The echolocation is really cool!
Calm peaceful game liked the ambience of the dripping stone, and it feels very retro/old game by the art style and how the game works. I do wish there was more lighting since it was a bit hard to navigate. Maybe some glowing mushrooms? or crystals? Would have been cool to see maybe a pond included :) Impressive work for only doing this by yourself. Great work on the game jam and I wish you luck on the game jam!
I ate 23 butterflies :butterfly:
This is a really calm game! You nailed the cave atmosphere with narrow paths, lack of light, and dripping sounds. The colors and the pixelated style is eye-pleasing. The echolocation mechanic is kind of cool once you get the hang of it. Very relaxing game overall, as long as you keep your distance from the snakes!
One small complaint - utilizing the
Ctrlkey in the web build might not be the best idea, given how easy it is to press it while simultaneously going forward withWhaha. It’s not a big deal since you can easily raise/lower with mouse instead, but I once closed the game tab accidentally. XDI ate 15 butterflies in total, couldn’t find any more. :-)
like the aesthetics!
its hard to maniobrate but dont that much
Loved the vibes and the look of the main mechanic. Navigation can be a bit rigid sometimes but I think it works well when contextualized as how a bat moves around their environment.
A little hard to navigate without constantly using echolocation, but cool game! I like the echolocation effect and it was fun to explore the cave, good job!
Love that you gave a full-screen option! The echolocation took me a bit to get down, but it made much more sense after that.
The idea is quite interesting. It's hard to navigate at first but trying to do it with the help of echolocation is fascinating
Great concept, but the cave could be a bit bigger. I find it pretty hard to move around; maybe it’s just a skill issue. Also, is the replay button broken? I don’t know how to press it. Anw great game ! :D
On first appearances I was a little confused, but I'm glad I kept on because I think you've executed the ideas really well. Once I got a hold of the controls and the visual-spatial awareness using echolocation, it made much more sense and I started flapping through the cave with bravado, eating butterflies like nobody's business. The echolocation is quite pretty and gives good visual feedback, whilst making the player have to still look around a bit to figure out where food is. The cave feels very angular and cave-like, and was big enough to get a sense of exploration. I liked the use of the vertical layer too, making me need to duck in places or fly over snakes, kind of like aerial platforming. Good work!
For constructive feedback, I think there might be a few too many controls here - I think most of the game could be played if committed to with the keyboard or mouse. Key-wise, I wonder if setting LEFT and RIGHT to rotate the bat could have felt a little bit more natural. Otherwise, once you get the hang of it, it's no big deal at all. With more development time, I wonder what other features or secrets you could set in a big cave like this to encourage the player to have a bit of a wander around?
Thanks for checking out SYMMACHUS and I hope you had a fun time making Bat for the jam!
Thanks for feedback!
Loved the concept, animation, environment.
A bit hard to get around though.
you mean the speed of the bat is too high?
Speed of bat was fine, just understanding the surroundings to traverse felt a little hard for me. Or maybe that is the whole purpose? lol
You supposed to understand the surroundings mainly by scanning it. Well, maybe i haven't tweaked the balance so well. Anyways, thanks for playing!
