Chopping trees and building was really, really difficult! I felt like I was fighting the game to do it. Some kind of clicking cooldown would have been nice so I wouldn't accidentally build stuff. Otherwise cool game from what I saw :)

Developer(+1)

yep, pretty unbalanced and lacks fun. The only reason the player has to play at the moment is to see something cool happen

Deceptively deep and well thought out, but yeah my only trouble was that the zombies are too strong early on, and building was kind of tough to do without placing the walls facing the wrong way...

I also think the trees' foliage sprite needs to be a different color or more saturated or something; I get you were going for a desaturated / grimy look but the trees kind of blend in with the ground and make it hard to tell what's what sometimes.

Also random idea but I feel like this would be the perfect game for an animal sidekick of some kind . . . it fends off the zombies while you build, etc. I thought that was what the tutorial dogs might be but I guess not, haha.

Anyways cool game, yeah I hope you can replace the menu images with something that fits the game better (maybe a better title too?); best of luck with developing this further!

yeah I didn’t get any play testing in and ran out of time to balances things properly. I hope to fine an artist to help me make games in the future. Also doors should always place the right way as long as they’re placed towards a wall and the direction of walls are random because they are blocks so direction doesn’t matter. But placing down things hard as you don’t know where there going to be place with the lack of a ghost building. If I add an animal side to kick, it would be a dog in a bear trap who you can save. Thank you very much for playing my game and for the feedback.

its a good game! (thanks for helping me get my game working on itch.io)

I wish it was explained more how to get new weapons since base building seems to just break the axe and counteract the rest of your mechanics but otherwise its a very interesting game with a unique artstyle.

Developer

yeah I couldn’t balance it all very well with the time left so anything other than zombies will destroy your base quickly and zombies already destroy it quickly. It’s because the zombies quite literally pushing the wooden blocks to far away from there position which tells them to break and I was increasing the enemies speed so that could catch the player but I forgot how that was going to make them break buildings easily. I never planned for weapons around the map to be the only way you get weapons once again I ran out of time to make stuff for that.

I like this game, reminds me of Darkwood (but you probably know that)

Developer(+1)

It says inspired by darkwood at the bottom yeah. I hope someone ends up playing long enough to find all 3 enemies but sadly I think its missing a few balance changes to make the player want to keep playing

great game! very satisfying and interesting. The way the character controls and the game in general is really weighty which I love, so aiming and dodging actually required a lot of skill and feels realistic. I like the inventory system and wall building a lot, although in my opinion building a wall takes waaaaayy too many boards for how many you can gather per tree. I think it would be more balanced if maybe 2x as many planks came from a log? that would also incentivise carrying around logs to chop later which I think would be cool. Overall I was really pleasantly surprised by a dev I didn't recognise. Keep it up!

I want to agree with big bread about the AI cover though. In most game jams including this one it's a really bad look. better to have no cover or a simple cover than an AI one. It gives the impression of low effort (even thought this game is clearly not!)

Thanks, that wood idea is really helpful as I didn't know how to make carrying things balanced while keeping the inventory system, so I'll most likely add that. By the way There are 3 enemies in the game and I'm not sure how many people are seeing them. how many of the 3 enemy types did you see? I can't change the game until it gets unlocked, but I have made replacements for everything now. I was able to change the front cover on itch, I think it looks nice

I only ended up seeing zombies, But I'll come back to play more once I've played more entries. I'm interested to see the other 2 based on the screenshots. I played for quite a while so unfortunately that might be all the enemies the average player encounters before they rate the game

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

I guess things will get found as the days go on. the other enemies use procedural animation. Though I'm glad the screenshots are working the way I wanted.

Genuinely a pretty intriguing and nicely-put-together game. The concept is super cool and the artstyle (despite being "primitive") works pretty well together due to it being consistent.

My nitpicks: The deeper mechanics aren't visually explained very well. When cycling through build modes, it'd be nice to have a text indicator on what you're about to build, or how much more wood a structure needs. More details are essential in this type of game.

Also, please replace the ai cover as soon as possible. I don't want people to be driven away from a genuinely interesting game because of the cover. An ai generated cover gives off the vibe that you put no effort into it at first glance, whereas this is definitely a game with passion behind it.

Keep up the good work!

thanks, I did struggle to make things more intuitive for the player. I'm going to go spend a while in blender making a cover, a new menu background and a loading screen. Sadly, I can't change the in-game pictures yet, like the menu background and loading screen. Thanks for your input!
