I gave it my best shot, but unfortunately I couldn't make a finished product within the alloted time, so I unfortunately have to bow out. But this was still a worthwhile endeavor, though. Even if I didn't finish my game on time, I still had fun getting as far as I got with it, plus now I have a new project to work on...just because I wasn't able to get this game done in time for a game jam doesn't mean I'm gonna just scrap it and let all my hard work go to waste!
So, what was my game gonna be? It was something I had titled "The Zorpling Zone", featuring a bumbling junior space ranger named Gary Starflop who unexpectedly gets pulled into a mission where he has to defend a mining colony from an endless horde of colorful goblin-looking aliens called Zorplings. To tie in with the theme of the jam, there would've been a short cutscene at the start of the game where Gary gets a mission briefing from his commanding officer, who tells him to "Just get started!" when he tries to weasel out of his duty. The game would've been an endless survival game where you had to survive as long as you could while Zorplings continuously spawned from a bunch of pipes in the battlefield and wandered around the arena, with more powerful types showing up the longer you lasted.
While I wasn't able to fully finish the game, I at least was able to build the level, fully implement Gary Starflop as a playable character (minus his main attack, which would've been to shoot lasers from a laser gun), and at least make the sprites for the other characters that were supposed to appear in the game. I'd say that's pretty good progress all things considered...but I'm not stopping there! I think I had something good going here, and I want to try to turn it into a fully finished project. Who knows? Someday you all might be able to play a bigger, better version of The Zorpling Zone right here! But in the meantime, let me show you guys a little bit of what I was able to do:
