  • Congratulations on creating your first game!! This is a great first step into game development. The game felt very polished in a minimalist style (which I appreciated fully: controls felt precise, and hit boxes were intuitive and fair. A few notes on that, I would like to see a little more variety in the move set, like aiming higher/lower or a block. Moving on to the Game Design Document, I felt that there were two areas that were missing. The first was a timeline of steps and when everything needs to be done by, and the second was where the project will go from here. The main reasons for the timeline are to put into perspective how important or dependent certain steps are on others, and what can be skipped to submit on time. On a related note, the future section indicates what you would like to add in the future, after the jam has ended (because you should keep working on your projects) and tells what things can be implemented if you are running ahead of schedule. All in all, a great first project that you should be very proud of!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
Arcade-style fighter meant for 2 players on one windows PC. Use WADF to control P1, and the arrow keys/shift to control P2. Your goal? Hit the opponent.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
"Only One" reminded me of fencing, in how one touch wins a bout.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The sprite on the sword looks like the number 1, with the lower line being the guard. Additionally, there is only one sound effect used, it is pitched to match the action.

Neat idea, will try it out with a friend. Reminds me of some older games.

Cool idea, wish I had a friend to try this with.

this reminds me of a lot small games i used to play when bored with friends :D

but i don't have friends to play with right now D:

When i made player 1 and 2 collide just from walking into eachother, player 2 won every time, it wasn't a tie, felt a bit weird to me.

I wish I had someone around me to test the actual PvP =( But it seems fun for such a simple game.

Some things that bothered me:

  • Left player may accidentally (or not) press Left Shift, which will cause the right player to swing. You should disable Left Shift and leave only the Right Shift.
  • If players don't swing and just walk to each other, Red always wins. Rigged? =)

I debated adding platforms, and I might add some if enough people ask for them. However I didn't want to deal with circle camping / stalling being a thing, and also the fact that the swords ambiently have hitboxes around them makes it actually a disadvantage to be above the opponent.

*Obi-Wan Kenobi disappointment*
