Yes - I'm new to game jams!

How does your game fit the theme?
You are an astronaut just getting started exploring a bee infested planet for the first time! Also first game I ever made haha!

It's simple in a good way but I wish everything didn't reset when you died. It's a great start for something bigger and was fun!

simple, but good.
And I was running half a level away from a big elf woman.
funny one

You've got a really nice game. It reminds me a lot of some games I used to play on my NES that I really liked. My only complaint is that it's a bit hard to hit the bees without getting stung. I like the idea of leveling up and the upgrades. Oh, and the Winnie-the-Pooh slugs made me laugh so much!

Developer

Haha! Thanks Gato! Glad you had some fun with it and those Winnie-the-Pooh slugs! 😂

Ok so this is a 2d platformer with the vampire survivor twist on it . Its nice , the lazer VFX is quite funny and feels good . Movement are simple and great , can play around physics for more realism and make the movement more heavy and impactful. Its a great start . Would love you to try mine

Developer

Thank you for playing and for the feedback! Yeah what I was thinking is having different planets you go to, and each would have different gravity so that each planet would be pretty unique in that way, but not sure if I’ll go that route or not just yet. And Certainly, I’ll be able to try out your game later on today and give some feedback! 😄

This is great for your first game. The mechanics and upgrade system is well made (and I'm glad that some upgrades are permanent so its not hard to get back to playing after dying). The only issue I see with the combat is how you can spam the guns so much, and that makes it difficult to utilize alternate ones while fighting. I'm not sure if you plan on extending or changing the game after the jam, but either way this is a great start :)

Developer(+1)

Yes! I definitely plan on expanding the game a bit and fixing some of those pesky bugs haha! Thank you so much for the feedback and loved your precision platformer! I need to learn how to make my wall collisions like yours so that they aren’t so janky haha!

Pretty solid game with cool visuals and level design

A really good first step into making a game like this! The controls, and especially the jump, felt really nice to use! And being able to just mash the gun fire with enter and shift was really satisfying to me personally! A neat leveling up system to allow for a bit of customization and multiple weapons to choose from all made for a neat little package!

Only a few nitpicks from me, like jumping into the side of walls had some weird interactions. Using the mouse to select level ups is a bit odd. The worms looks cute but a touch out of place. And perhaps adjusting the level design to be a bit less backtrack.

But overall a great start! I could see this being expanded upon into something really fun and engaging!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! Yes the jumping is so weird on the side of the walls and something I really wanted to hunt down why that was, so many little fixes to really give it that good ole polish! Thank you for playing and the feedback it's really appreciated! And I love your gif! ❤️

You got a really good game foundation! Nice variety of weapons with different abilities, and also a decent size pool of enemies. The art and sound effects are also pretty nice.

Some feedback:
- A weapon switching animation would be really nice to have. Currently, the character looks the same regardless of which weapon he's using, and having different weapon sprites would let the player know instantly what weapon they have at any given time. Using number keys to select which weapon to equip would also be nice.
- It feels a bit weird having to use the mouse to select an upgrade, due to the game not requiring a mouse for the actual gameplay. There is a grab_focus() command for buttons in Godot which you should try to look into. This should allow the player to be able to use arrow keys to switch between the upgrades, rather than needing the mouse.
- The main thing that the game could use is advanced UI. You got everything you need, such as health bars, hit markers, buttons, text, etc. Using custom designs for them instead of Godot's base designs would really help blending your UI to the world better.

That being said, what you made is really impressive given the time period! With a couple tweaks here and there, your game really has the potential to look very professional. Congratulations on your first game jam!

Developer(+1)

Aw thank you so much for playing! I wish I was better at art like I said on your game haha! It's something I really would like to learn so I can better customize these elements! Give it a little pizzazz! (Man that word looks so weird haha!)

And OMG I did not know about the grab_focus() command! I was wondering many times how to make the buttons selectable with just the keyboard but just ran out of time to research and figure it out! Thank you so very much for letting me know!

And yeah, I wanted to do so much more but just couldn't get enough time to get it all packaged together like I really wanted haha! Thank you lolkira for the awesome feedback and for playing my game! ❤️

Submitted(+1)

That was a very fun game to play and also had a lot of content for a game jam! I especially enjoyed the roguelike elements with the upgrades (at one point I was dealing almost 60 damage per shot haha) and I liked the variety in weapons. I can easily see this game expanding to include more weapons, enemies, and boss fights!

Great work for your first game jam!

