Clever mechanics! I think I crashed the game, when at the “silence” part, I waited until the awkwardness meter got off the chart.

Developer

Haha, yep, that's a clever feature! The game is simply supposed to end at this point. Which, on a web game, corresponds to crashing, because web browsers don't allow interacting outside the scope of the game.

But if you saw it as a bug, it is probably a case of bad game design. When I designed it, I did not expect the web version to just freeze instead of closing, and the only way to avoid this behavior was implementing a game over screen, which I did not have the time to do.

Haha, actually I briefly considered it to be a feature instead of a bug. But hitting ESC didn’t let me get out of fullscreen mode either. So maybe it’s Schroedinger’s feature-bug!

Developer

Oh Jeez, that sounds bad indeed! Sorry for the poor experience!

No problem! I thought that the game was very cleverly done and witty.

This is so clever idea and nice packaged. Once i got a timer added my brain turned into juice.

The short times,  clever script, the one single answer moments...

This felt like having some kind of realtime interaction

Thank you, that means a lot coming from a skilled Game Dev such as you!

I was indeed trying to convey some of my experiences from talking in real life, while also keeping the dialogue engaging and lighthearted.

Alas, I am as poorly skilled in conversation flow as I am in project scope management, and I had to give up on a few essential mechanics that I had planned to design and implement in the first place.

So what remains is mostly the witty dialog, haha. I am glad it passed most of you guys' sniff test. <3

wow....... I've made up with video games. Thank you! Very smart game idea... A bit stressful for an ADHDer I guess... I was amazed when George noticed that I clicked on whatever answer was on the screen without having read it, just by fear of having my awkwardness bar rising up. And he gently corrected me. Think first, choose after... but do both quickly!!! lol.

Thank you, you are too kind!

Credits for that "replying-too-fast" feature idea go to my very dear friend STESSNIQ, a fellow game dev hobbyist with much to teach me!

It is also a stark reminder of how important playtesting can be: just a half hour spent on letting a diverse sample of people put their hands on your horribly disfigured prototype, as soon as it is playable, can result in leaps of improvement with a moderate amount of tweaking.

Incredibly charming and witty. The dialogue had me cracking a smile through the whole thing and George was very friendly and easy to talk to. I only wish all my conversations could take place in a quiet black void with prewritten answers. XD

Developer

I know, right? It takes a lot of the mental strain and guilt away, knowing that you have only that limited set of options to choose from.

Although George is a sweetheart, if I continue working on this, I definitely want to explore having a wider range of consequences to the player's choice of words. Nathan Hoad's amazing Dialogue Manager enables so many possibilities that it would be a shame not to put it to good use!

Thank you for this kind review!

WOW! This was so cool; I really liked the fact that I was starting to get into the grove of double tapping for text and it felt like George could tell I was doing it and mentioned the possibility of cutting someone off... I became a LOT more careful because of that! :) It's so true, conversations are not easy and you really have to respond at the RIGHT time for there to be no awkwardness...

The way the game was being built as I played was also very cool- and lent to be an amazing tutorial! :)

Developer

Thank you so much for that outpouring of praise, and especially for setting all this up! You did a fantastic job and I can't wait for the showcase later today.

Your game jam allowed me to conjure just the right amount of recklessness I needed to finally put this game idea out there, so it means a lot to me that you found some joy playing it. :)

Am off to play the other submissions!
