  • This was a lot of fun to play through, the controls felt tight, the enemies were easy to see compared to the background and the floor, except for the spikes, which felt a little cheap sometimes, though that could be a skill issue. The atmosphere felt really energizing as well, with the music and movement driving me to keep moving and push myself further. I also appreciated the rail indicator when it was off screen, so that I didn’t need to go searching for it and waste my time doing that or recalling it. One additional thing I would recommend is adding an explanation IN GAME of controls, or a settings page that deals with that and other things like volume and visuals. Moving on to the Game Design Document, most of what I look for. However, the Development timeline was missing, replaced with a paragraph describing how development was going. The purpose of the Development timeline is to have actually steps and dates to keep you on track and tell you what you can skip if you are behind schedule/ what you can add if you are ahead of schedule. All in all, Great Work.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
BREAKDEATH is a fast paced 2D shooter where the player eliminates all the flesh monstrosities inhabiting the town using only one rail. Swap the rail between your two hands to allow for quick movement using your powerful railgun’s recoil.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
The theme is represented in multiple ways in this game. The main way being, you only have one rail, you need to be careful where you shoot and must retrieve afterwards. You and the enemies also only have one hitpoint, which was also inspired by the theme.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Please pay attention to the atmosphere, and how all the elements of the game come together to give you that feel. Also please pay attention to the player movement, it is very unique and I am quite proud of it.

THAT WAS FANTASTIC! I'm really impressed by the art, the gameplay, and the completeness of this game! After the first half dozen deaths, I was able to pick up on the jumping and attacking mechanics. It was really rewarding to finally take out those monsters. Props to the both of you for your excellent work!

As the artist I can confirm this review is true the art is really good.

I spent many grueling hours drawing for this game, I appreciate the review.

Spikes seem broken. I even tried jumping onto the wall and hanging there for a while. But they trigger and kill me the moment I land somewhere, even if it is not the platform where they initially were.

Reloading was a bit annoying as well. Apart from spikes, I mostly died when I forgot to do it. Just make RMB shoot the rail, not switch it.

Nontheless, I enjoyed the game!

I get that, the spikes are a bit mean. Their biggest problem is that while they have a visible telegraph, you often can't see it when clinging to a wall, so it often seems like they were waiting for you to jump down. As for reloading, I really liked the idea of swapping between it between hands for cool midair combos and such, but I also often forget to do so, I'll consider other options. Thank you so much for playing!
