Hello, firstly let me say that I took a look at this game and saw that you have a huge collection of games just like it(I originally found these games thanks to the Mexican Revolution game, although I have not played that yet) and I have to say I love the look and feel of these games! Thank you for making them!
Now I have a sort of lame question regarding this game. My question is just, why would the Expat area on the map be for Nationalistic, as was described in the tutorial?

Hi!  Thanks for playing.  I am glad you like the game.  We are likely to release an updated version soon that should have better AI and more interesting gameplay options.

To answer your question, diasporas tend to be quite nationalistic.  This is certainly the case in the US.  Irish American communities overwhelmingly supported Irish nationalists.  America's Italian community backed Italian unification (Garibaldi worked in a candle factory on Staten Island for a while).  The Ukrainians we have worked with over the years are strong backers of Ukraine.

And nationalist often support democracy.  That may not seem obvious today, but it has been true historically.

Oh of course, that makes total sense!
Thank you for the response and the games, good luck to your future endeavors.
