How does your game fit the theme?
My game fits the theme "Just Get Started", because you, the player wants to learn how to draw. You are too nervous at first, but your mentor helps you get started.

Really cool concept! I can't even draw a straight line — I guess I'll just stick to programming.

if you don’t mind, could you take a look at mine as well?

This was a very fun game that I enjoyed playing! It's a unique take on the theme and I like the direction you went in! It was a bit difficult doing it with a mouse, but I like that you added the 70% to give some lenience to drawing. Also very impressed with the actual drawing mechanic and how well it works. Great job!

A really nice game, the music and pencil SFX made it feel like a chill experience but I still stressed over filling up the red bar. Not sure if other people had the same experience but I would usually finish a level before being able to fill in all the lines, maybe I set my line thickness too high?

Developer(+1)

A few people did have the same experience that you mentioned, so you're definitely not alone haha. I made it so you could use a brush that's a bit smaller than what the outline size was, so if you used a brush to match, you would fill up the meter faster. I just wanted to give some leniency to the player as using the same size brush as the outline makes it really easy to draw outside the lines. Thanks for playing!

what a cozy game! really loved it.

This was such a creative and fun idea (also hard xD)

I also likes the theme implementation! I noticed alot of games really just ignored it soo its nice to see ppl actually try to implement it

This was definitely hard, but it also VERY well balanced. Like Id think it was very hard to playtest this and set the difficulty. The game never felt lenient with the 70% thing but that also never gave you the win for free either.

For the visuals, the base stuff looked cool enough, but the resolution and ui scalling was broken i think. The pencil size box was detached from the rest of the ui and more towards the centre.

speaking of pencils, Im really impressed by the drawing mechanic itself, it was really accurate, in like detecting drawing inside/outside the areas.

Tho I would like to say calling it a relaxing game was a lie xD For me this was a souls like.. I JUST CANT DRAW STRAIGHT. But even so, I did manage to beat it.

The building and house lvls felt easier tbh compared to the triangle one. But the circle really did present a challenge. It was hard

The difficulty curve was also surprisingly well designed. Like I dont think if I couldve beaten the house lvl or the circle level before practicing with lines and plain triangles as easily as I did

For suggestions, I would love to have a restart button in game(unless i missed it), instead of needing to draw gibberish till it restarted.

Overall, a really fun game. more work to the ui and visuals would be good. The drawing mechanic was fun, but a small thing i noticed, when you zoom in all the way and use the smallest pencil size and try to draw, the pencil kinda moves in a zig-zag pattern and is really hard to control. Idk how it was implemented but making that smoother would be a good change imo.

Other than that, I really I enjoyed the levels, they were hard but never TOO hard, the difficulty curve was well designed as everythiing we drew was a combination of all we drew before.

You did a great job! :D

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed comment! I really agree with all the points you mentioned.

The 70% thing is more just to make the game playable, rather than make it easy. The main purpose of it was so that you could use a brush that's slightly smaller than the actual outlines and still fill up the pencil meter, cause otherwise it would make it really difficult to not draw outside of the outlines.

I could not dedicate any time on the UI at all 😭 All of it had to be rushed in order to get the game mechanics and other important things done on time. That is why all the buttons are really basic, and none of it looks that cleaned up. I would have definitely dedicated more time to it if was a longer jam.

Maybe relaxing was a bit of a stretch LOL. I considered the game to be a bit more on the chill side, but I guess some drawings might have been a bit much haha. I 100% agree with your statement on the house level. It was the first level I designed, and I used it to test out the mechanics. It got a small buff, but it's still on the easier end of the levels. The squares and the building got nerfs due to the original drawings being a bit too precise.

Really glad you feel that way about the difficulty! I know I made some flaws, but I'm glad that it seems to scale well. I mainly wish I explained the reasoning on why the player was drawing lines and shapes before other things, but I hope some of that at least got portrayed with the level designs. The original method I had for the dialogue would have been messed with if I had a restart button, and I only just now realized that what I had now wouldn't be effected. I have changed the game in the editor so that 'r' resets the canvas, which I will just roll out once rating ends.

