Artistic Statement / Use of Theme
A cute cartoon about Sea Lions living in the ocean and in land.

Development Summary
Our team of two started with a lighthearted idea: a 2D platformer about a sea lion exploring the ocean. As development progressed, it evolved into a more meaningful story about climate change and habitat loss. We were surprised by how much players connected with the sea lion once we added narrative and NPC dialogue, and by how tricky it was to design levels that worked for both underwater and land sections. The hardest cuts were a planned boss fight and additional hazards, which we dropped to focus on polish and stability. Despite overscoping and technical hurdles, we collaborated closely to deliver an emotional, engaging experience we’re proud of.

Release Plan
The project is currently in a playable and polished state, with all core mechanics, narrative, and levels complete, making it ready for release as a small standalone game. We’re proud of how it turned out, but we also see room for future improvements, like adding more levels, a boss fight, and richer animations to further immerse players. While we don’t have immediate plans to continue development, we’re open to expanding it into a larger experience or even creating a sequel if there’s enough interest.

This was definitely a very fun little game to hop in! I did enjoy the ability to spin around as the seal, and I loved the added story at the main menu. Of course there are a few issues with just hitboxes, but that doesn't take away from the rest of the game, just something to look into if you ever decide to continue.

This game has a lot of charm and a very interesting plot line that compliments its gameplay well. The only issues I had while playing was some of the hitboxes and climbing was difficult, and with a little polish these issues will be fixed. If I had to recommend one thing to add, I'd love if the character was animated, which would also help with knowing the size of the player and what action they're currently doing. Still, the game is in a great state right now, keep up the great work!

First and foremost, I will say, I LOVE this cute lil sea lion. The colors of this game are super pleasing to look at, so kudos for that!

Though, I will say some of the environment settings confused me! I understand it's part of the narrative, but some of the choices for environment were more difficult to navigate (e.g. climbing inside of the trees). I had some small issues with collision, particularly in this area where I would have to wiggle the character through some gaps in the trees. I would also love to see some more visuals, like during the opening. Since the narrative is introduced as a story, it would be neat to add some more visuals and make it a storybook or a dusty research notebook to show the lack of engagement with this theme (like the human character talks about near the trees). I think it may also help if the camera is centered, too, so the player is able to look before leaping.

Otherwise, the platforming was fun! One of those games that makes you tell your friends, "just one more time!" Love it.

The theme is really good, it matches the theme of the jam for sure, I really like how it focused on ocean pollution in a unique way.

I like the structure design that's used for the game, I feel aesthetic overall could us something to make it pop more.

The mechanics are really good and how they are used to maneuver around the level.

Overall, nice work!

First, I'd like to start with: this is adorable! I love the cute (sad) little pup and the aesthetics. I didn't encounter any issues with collision, but some of the boxing seems a bit large.  It would be so much work, but I'm imagining how sad and impactful it would be to have the sea lion react to hitting different types of trash differently. I absolutely recognize the time and complexity of spritework that would require, but your lovely project got me thinking about it - so good job!

I felt so sad for the little pup when I read the story, too. I think adding some background helps a lot!

Overall, I think you nailed the theme of the jam! I really love the story and aesthetics; they’re great! The level design is also really well done, and you did an awesome job making the game mechanics fun and interesting to use while navigating the levels. Overall, good job!

The theme is great! I think it matches the theme of the jam very well, as it mainly centers on how ocean pollution affects sea life in a comedic way.

The gameplay is great, with a few notes. The player is very snappy and responsive, however the animations have some bugs. The enemies don't really have a telegraph when they will change directions, so you do have to actually watch them and learn their routes.

Aesthetics are great! Love the sealions and how the player changes in different zones!

Writing is excellent as well! The game has a "Story" button in the main menu that explains the story behind the game, which articulates it very well.

Overall polish is good! Obviously as a game jam game there isn't a whole bunch of polish, but I believe that for a game jam game it has far more polish than it needs!

It was very cool getting to see this game in its early early stages and I am super impressed with how much you guys built upon the initial prototype!

I was also quite impressed with the variety in platforming, I think it is quite easy for platforming to get monotonous so the fact you included things like moving platforms and climbing walls to expand on it really stood out to me. I also like how different each stage was visually though I will admit the jump between them was a touch jarring at times, maybe the inclusion of a little screen/still to introduce the level and environment might be something to consider!

The writing of the game was charming and straightforward and it centered the themes of the jam effectively.

As for the visuals, I think the creatures are all really cute! And the sheer variety is definitely something to be proud of. I do think that levels like the second one fall a bit short considering how detailed others are but given the time frame I understand that the details of a beach are not the top priority.

Overall I think you all did a great job! :}
