Artistic Statement / Use of Theme
EVERLASTING incorporates the theme of the jam, by telling a story about Earth, that became inhabitable because of a mad scientist ignoring the risks of Geoengineering. As humans we tend to find solutions to problems which work for the most part but from those solutions comes more problems. It creates a sort of snow ball effect that could happen if Geoengineering becomes a main topic of discussions in the coming years. Informed action can be a very powerful and important skill to have, which can apply to the current conversation behind Geoengineering.
Creating a world where it seemed very bleak and a mad scientist that is controlling everything was the idea I had from the beginning. There are some minor tweaks but overall the idea stayed consistent throughout. From my cohort, Portal was mentioned because the story has a similar feel to it as mine. Starting the project, there was no inspirations from Portal, but now I can see the similarities. I've always been interested in creating a game 2D/3D hybrid, so using Unreal Engine 5's Paper2D support was really handy.
Development Summary
From the start to the finish, the main idea of the game and the core mechanics stayed the same. As a solo dev, brainstorming with others really solidified the ideas and the mechanics of the game, so there was only a couple of changes. Cutting out a lot of the game, really was hard, since I wanted to add a lot, but the scope had to be doable in the time I had so making the rooms and mechanics simple was the best choice. I found that creating the level and art was the most fun I had, while creating the code and the mechanics gave me a bit of a headache, but I eventually found out how to do most of it.
Release Plan
For the current state of the game, there is a lot that can definitely be improved. Unfortunately as I am still fairly new to Unreal Engine and the Paper2D system, I wont be continuing this project, but the Idea of the game is something I am going to keep in my pocket. If there was any changes or additions to this project, I would definitely fine tune the movement system, since from the cohort, movement was a main issue. Adding new mechanics such as rooms with their own special puzzles, and making the movement more enjoyable is something that can be looked upon.

This is a unique and relevant take on the theme of Natural and unNatural Disasters. The character dialogue is well-written and does a good job at making the player curious about learning more about geoengineering.
I think this game has a really cool vibe but I would echo the opinion of someone else that being the perspective is kinda funky to play around and makes some of the jump confusing to do. Over all I'd say the game is still interesting and gives a fun take on the main theme especially in comparison to some of the other games
While there are some clever ideas in this game, I think some of the story does suffer from telling and not showing. If you wanted to rewrite this, I would add some sort of backstory or cutscenes as a lot of the gameplay is clicking through text. For an early attempt of a game in Unreal, this is very good. Keep trying out different perspectives and gameplay styles!
This is an interesting take on the theme! I enjoy the idea of a 2D and 3D game mix, but unfortunately I'm not sure how well it works here. The perspective is a little hard to work with, which may have been fixed by giving camera control to the player. As the other commenter said, starting from the beginning is a harsh punishment and if you did ever revisit the project should be at the top of your list to fix. Still, I respect the effort and think you wrote a great story to back the project. Keep up the good work!
Hello Cow Cutter, sorry to hear you won't be continuing this project, but it's nice to hear that you will be holding onto the idea of the game going forward. I know you're fairly new to the Unreal Engine and Paper2D system, but this isn't bad for what you were able to do. I like pixel characters and the rooms are fine. However, I do have to agree about the movement, the jump is still floaty and having to start from the beginning is not fun. Still, you did fine, despite the game's issues. While it saddens that you won't be continuing with this project, you should still revisit this idea in the future.
