This was a really fun game, the concept was really unique and it was really fun trying out different combinations and seeing what was compatible with what, it took me so long to get out of 12th place :(
Nice look and style !!
What was the big cook ?? I wanted to fight >:D
Really well-made game! Great interface and design
this is a true cooking RPG
A really nice game overall. It's a great idea and well executed.
I really enjoyed the game! Visuals are amazing
I am amazed by how good and fun it is!! The only thing that took me a bit longer to understand is what item order means :D
great work! :D the sound and music are great and i really liked the art!! super fun
Yo this goes hard! The art and music were awesome and the concept felt pretty unique ! Good job!
Thank you! I was especially worried about music, it’s very rare to get something that sounds cool.
The presentation is crazy and the idea is very original. Great job!
The gameplay itself needs a bit more love, since the timer didn't really matter (there's no way to lose, you don't lose points?) and cooking combos were very hard to pull off, so in the end it was "I'll just jam some random stuff there and it will work".
I (very temporarily) got first place! I really like that resource/inventory management games like these are popping up more (eg. Backpack Hero) and I think you pulled off the style perfectly. Well done!
Yeah! I watched streams of Backpack Hero while making the game, and I really wanted to make it so that the positions of the slots mattered, but I couldn’t pull it off. It seemed like there would be too many bugs, and writing abilities that way is much more complicated. 2 games ago I made game where abilities depended on cells, but it was much simpler! I’m also curious, what did you use for the record recipe? Because I balanced it at the very end and never found a super combination! And thank you for the feedback!
I think making positions matter would be a nice addition if you came back to this game post-jam, definitely seems tough to pull off bug-free during just 3 days. I don't remember what recipe I had used last night, but I did just beat my old score with cricket -> pepper -> tomato -> x3 garlic (~40 points), so I'm still in the top 5! I don't think I have a clue on how I'd surpass 100 points, though (like someone else in the jam did).
Bugs: Inventory doesn’t reset between runs. Timer keeps going after finish.
That aside, I LOVE this game! This is incredibly polished to the point of me being skeptical whether you started this project before the game jam even started. The presentation is immaculate. The gameplay is unique and diverse, to the point of there being meaningful strategy (combined with a leaderboard to add the competitive aspect to motivate players). The only downside I’ve noticed is that the limitation isn’t used correctly (makes it all the more sus that you started this project before even knowing the limitation :P), at least that’s how I interpret it. Time isn’t an enemy here, rather the driver of progression.
Incredible work nonetheless :)!
Thank you! I think it is a good sign that there are suspicions. It means that my sleeping 4-5 hours wasn’t for nothing. Overall, it really helped me that I worked in a style that is very simple for me, and I had used similar mechanics in a previous game. I was able to reuse various things like leaderboards, settings, dialogues, descriptions, and many animations from old games. And yes, the ‘limitation’ is done terribly, I agree 100%. Initially, I wanted to leave only the timer and make it is so that food gives a time bonus, then the theme would have fit.
But, I cut all that out. Why? Because such a limitation simply killed the core of item exploration; it is would have been impossible to read if there was a strict time limit. And if I had made a pause during cooking, it is would have been weird again, like there is a timer, but it is not really there. There would have been a problem with endless looting. I agree that limitations should be adhered to, but I just messed up at the beginning of development and didn’t think through the cycle at the start.
Also, I ended up with poor balance. There are things that are hard to find in combination, but they give a MINUS to points, which is just ridiculous. I left it is for the last couple of hours before submission, even though it is should have been done much earlier
Mad props to the sleepless works. I also hope that someday I’ll have enough tooling and reusable stuff of my own to be able to make such a well polished product!
Don’t worry too much about the limitation, unless you really care about ratings, what’s more important is making a game you are proud of, and one that you enjoy.
