Had a fun time doing a play through. Figuring out which ones were positive and which were negative was a bit annoying at the beginning and I didn't see them explained anywhere. Great music and sound effects. Gameplay also felt pretty balanced, not too hard, not too easy.
An interesting take on adding the theme to the gameplay! I wish there was more ways to combo as it is a bit hard to plan ahead as the blocks are replaced randomly instead of falling from above.
I'm liking the art and the music a lot. Even though I got a bit frustrated at losing the first game, I still had fun with it!
(I accidentally stacked the opponent's tokens which probably caused my loss, but that's because I didn't read the description of the game.)
UI was pretty smooth, shuffle button came in clutch, and overall it was a good game!
Love the art and animation you gave to this game. Game feels like a well polished product rather than a jam game.
Not sure if the orb spawning in place of matched orbs is a design choice or due to time constraint, but I do feel that it takes away some form of control over the traditional sky drop you'd normally see in match 3 games. Quite a few times I get penalty orbs randomly matched because of spawn ins. I think some form of predictability here will be nice (maybe display like a orb queue thingy to know what is going to spawn next)
Good job on this, thank you for participating!
I was aiming to do the gravity effect like the original Match 3 games, but yeah, I didnt make it in time plus the coding was pretty fragile and I was rushing as I only got myself to pack it up! As well the rngs for the generation of the Opponent and the Hazard Tokens. But I'm glad you enjoyed this unfinished game regardless! A final update to this game is in this way to show the gravity effect, the other 3 endings left and the better gameplay explanation with the tutorial! I really appreciate it! It's my first time I'm releasing my own jam game!
I think my biggest barrier to loving this was just my lack of familiarity with this genre of game. The description listed out a bunch of similar games that I might have played, and I hadn't played any of them!
The theme tie-in was good, and it was present in both the dialog as well as the gameplay itself.
It took me a minute to figure out what I was actually doing clicking around on the gird, but once I figured it out I had fun. Some more UX clues like highlighting selected rows and columns would've helped with that. I also wasn't sure if the different tokens were having active effects other than just clearing combos.
I see! Some other jam games caught me with this impasse! But I could handle 'em and perhaps meet new playstyles! Regardless, tysm for playing and the feedback! As I was in a short time, unfortunately a lot of things couldnt make it, but later this jam, a true finished version is in the way!
O la la! Reminded me of a certain...game 馃槈 and this one was a lot of fun! The music and sfx was spot on, really enhance the game feel for me! The characters are adorable and the UI is clean! a few nit picking point is maybe explaining a bit more about the rival token do would be a nice addition.
Overall, great game! Fantastic work!
Then you kinda can guess which of the chars on THAT game, the red haired girl is based on!馃槅
Glad you enjoyed my first Jam Game! And yea, time wasn't on my side because of my situation, so I didnt added a tutorial sheet, specially for your issue with the Opponent's Tokens!
Btw for some reason, the post was triple posted so I had to manually remove 'em!
I see! Also ah oopsy, that's probably an itch bug thing, sorry for that!
I had fun playing this game. :)
Took me 3 rounds to finally understand how the token moving worked (I was thinking it was just position swapping, not full column/row sliding) and to start actually playing the game with a workable strategy.
I think adding an image showing the "before and after" of a token move would help understand the mechanics better.
I liked the character art, the UI design and the sound design! Nice music.
Since the tokens that fill up the space left by a token group match are seemingly random, my strategy consisted on never matching tokens that were next to 2 contiguous negative tokens (purple one and the rival one) so that there was a zero chance of accidentally matching them and killing my score. If I got to a point where that was the only move, I'd just press the shuffle button and sacrifice the bonus points. It ended up working pretty well on my second play as Flayon, although I only won by 10 points in the end (that was a close game!)
I lost on my first play as Ollie since I basically threw the first 3 rounds as I didn't understand how the game worked. XD
Great game! Especially considering you worked on it for only 48 hours. (plus the 2 additional days from the grace period)
Once again tysm for playing and feedbackin'! It was either rebalancing the tokens and scores, add the music and the girl's new sprites or add the tutorial sheet to add in the grace period (which I learned one day after the submission)! It's a good strategy shuffling the grid (specially for later meet your corresponding tokens and nullifying the opponent's score bonus after a shuffled match or finding more time tokens)!
Fun little game, I'm not the greatest at match games, so I actually really liked the upgrade system - helped make up for my lack of skill, lol.
I'm not sure if this genre is established, and this mechanic comes from it, but the way the tokens will randomly reset, instead of descending like in other match games, makes it a little hard to play around combos, but I think the system of shifting the row/column depending on the movement of the token helps make up for that.
I do like how you're competing against the other member, but I don't think I saw a point display or anything until the end of the game - maybe I missed something, I wasn't paying 100% attention to everything else going on while playing, so having I think having the score show in between rounds, to know how you're doing would be a nice feature.
Other than that, though, I don't think I have much else. Thanks for submitting!
I wanted to implement the gravity, but because of how fragile the code was and I was running out of time and solo developing in a short amount of time, this was my safest option! And yea! Unlike other games where you can drag just one space, actually I like HuniePop's drag system to anywhere vertically or horizontally in the grid, so this is strongly inspired of that factor! Also the points are kinda purposely hidden and to be revealed in the end, again short time, and because they like to suspense the audience! I'm glad you enjoyed the game regardless! That's more than enough for me!
(What was your first run, character and ending btw?)
I picked Flayon, but Ollie smoked me by the end ;-;
Oof, I see! (Perhaps you matched her tokens accidentally? Or suddenly after a match...)
Yeah, I was probably matching some of hers accidentally - I didn't realize they had corresponding tokens until after my first attempt (negative visual comprehension moment)
It's times like these that I should have trusted myself more, If I had more time I would have give the warning in the Tutorial Sheet... Putting in the description wasn't enough so the confusion is understandable!
Such is the curse of game jams, can't catch everything that slips through the cracks!
