  • The game has a very interesting premise, and I especially enjoyed the level-up mechanic. Movement felt smooth, and the enemy AI provided a good challenge, although my skills weren’t quite enough, and Hamlyn unfortunately met their end. One issue I noticed is that the level-up text sometimes extended beyond the bounds of the text box. Additionally, the absence of background music became noticeable over time, which left the experience feeling a bit flat. Your GDD includes all the essential elements but could benefit from more detail and visual support. Including images or GIFs to demonstrate key mechanics would enhance the clarity of your design intentions. Overall, this is a very enjoyable first entry, and I hope you continue developing the game further.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
yes

I saved Hamlyn! I found I got stuck on invisible blocks through the hallways. Interesting choice to make the enemies red on a red background. But it was a good playable game.

poor hamlin needs some vitamins. Nice game. Simple. Gets the message.

I saved Hamlyn! Haha. The veins (corridors) seemed to get a little wonky there, but I made it through. Great first game and you accomplished quite a bit. Art, Dialogue, Enemy AI, Animations! Keep it up!

Aiming while moving is very tough, and the graphics seems  a bit stretched when playing on web browser.
That aside, nice job making your first every project. The good news is your first project is behind you, and the better knews is you will only make better and better games from here on out.

Some positives: Dialogue was nice, art was indicative enough and controls were intuitive enough for me to know how to interact with your lore NPC. The attack style was interesting, and for a first project you have quite a few mechanics in place

Some areas to improve: Sound is super important to sell anything. Some SFX would help. More distinguishable level graphics would also help indicate that progress is being made. Also some indication on which way you're facing so its easy to know how to attack.

Anyways, feedback aside, keep making games, they'll only get better and the learning you'll do along the way is invaluable. Good job!

Good luck learning GameMaker! I recommend you looking up «GameMaker Studio 2: Complete Platformer Tutorial» playlist by Sara Spalding on YouTube. That was my starting point. Many things from these videos are applicable to top-down games as well.

As for your game, I recommend the following:

1. Collisions. There're lots of invisible walls, which are irritating. Remove them)

2. Hitbox. It's hard to aim when you're not moving.

  • Make the player object turn to the direction you're moving. "image_angle =  direction" for step event must help.
    • Alternatively you can make it face the mouse cursor — "image_angle = point_direction(x,y,mouse_x,mouse_y)".
  • Make your attack hitbox match with player's direction. So the player can always tell, where is he going to hit.
  • Change the player sprite, so it's easier to see the direction.

3. Camera. Don't pin the player to the center of the screen. Tutorial mentioned above must help.

4. Bounds. Don't let the player go out of view either (you disappear if you go up or left in the starting room).

5. "Landmarks". It's hard to tell if you're moving or not, when you're passing through long corridors. Since nothing is moving on the players screen. The easiest fix would be adding some background objects there just for visuals.

Thanks. I used the RPG maker gamemaker tutorial (by gamemaker studios) to learn a lot of the stuff i used in making this. I will look into that playlist though. I appreciate all the feedback I will look into all of that.

Btw idk what game engine youre using, but theres probably an easy fix for the blurry pixel art, so id recommend looking something up for that. also youre able to skip enemies, i was able to win in sub20 seconds doing that lol

Developer

I am using gamemaker studio 2 for my engine. I will look into seeing if I can fix the blurry art. I do also want to redo the art and make it better in the future. I just used gamemakers built in image editor for these. That is really good to know that you can skip enemies and win in 20 seconds. I will have to look into updating the level design. Thanks for the feedback

I got confused and assumed the red circles were blood cells. It would be nice to distinguish the enemies in some way. I would also randomly get stuck in the middle of the path and would need to move up or down a little to continue.

Developer

I did not think about the fact that the red circles would look like red blood cells. I work in a microbiology lab and the enemies were supposed to represent Gram Negative Bacilli (bacteria) but I do see how those would be very easily interpreted as a red blood cell. I will work on making the enemies more distinguishable. I will also look into the getting stuck issue. I had that happen to me once too and I'm not sure what caused it. Thank you for the feedback this is the very first game I have ever made so it is really helpful.