Developer

Aw thank you! I honestly felt it was a little too short as I wanted to make a second stage and had some ideas for it, but alas... time, the thing we all need more of haha! But thank you for thinking there was enough to it!  Thank you so very much for the review!

PS: Y'alls game was really awesome! ❤️ I want to learn how to do some of that movement stuff as it was so awesome!

Submitted(+1)

Could be zoomed in more. There is a lot of empty space. The advancement is solid. Could use a diagonal fire. I would play some early Contra to get a feel for how you could improve on your formula and add make it more frentic.

Congratulation on making your first game jam! 🎉
As a fellow newbie, it is honestly a miracle that we got anything done haha
Your game was good, I'm impress that you were able to implement rougelike features in your game, while I was walking around, there was a lot of "jitter" from your character, I know how to fix this since I ran into the same problem, project > project settings > physics > common > physics interpolation (make sure to turn on advance settings if you don't see it) enable this option and say good by to jitters!
l like the premise, reminds me Risk of Rain!
I have a lot more to say but I'll leave it at that for now.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing! And yes... making a game is so hard haha! Having to think about all the different aspects and build them all together, especially in short timeframe for a Jam like this oof.... and then so much troubleshooting and figuring out why something isn't working or how to even implement an idea, it's just so much haha! I'm glad we were able to make something and put it out there, and amazing job with releasing your first game as well!

And I was wondering why it was jittering like that as it didn't seem to while I was testing my game! I knew there was something I was missing! Thank you so much for letting me know as honestly it drove me a little crazy haha! Definitely going to make some changes once the jam is done just so that I can better learn these things better haha!

good first game and really loved the main menu animation like that caught me of guard

Submitted(+1)

I think you're not supposed to keep double jumps and other game after dying, but really fun game.

Submitted(+1)

Great game, I like the rogue-like feel with the leveling system as well as the visuals :D It did feel a little odd, when I lost/retried and I still had all my guns/powers but not the levels, but I think I could see that working. Good job, in general though, I had fun playing through it!

Developer(+1)

Yeah… I just completely forgot to clear out the upgrades when you die haha! I should retain the levels though to make it easier and you could farm levels essentially! More updates to be made haha! But thank you so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

the visuals are pretty nice. the game hoever is a little slow paced for me, i had fun tho.

also if you have the time , go play my game as well, i would love some more feedback

Developer

Certainly! And thanks for playing! I’ll try out your game here soon and give some feedback! =)

Submitted(+1)

Great game! For some reason i went to the left and straight up skipping all of the tutorials lol, and beat the bee boss first before going to the right

Developer

LOL that’s great! Didn’t realize you could get up there without the double jump! Guess my gating tactics needs more…. Gates haha! Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Surprised it's your first game, it's really good! The visuals were consistent and looked nice, the sound effects were perfect, and the music was nice too (did you make it yourself?). Overall, a fun experience!

Developer(+1)

Haha yup! First game ever! Really glad you enjoyed it!

And I WISH I could create music like this lol, but no that came from Spring Spring over on opengameart for the main track. They have a bunch of cool music tracks honestly!

Thanks for playing, and happy gaming!

Really good game, it's really fun to play :) Polish more, and that would be perfect.

Developer

Thanks! I love your game haha! I had an idea similar before the Jam ever began because I thought that maybe the theme would be around shovels somehow lol!  I’m glad you went with this and made it as it’s a blast (literally with all those nukes lol!). Great job and thanks for playing!

The shooting and overall gameplay loop is very satisfying. It’s a well-tested formula of exploring to get power ups to progress and you did it well. That said, jumping was a little awkward, and some inclusions (such as charging) did feel a little haphazard. Overall a pleasant experience and one with much potential. (4)

The art is quite simplistic, but it communicates effectively. It’s clear thought was put into it, but sometimes the enemies and animations could break or be questionable. (2)

The idea of a “short metroidvania” is one that works well. The connection to the jam theme is pretty questionable (which is valid as this jam’s theme was hard to work with) and the overall gameplay loop was pretty simple. That said, combining metroidvania world exploration with vampire survivor type upgrades was quite novel. (3)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the really thoughtful reply!

Yeah the animations do break a bit sadly. It's my first time learning Godot and doing any game development at all so some things I couldn't get just right like i wanted in the time constraints sadly, but always room to improve haha!  And yeah it doesn't quite fit the theme the best, but I enjoyed making the best out of it and learning! Everyone is so creative here! Thanks a lot for playing! =)

Submitted(+1)

As I said on Discord, very fun!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for being my first play tester! And great game as well! Good job!

Thanks :)
