Yes - I'm new to game jams!

How does your game fit the theme?
You play as an eager individual who wants nothing more than to begin their squire training. They have doubts in their mind on whether they could live up to even be a knight... that's when a little voice tells them to "Just get Started".

Congratulations on your first game jam submission!

Glad you could finish on time.

I enjoyed the game overall, everything was functional, i just have some points of minor convienience, if you would like some feedback.

After the first berry picked up, I dont need further dialogue boxes.

While the dialog boxes were fine - and this may be personal preference - I would like to close/continue the dialogue just by clicking anywhere and not on the arrow at to bottom right corner.

And this is also personal preference, but since there were only 3 abilities in combat, maybe you could have implemented a input via keyboard keys (Q: Attack, W: Branch Stats, E: Berry).

But none of those mentioned points do really impact the ratings I'd like to give you.

Last question, I saw the tile-package used also somewhere else, did you make the characters art yourself?

Keep up the good work!

Hey wonderful feedback Sasuchi!
Yeah the berry was bugging us too but it was like 1 hour before the submission date and my team freaked out . Yeah we got lots of comments both about the dialogue system and the berries lol. I also love your unique idea on the key binds for abilities definitely gonna implement that  once we  edit our game.

Yes the tile package was  from the unity asset store but everything else you see, character art, enemy art, music,  and of course the  infamous rat was made all by hand!

Thank you!

A solid start. The areas are a bit expansive so a lot of time is spent walking doing nothing. The text advanced controls are inconsistent, sometimes I could press space, sometimes I had to click, and sometimes neither did anything until an invisible timeout occurred. I would hid the advance text button when it is in a state where you can't click on it to prevent that sort of frustration. I wouldn't make the special abilities show until you have enough power for them, or otherwise indicate they are locked.

But all in all, a fun little game that could use some refinement.

Thank you for your feedback! this is some really good notes! We'll be sure to include all of this when we  edit the game after the jam has concluded. :P THANKS FOR PLAYING!

Really nice!! Genre-Wise, we actually have quite similar entries! Loved the art and music, the characters were super cute! Dialogue also really well done. Cool fight system, that stuff is really hard to make in a short time (speaking of experience, lol)

Yeah we felt a lot of pressure but we're proud of what we made and we plan on continuing to work on this project and see it through until it's done! Thanks for your comment :P

More of a bard than a squire myself haha...

Woah! This was your first dive into game jams? Really impressive stuff this! The pixel art style is really well made and each character having multiple dialogue portraits is also quite impressive! The writing as quite hilarious as well! I knew after that sticky note joke I was in for a treat. The music, while simple, gets the job done and helps bring together this charming little package!

A bit of feedback. The camera was a bit dizzying to use at times. The directional movement plus the motion blur was a bit much and discouraged me wanting to run.

The dialogue system seemed inconsistent when I was able to push the button to proceed and when I had to click the arrow. (Which itself got a touch monotonous after picking up several consecutive berries.)

The combat itself is a touch repetitive but gets the job done for essentially being the tutorial intro of a full game.

But overall there's a LOT of potential with this one! There's a great art direction and sense of humor that makes me eager to see if this becomes a full project in the future!

Good game and good job!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMMENT! I love comments that have constructive feedback with lots of positive key points like this one.

To answer your question, Yes! it is our first time into game jams. I was tempted to join some before but always felt intimidated by the time... 2 or 3 days is not enough and if it was too long I'd prolly feel pressured by the time and unsatisfied with what I made. I really like how inbound structured this jam for beginners such as my team and myself it took A LOT of the pressure off.

Gonna try our best to fix the Dialogue system as well as the camera! don't really know how I can spruce up combat for a game like this but thanks for your notes! because of comments like these our game will become 100x better

Cool game, love the silly dialogue. One issue I had was that every time I picked up a berry, it tells me, "you picked up a berry." This would have been fine the first time, but it can get a bit annoying later on. Apart from that, nice game! :D

edit: Forgot to say: Soundtrack is really catchy. I really like it.

Developer

Noted! We'll fix that once we polish after the game jam is done. Thanks so much for your feedback! Truth be told we found it kind of annoying too but we also we're soooo stressed out for time,

I checked out this game because I saw that you use the same assets as our game :)) I loved that you could play football using your ball made out of the sticky note that your mom gave you. The pokemon-like fight was interesting as well, I almost died to a bush.

Developer

Hehe yeah thought it would be fun, I checked out your game too! Amazing stuff. Yeah the tilemap we used was actually kinda awesome sauce ngl. Thank you for your comment and thanks for playing our game!

Nice game! Simple and fun, though the big constant camera movements while walking or running around was a little dizzying.

Developer

Yeah we got a lot of comments about the camera, dw we have plans to fix it up after the jam is done! Thanks so much for the feedback!!
