax.

It is easy enough to learn, and if you want, I can help you learn it =)
