This is an interesting concept, most rhythm games focus on trying to hit the correct beat but this game uses both on & off beat system for diffrent situations. Also thumbs up for also creating a proper tutorial to help explain the gameplay mechanics properly.
P.S when you try my game later please use the latest build.

Developer

Thank you! I realized the tutorial was very important, because otherwise it'd be very difficult to explain what "off-beats" are to the player. I think I spent almost half my time building the tutorial and other visual aids to help the player understand the game.

The art and the audio is very great! The mechanic reminded me a little bit game "Crypt of the necrodancer". The tutorial was very helpfull, my score on the hard map was something like 3:28, very cool game!

Developer

Crypt of the Necrodancer was certain an inspiration! I was hoping to build something like it but more focused on navigating the world rather than fighting monsters, and I think I succeeded to some degree :)

Really cute and cool art style and music. I liked the three different sounds and difficulty options. I can totally picture myself speedrunning this game and taking the obstacle path to save time and finish faster 😄

The sound syncs perfectly with the key presses, how did you manage to do it ?

However, I didn’t really feel a difference in difficulty between easy and hard mode. It just felt different, not necessarily easier or harder. Maybe I’m missing something?

it just feels really good to play!

Developer

Thank you for playing!

Re: difficulty options - my idea was that the "harder" songs have faster speed and beat pattern to add extra challenge. You're right the map doesn't get harder. I'd have liked to implement another more challenging map, but didn't have enough time.

For syncing music, this video gives a good method:

So cute and chill! Loved the art and the animations, they perfectly captured the vibe! Excellent song choices too, I really enjoyed my time with the game. It's really cool how rewarding it is to stray off the beaten path!

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😄

I love this.  Having separated obstacles for double time and strings of only obstacles for some syncopation is very elegant and fun to play.  Triplets also introduce a fun change and make the obstacles larger than 1 space extra interesting as well.  The animation is super cute when standing on an obstacle, and it looks like I'm happily skipping along as I'm moving through the world!  The music is well synced--I feel like all of the actions that didn't register were reasonable, and I like the differentiation between "you timed correctly but on the wrong beat to move that direction" (wrong beat) vs "you're bad" (miss) :)

A minor bug in selecting level and song:  the click box for the Lake in level select seems to extend over the "orial" part of "Tutorial" (this shape seems similar for the Tutorial clickbox too, but less of a problem because there's nothing else to click over there).   The song slelection also moves to the next song down before fully leaving the choice above.

Overall, amazing game.  Thoroughly enjoyed!

Developer

Thank you for the thorough review! Seeing that you enjoyed the game makes me very happy! 😃

I’m really glad the music synchronization felt good. That took a lot of time to get right. I kept running having issues where the syncing worked well in Unity Editor but then breaks in the Web build.

The song/map select click target issue is something I noticed as well. I tried briefly to debug it but couldn’t figure out why, so I left it as it didn’t affect the function too much. 😅

feels like playing Zelda, love what you did! 👍👍😁

Developer

Haha Zelda really had some influence! I looked at Cadence of Hyrule for inspiration. Thank you for playing!
