Creative Vision / Rationale / How Did You Incorporate the Theme
When our team saw the prompt, we very quickly arrived at the concept of cooking and food when prompted with generosity. The theme states that generosity is an inherently human act, and that goes hand in hand with the act of cooking for another person. A good meal made with care by another person can be one of the purest forms of connection.
In our game, the main character Maisy owns a magical restaurant, it's door leads to countless other disconnected doors across the land, and she helps the denizens of the land by cooking them meals that are special to them. A door can pop up anywhere, signified by a fairy ring on the ground, and the visitor will be whisked away to Maisy's restaurant. With the concepts of generosity, connection, worlds.
In our prototype we were only able to implement a small part of this vision, but we think it acts as an enjoyable window into the larger world of our original vision. As our protagonist, players must assist a member of the forest to recreate a recipe they have forgotten. However, our protagonist is unable to do it alone. Players must complete their quest by conversing with characters and defending themselves from more hostile woodland inhabitants. In the world, the hostile inhabitants pose a threat not only to the player, but other characters and the player is able to see the impact of their quest.

Really cute game! The environments look super polished for such a limited development time, the restaurant has so many cozy details and the scrolling backgrounds in the forest look great. The 2D character animations are very charming, though sometimes look a bit out of place against the surroundings which are lit much more dimly in comparison. The platforming was fun, though pressing space to fall down through a platform did not feel very intuitive. There was one instance where I fell and got stuck inside a tree root, but after spamming space bar enough times I was eventually able to jump out of it.
Cooking is what I had the most difficulty with. It felt cumbersome to have to first click an ingredient slot, then click an ingredient tab, then click an ingredient instance, and then press space all to select one ingredient. Ideally, multiple different ingredients would be displayed on a single tab, with each tab representing a broader ingredient category, and the need for pressing space to confirm a selection would be eliminated. Also, it felt much too easy to accidentally assign an ingredient to the incorrect preparation method, which caused me to waste ingredients on experimental dishes instead of the recipe I was trying to make. I think the step of assigning a prep method could be done away with entirely, instead automatically putting the player into the correct prep step for each recipe ingredient like what is done in Cooking Mama.
Last bits of unorganized feedback:
I had fun with this little game overall, and I'm super impressed with everything that you were able to accomplish in such a short timeframe. Great work!
Cute game!! cool idea to make a platformer!! The atmosphere is really pretty :)
Enjoyed the cozy interior. Gathering ingredients gave purpose to the side scrolling combat, which felt good.
How cool! The contrast between the two environments is nicely done, feels all warm being back inside. Food connects all different people & culture, so I really enjoyed what you've done :)
First of all I like the environment a lot! I like how you guys created two different vibes for the house interior and the forest outside. The music also working very well to help create 2 different atmosphere. The cooking process is fun!
hey it's Chris!
Tiny Chef: Potager's atmosphere and visual presentation is amazing, as well as the attention to cooking (I always felt like there's a lack of fun cooking games that are more emotional than Overcooked!). Would you guys consider other ways to gather ingredients than combat? I wasn't able to find the tomato ingredient even after circling the environment 3 times.
God speed and look forward to your future work!
Thanks Chris! We did want to have other ways to collect items than the combat, the functionality wouldn't have taken more than 20 minutes to implement, but to say the final few days of development were packed would be an understatement lol.
For the tomato sauce recipe, you need to talk to Boca on the left side of the map at the campfire. All of the recipes are obtained from the NPCs, but unfortunately again from time constraints we weren't able to add anything like "Got Recipe!" so it can be confusing. It just shows up in your recipes list.
I think I'll update our description with a bit of explanation on how to progress if you get stuck. Thanks for the feedback! And good luck on your games as well!
SO CUTE! Love the wholesome dreamy-ness of the experience and would love to see it expanded into a full game at some point!
Very cool idea and a nicely executed prototype. Would love to see it expanded into the full vision you had for the game :)
it's cute, whimsical, and perfectly captures the experience of me adding rocks to my food, love it!
Dude I love the game! Very easy to understand and cutue graphics. You can say it is a tiny chef's kiss HAHA