The speed gets increased when zooming in for some reason. That's a bug that I knew existed, but couldn't figure out how to fix. I will definitely try to look into it some more once I get the time.

Thank you again for playing and for the detailed feedback! I really appreciate it.

As someone who has just decided to learn digital art this made me smile a lot, I may have cheated and got my tablet out to play :). Really nice way to learn with some chill music!

Developer

Thanks for playing, and best of luck with your art journey!

really calming atmosphere to the game with the pastel colours and the music, good stuff man!

Submitted(+1)

I will need to try this again, maybe with a pencil haha! But it is a really cool idea and I'd love to be able to learn how to draw better! Right now though I just cannot get my mouse to work to even draw the shapes very well haha! Maybe my hands are a little too shaky, but really cool idea and definitely fits the theme super well! Also very chill vibes with the music! Very nice job!

Developer

Yeah, it's much easier to draw with a pencil than it is with a mouse lol. You should definitely try to pick up art if you're interested in it! Glad you enjoyed the game. Thanks for playing!

An art game, how lovely, right up my alley! This is so soothing and sweet, I genuinely felt encouraged. I think by the end of it, I was actually better at drawing with my mouse (not that I plan on drawing with a mouse any time soon, but hey I guess a new skill is a new skill!).  It's a creative and wholesome take on the theme. Really accessible even to non artists. I really appreciated that the drawings have different line widths, giving you an easy one to start with while you get the muscle memory down. My only complaint is that the the text tutorial should be skippable, because one time the game froze and another time I lost, and both times I had to let the tutorial text play out entirely to get back to where I was.

Developer(+1)

I am so sorry about the game freezing 😭 The main reason I didn't add a skip button was because I wanted people to go through the dialogue at least once before skipping it all, but I should've taken crashes into account. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

nice concept of the game love the pause menu slide transition adds polish to the game also the tutorial dialogue in the bottom middle nice job, only concern was the mouse zoom in and out was that intentional?

Developer(+1)

The zoom in and out is intentional, as it's a feature a lot of people use while drawing. However, there is a bug around it where the brush speed is faster when zoomed in, which isn't on purpose.

Submitted(+1)

Novel main mechanic, nice music, and I was surprised by the ability to change brush sizes. Extremely difficult though!

Submitted(+1)

Really cool concept for a game, nice entry! I personally found it kind of stressful but that's probably because I'm not great at art and using a mouse with no mouse pad lol. I think the right person would absolutely love this game. One critique is that I would cut down the opening exposition a bit, it seemed to go on for a little too long. Really innovative take on the theme. Good job!

Developer(+1)

You aren't the only person to call it stressful, haha. Also, reasonable feedback about the dialogue. I think letting the player be able to skip the dialogue sooner might help with that. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Had to whip out the drawing tablet for this one, I still got annihilated by that thin right triangle though 😭😭😭. Fun experience nonetheless!

Developer

LOL. Hopefully the drawing tablet worked fine with the game. I wanted to add proper support with being able to zoom in/out and change brush size on tablet, but unfortunately I didn't have time for it. Glad you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

God dang this game made me realize I have the most shackiest hand in the world haha😂
I had so much fun! I love drawing and this game reminded me that I should REALLY get back into being more creative again, the messaging is amazing! fits the theme very well, overall a solid addition to Shovel Jam ✨

P.S.
(Thanks for playing my game Kira ><)

Developer(+1)

Don't feel too bad about the shaky hands haha. The experience might have been a bit worse due to a bug where the brush speed is faster when zoomed in 💀
Thanks for playing till the end!

Submitted(+1)

Very cool and relaxing! also the difficulty by playing with mouse its... lets say interesting.

Submitted(+1)

My lines were so wobbly lol But it was fun!
