Love the drawing
The outline of the character design actually comes from some test characters, whilst the court room was basically just what I thought would look good. The artstyle is meant to look like a good version of a drawing in MS Paint, glad you liked it!
Your honour, the humour was funny, and I like lawyer games, what can I say
That's good to hear! Thank goodness our trusty builder managed to build the court well enough, we could've been out of the running otherwise!
Your Honor. I stand before this court today not just as a player, but as a victim, a victim of premature dialogue skipping.
While engaging with the defendant’s game, which is a truly delightful concoction of imagination and love, I found myself in a constant battle. You see, Your Honor, I read fast. Faster than the dialogue was dripping onto the screen. Naturally, I tried to speed things up. But instead of moving to the next line of text, the game skipped the entire message.
I wasn’t skipping, Your Honor.. I was ROBBED. Important lore? Gone. Emotional moments? Evaporated. Sarcastic quips? Never even got the chance to roll my eyes.
It is my expert opinion that this constitutes not just a UX flaw, but a full-blown interactive injustice.
And yet… let the record also show: this game? A banger. A masterstroke of creativity. I absolutely adored it. If I weren’t testifying right now, I’d be playing it again.. just slower this time, with trembling fear of the skip button.
We're ever so sorry for the court's... shoddy design. Our town desperately needed a court to hold this exact trial, but the 4-day rush turned into a 3-day rush due to the worker (just one person) being occupied in activities beyond their control. We the people who work at this court will get our worker to play through your GMTK submission (although apparently our ever-extant worker was going to either way.)
But, to be real, I've never made a VN or something even vaguely similar, I completely forgot to add a text speed option! I was thinking about it, but by the time I would've been able to, it was real late. I've actually had this problem before in a prior game jam, and boy I tried to crank that speed but man it wasn't enough! This is definitely a game I'll come back to, but in a bit, it was a mess of a development.
Thanks for your detailed and lore-accurate feedback!
The best comment I have seen so far xDDD
I liked the twist on the ace attorney style. Although I did get stuck at one point where it brought up a blank text box and wouldn't let me progress. But aside from that it's neat and I liked the humour.
It probably would've been more like phoenix wright if my initial plan had gone through, but this was actually better for the theme! This game is also a bit buggy, sorry for that (I actually haven't heard of that bug!) I also probably should've put notifications telling you when you unlock story pieces and cards, but it was a bit late for that. Thanks for the review!
I love Phoenix Wright like games. I did miss some music and OBJECTIONSSS that would give it more juice. Well done!
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I definitely should've put in some music/SFX/more goofy stuff. I technically had the time but it was 1am at the time. I might expand upon this more later. More comedy in this situation = more better, and something like an OBJECTION! would've gone really well!
Loved the game btw. Had fun.
It's an interesting implemented twist to Phoenix Wright + time traveling. Would love to have the text scroll faster though as it may take a while (or at least you can click to show the whole text box like they do in VNs). But other than that, I think with enough time, it can be a good unique selling point for a detective game!
That's good, thanks! I'd have to heavily re-format the code (it's a miserable codebase, needs some work) but I think I'll work on this idea further in the future. I wanted to make it a little bit less VN-ey, but time restraints happened, so maybe I'll return to that idea later as well.
I also really should've put in that textbox skip, but somehow it didn't cross my mind, whoops!
Also, I hope your game gets more reviews, the idea is so cool!
Really nice concept of time traveling love it!
Thanks! That idea developed about 2 days into the jam, when I realized my overambitious idea was, shocker, overambitious!
Yeah i can relate to that with other projects i wanted to create but just where too big, maybe you wanna rate my entry too, would be really happy!
I was planning on it, will do now!
Thanks a lot!
really nice idea , ui may be needs little work, but as a fan of deckbuilder i liked it
The UI definitely needs work, I agree! I wanted better textboxes and UI that gave more information (as well as just nicer-looking UI, sometimes it just looks like generic basic Unity UI), but time = short in game jam of course.
This is a really cool concept; any game that's a twist on the Ace Attorney style is good in my eyes. With some sound design + more polish the game could be really good.
Yeah, the lack of sound was mainly because I ran out of time, wished I could've added some, it definitely needs it. I'd also need to heartily fix the code - the more I coded, the more scuffed the codebase got. I'll probably come back to this because I really like the idea (I had the core concept of court card game a week before the jam, and the main jam stuff came around when I was making it!)
Great game, really liked the humor.
I thought making the story essentially a parody of generic fantasyland would be goofy, glad to see the humour landed!
Very creative concept for an Ace Attorney like game. I loved the dialog and the humor. My only suggestion would be to add icons to the different cards. The game was fun and creative thank you for making it.
I should've named it "Generic McHero: Useless Attorney!" I hoped that people would find the concept interesting (because admittedly the game is very rough around the edges). I had the idea of "Enemy sues hero in generic fantasy land" and ran with it, which resulted in the story. Thanks for the comment!
I really like the concept and an whats here is pretty fun! A artstyle is nice as well, although simple. A couple times when playing I got this vertical meter timing minigame that stops the text when I press space? I'm not sure if theres something I'm missing but it unfortunately halted my progress. I refreshed and it didn't happen again though so I was able to play through normally. Nice job on a stand-out idea!
Thanks! The idea was ever larger initially (I had ideas for several more opponents, including one guy who was going to sue for defamation and would deny everything until you cracked the story, wish I could've done that!) But turns out 4 days isn't exactly a lot of time (shocker!) Oh, and there's one card that's meant to have a timed minigame, but I clearly didn't fully check through that card in the end, and it's probably broken should've tested it more. Thanks for letting me know!
So cute! Love the dry humour. I like your usage of the theme, too :)
Thanks! I had decided before the game jam even started that the characters would be parodies of generic characters, I just thought it was kinda funny. The theme would've been even stronger as I would've added a mechanic where you could mentally break the opponent, sending them into a spiral (Or, a loop, perhaps) but It was a bit too late for that.
I love a good courtroom scene! Remind me of the Ace Attorney games. I may have found a game breaking bug where the space bar wouldn't work for anything...but other than that super fun! Great job!
Oh, that's a classic bug. I'm pretty sure it happens when you click off the window, but I had that kinda problem over and over because of the weird way I coded it all. Oh, and just for fun, the name of the hero (if it's not a player) is Generic McHero, satire is a wonderful thing.
Love the twist on the ace attorney type game. Instead of gathering info then trialing, you gather them while playing only to dish em right back at him!
Thanks! That was part of my initial inspiration, and it definitely became stronger the further the game went on.
Honestly the time travel mechanic wasn't something that I thought of until a day in... Let's just say there was more planned, but it didn't pan out at all. Happy that the idea that came next really lined up with the theme and my time limitations!
